If your dog pulls, barks, lunges, or gets frantic on walks, create more distance from whatever is exciting them and reward calm, useful choices. Start training in quiet places where your dog can focus, make difficult encounters easier to avoid for now, and get veterinary or qualified behavior help if the situation is severe or unsafe.
Why does my dog pull, bark, or lunge on walks?
The behavior alone does not tell you why it is happening. A dog may pull because moving forward brings them closer to an appealing smell, person, or dog. Barking or lunging may be an effort to get closer—or to make something move away. “Reactivity” describes a response pattern; it is not a diagnosis, and a short description is not enough to identify fear, frustration, or aggression.

Notice what happened just before the behavior, what your dog did, and what followed. Also note the settings and distances where your dog finds it easier or harder to focus. These observations can help you choose safer walks and give a veterinarian or behavior professional useful context.
What should I do when a trigger appears?
Make space early rather than waiting for your dog to bark or pull hard. Cross the street, turn around, take a quieter route, or move behind a parked car or another safe visual barrier. Keep hold of the leash and do not force a greeting. If your dog cannot respond to you or disengage, increase distance instead of asking for a cue right beside the trigger.

For now, consider walking at quieter times or temporarily reducing walks that repeatedly become overwhelming. Enrichment and play at home can help meet your dog’s needs while you work on the problem. Management is not failure: it reduces opportunities to rehearse the unwanted response and can help your dog feel safer while training proceeds. How do I teach loose-leash walking?
Begin indoors or in a quiet yard with small, appealing treats. Practice only a few steps at first, rewarding your dog for staying near you, paying attention, and moving with a loose leash. Gradually build up the distance and distractions as your dog succeeds.

- Start somewhere quiet. Choose a place where your dog can notice you and take treats.
- Reward slack and attention. Give a treat when your dog is near you with a loose leash or checks in with you.
- Respond calmly when the leash tightens. Pause or move away from the interesting thing. When the leash slackens, reward and continue.
- Make the next attempt easier if needed. If your dog cannot disengage from a distraction, increase distance or return to a quieter place.
Walks may not meet every dog’s physical exercise needs. Provide appropriate exercise, social opportunities, and mental stimulation in ways that suit your dog rather than assuming a longer or busier walk will solve the problem. (VCA Animal Hospitals, “Teaching Your Dog Not to Pull”)

Find a distance where your dog can notice the other dog but still eat, respond, or turn away. Pair the sight of the trigger with a reward, and reinforce a simple alternative such as looking back at you or moving away with you. Keep sessions at a level your dog can manage; if focus disappears, create more distance.

AVSAB describes desensitization and counter-conditioning as effective approaches, but progress is not instant and a close or frightening encounter can cause a setback. Avoid trying to make your dog endure close exposure. Do not yank the leash or punish barking: AVSAB recommends reward-based methods for training and behavior problems. What if my dog gets overexcited before or during a walk?
Build a calm, predictable routine and practice attention or a simple “let’s go” cue in a quiet place before relying on it around distractions. Reward moments when your dog pauses, checks in, or walks on a loose leash. Keep early practice short enough for your dog to succeed, and use play or enrichment outside the walk to meet needs rather than treating a longer, busier walk as the only solution.

Can equipment help with pulling?
A front-clip no-pull harness may make it easier to manage a dog that pulls hard, but it does not teach loose-leash skills or guarantee that pulling will stop. Choose a comfortable fit and introduce the harness positively, pairing it with treats. Treats are useful for practice; a treat pouch is an optional convenience, not a requirement. When should I contact a veterinarian or behavior professional?
Contact your veterinarian if the behavior is new, severe, escalating, or difficult to manage safely. Ask whether medical factors or veterinary behavior support should be considered. Serious concerns such as aggression, anxiety, and fear can require an individualized plan involving management and behavior modification, and sometimes medication.
