If your dog may be overheating, move them into shade or a comfortably cool place, start cooling them with cool—not icy—water and airflow, and contact or head to a veterinary hospital immediately. Heatstroke is an emergency; do not wait to see whether home cooling is enough.
What to do right now
- Get your dog out of the heat. Move them into shade, an air-conditioned room, or another comfortably cool place.
- Start cooling with cool water and airflow. Wet your dog with cool water and use a fan or air conditioning if available. Cornell advises wetting the dog and placing them in front of the car’s air conditioning while traveling to veterinary care. A fan can help if it is immediately available, but it is not a substitute for care.
- Call a veterinary hospital and go promptly. Tell the clinic what happened and what signs you see. If possible, have someone else call while you prepare to leave. Keep cooling measures going during transport without delaying departure.
Do not use ice packs or rubbing alcohol. Avoid cold-water immersion as a default first-aid measure. Veterinary guidance differs on wet towels: the AVMA’s 2025 Pet First Aid brochure describes gently placing room-temperature wet towels around the neck, armpits, and groin and replacing them every few minutes; VCA cautions that covering a dog with wet cloths can impede heat loss. If you use the AVMA towel method, keep towels refreshed and do not leave a wet covering in place. Cool water and airflow, together with prompt veterinary care, are the priorities.

How to recognize dangerous overheating
Early warning signs can include heavy or excessive panting, drooling, seeking shade, whining, reluctance to play, or restlessness. Signs such as difficulty breathing, gums or tongue with an abnormal color, weakness, confusion or disorientation, vomiting, diarrhea (including bloody diarrhea), seizures, or collapse are especially urgent. If symptoms are progressing—or your dog is weak, confused, struggling to breathe, having seizures, or collapsing—seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

A dog that seems better after cooling may still have internal injury. Veterinary treatment may involve further cooling, IV fluids, oxygen, and monitoring.

Why a thermometer should not delay care
Cornell lists a normal dog temperature range of 100.5–102.5°F and heatstroke at 105°F or higher. These are clinical reference values, not a reason to delay cooling or a veterinary call while trying to take a temperature. Do not attempt invasive temperature measurement on a distressed dog before arranging care. At the hospital, veterinary staff can monitor temperature and manage cooling; VCA describes stopping active cooling when the dog recovers or reaches 103°F (39.4°C).
Which dogs and situations are at higher risk?
Any dog can overheat. Risk is higher for short-muzzled breeds, older or overweight dogs, dogs with thick or dark coats, and dogs with heart or breathing disorders. Hot or humid weather, strenuous exercise, insufficient shade or water, and hot cars all increase concern. Never leave a dog unattended in a car.

How to reduce the risk
- Avoid strenuous activity during hot weather and the hottest part of the day.
- Provide shade and frequent access to water.
- Watch closely for panting, drooling, restlessness, or reluctance to continue activity; stop and move your dog to a cooler place if these appear.
- Keep your dog out of unattended cars, even when you expect to be away only briefly.
