Research suggests cats may respond to a person’s slow blink and may be more likely to approach afterward. But a blink is not a guaranteed translation of “I love you,” or permission to pick your cat up. If your cat looks calm, you can blink gently back, then let them choose whether to come closer or move away.
What a cat’s slow blink may mean
A slow blink is a sequence of eye narrowing followed by partial or brief closure—not just any squint. When it happens during a calm interaction, it may be a positive social signal. The evidence supports that cautious interpretation, not a single fixed meaning for every cat or situation.
In a 2020 study published in Scientific Reports, researchers tested cats in two settings: owners slow-blinked at their own cats, and unfamiliar experimenters slow-blinked before an approach test. Cats showed more half-blinks and eye narrowing after their owners’ slow-blink signals than in a no-interaction condition. In the experimenter test, cats were more likely to approach after a slow-blink interaction than after a neutral expression. The authors concluded that slow-blink sequences may function as positive emotional communication. Read the study in Scientific Reports.
A separate 2020 study examined 18 adult shelter cats. Of 24 cats filmed, six were excluded from the final analysis. Cats that responded to human slow blinking with more and longer eye closures were rehomed faster. That finding is an association in a small sample; it does not show that blinking caused adoption. The authors also noted that slow blinking may occur in affiliative and submissive contexts, another reason not to treat it as a universal emotional translation. Read the shelter-cat study in Animals.

Should you slow blink back?
Yes, if your cat appears relaxed and is looking toward you. A soft blink is a low-pressure response, but your cat does not have to return it. Professor Karen McComb, the lead researcher on the Scientific Reports study, suggested narrowing your eyes as in a relaxed smile and briefly closing them. Her suggestion describes a way to invite interaction, not a promise that every cat will answer.
- Soften your gaze rather than staring directly at your cat.
- Slowly narrow your eyes, then briefly close them.
- Pause. Let your cat decide whether to blink, approach, remain where they are, or disengage.
Do not chase a response or use a slow blink as a reason to pick your cat up or touch them. If your cat approaches, you can offer a hand to sniff; pet them only if they welcome it. Quiet speech may also be appropriate. If they seem ready to play, you can offer a wand toy, but no toy is needed to communicate with a slow blink.

Is it a social slow blink or an eye problem?
Context matters. A slow, repeated narrowing of both eyes during an otherwise calm interaction is consistent with social slow blinking. Persistent squinting, holding an eye shut, excessive tearing, unusual discharge, redness or swelling, or sensitivity to light can indicate discomfort or an eye problem instead. Do not interpret painful or persistent eye closure as a social signal.
