Note when the refusal began, what the dog has eaten since, and whether drinking, energy, stools, and behavior are normal. A single skipped serving in an otherwise well dog is different from a broad appetite change, pain when eating, or refusal accompanied by illness signs.
Do not assume fussiness until medical causes have been considered. Dental pain, gastrointestinal problems, and other conditions can make eating uncomfortable. If your dog appears painful, is unwell, or has not eaten for more than 12 hours, contact a veterinarian or urgent-care clinic; a diabetic dog refusing even one meal needs prompt veterinary advice.

Start with a quick appetite and health check
Royal Canin wet food may be the issue, but the first question is broader: would your Labrador eat another appropriate food, or is the appetite reduced for everything? This distinction helps you decide whether to troubleshoot acceptance at home or seek medical assessment.

Record what changed
- Write down the date and approximate time the refusal started.
- Record every food, treat, chew, table scrap, or snack offered and whether any was eaten.
- Note water intake, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, drooling, bad breath, lethargy, restlessness, or changes in behavior.
- Watch the mouth and eating motion. Dropping food, chewing on one side, pawing at the mouth, or backing away after trying to eat can indicate pain.
- Check whether the food is a new product, a new flavor or texture, or part of a veterinarian-prescribed diet.
Give the veterinary team this timeline rather than reporting only that the dog is “picky.” The timing and associated signs can be more useful than the brand name when deciding what to examine first.

Separate a food preference from a general loss of appetite
If your Labrador refuses this wet food but eagerly eats a familiar, nutritionally suitable option, acceptance or texture may be involved. If the dog refuses several foods, eats much less than usual, or shows pain or other symptoms, treat it as an appetite problem rather than a preference problem. A dog that seems hungry but cannot comfortably chew or swallow also needs an examination.

Urgent-care thresholds
VCA urgent-care guidance lists not eating for more than 12 hours as a reason to visit urgent care. It also identifies a diabetic animal refusing even one meal as an urgent-care situation. These are practical thresholds, not permission to wait: seek help sooner if your Labrador looks seriously ill, weak, painful, dehydrated, or rapidly deteriorates.
Call promptly for pain or accompanying symptoms
Contact a clinic promptly when food refusal is accompanied by apparent mouth pain, repeated vomiting, diarrhea, marked lethargy, abdominal discomfort, breathing difficulty, collapse, or another worrying change. The same applies when your dog repeatedly approaches food, tries to eat, and then stops as though eating hurts. Do not keep changing foods to mask a symptom.

Prescribed diets need veterinary direction
If the Royal Canin food was prescribed for a diagnosed condition, ask the prescribing clinic before substituting another formula, adding toppers, or preparing homemade food. Therapeutic diets are selected for a specific medical purpose; a food that appears similar on the label may not meet that purpose. The available veterinary guidance does not establish a particular replacement formula for Labradors.
If this is a new food, transition gradually
A sudden switch can reduce acceptance and may upset the gastrointestinal tract. Royal Canin Academy describes a usual seven-day transition. Mix the foods by proportion rather than offering a full bowl of the new food and hoping the dog adapts.
| Days | Current food | New Royal Canin wet food | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 75% | 25% | Interest in the meal, stool quality, vomiting, and appetite |
| 3–4 | 50% | 50% | Whether the dog continues eating comfortably |
| 5–6 | 25% | 75% | Any gastrointestinal upset or renewed refusal |
| 7 onward | 0% | 100% | Maintain only if the dog is eating and remains well |
The seven-day schedule is a usual starting point, not a rigid deadline. Royal Canin Academy advises adjusting the pace for appetite and underlying health conditions. VCA notes that dogs with a fussy eating history or previous gastrointestinal upset may need a slower change. In a weight-reduction context, VCA describes keeping each step for two to three days and, for some picky dogs or dogs with prior gastrointestinal problems, extending the process to about three weeks. That longer schedule is context-specific, so have your veterinarian set the pace for your Labrador rather than applying it automatically.

Check the portion before changing the recipe
Measure the daily amount and compare it with the feeding direction supplied for that food and your veterinarian’s plan. A portion that is too large can look unappealing, particularly when treats are also being given. Conversely, reducing food without professional guidance can underfeed a growing, active, elderly, or medically managed dog. Divide the daily amount into the number of meals your veterinarian recommends and keep a written tally.
Audit treats and extras
List training treats, dental chews, scraps, pill pockets, and food used in enrichment toys. A dog that fills up between meals may decline the bowl without having a true appetite disorder. Pause unnecessary extras while you observe eating, but do not withhold prescribed medication or make a therapeutic-diet change without veterinary instructions.

Use predictable meal times
Offer meals at consistent times in a quiet location. Present the measured portion, allow a reasonable eating period based on your veterinarian’s advice, and remove the bowl rather than repeatedly coaxing or chasing the dog with food. Predictability makes it easier to see how much was eaten and prevents a cycle in which refusal is rewarded with a succession of richer alternatives.
Consider texture and serving format
Some dogs accept one texture more readily than another. A Labrador may respond differently to a pâté, loaf, or chunked wet formulation, but the sources do not establish which format any individual dog will prefer. Ask your veterinarian whether a different texture within an appropriate, nutritionally complete diet is suitable. Avoid adding ingredients on your own when the food is therapeutic or when your dog has a medical diagnosis.
How to evaluate an alternative food with your veterinarian
If your veterinarian agrees that a different food is appropriate, compare the options on four practical axes instead of choosing by advertising or flavor alone.

| Comparison point | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Life stage | Is it labeled for your Labrador’s age and physiological stage? | Energy and nutrient needs differ among puppies, adults, seniors, pregnancy, and other life stages. |
| Nutritional adequacy | Is it complete and balanced for the intended stage, and does it fit the veterinary plan? | A food that is merely palatable may not provide an adequate long-term diet. |
| Calories and portion | How many calories are supplied at the portion your dog would receive? | Different moisture and calorie densities can make an apparently similar serving substantially different. |
| Texture and format | Which texture can your dog eat comfortably? | Acceptance is relevant, but texture cannot override a medical restriction. |
| Diagnosed conditions | Is the food compatible with allergies, gastrointestinal disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or another diagnosis? | A substitute can undermine treatment if it is not approved by the prescribing clinician. |
No available source establishes that one particular Royal Canin formula, or any named substitute, is best for this Labrador. The safe choice depends on the reason the food was selected, your dog’s examination, and the complete diet plan.
Common mistakes that can make refusal worse
- Calling the dog fussy too soon: dental pain and gastrointestinal disease can look like selective eating.
- Making several changes at once: switching food, adding toppers, changing meal times, and increasing treats makes it difficult to identify the cause and can provoke stomach upset.
- Forcing food: forcing a meal can increase aversion and is unsafe when swallowing or abdominal pain is possible.
- Replacing a prescribed diet casually: a supermarket alternative or homemade recipe may not meet the medical objective.
- Waiting through deterioration: use the 12-hour urgent-care threshold as a minimum guide, not a target, and act sooner for serious symptoms.
- Assuming wet food is automatically easier: canned texture may help some dogs, but it does not diagnose or treat the reason for appetite loss.
A simple monitoring plan after the first refusal
- Offer the veterinarian-approved food at the next scheduled meal in a calm setting, with no unrecorded treats beforehand.
- Measure and record what is offered and what is actually eaten; do not estimate from an overfilled bowl.
- Observe chewing, swallowing, drinking, energy, stool, and any vomiting or diarrhea.
- If the dog eats normally and remains well, continue the approved routine and discuss any desired food change before starting it.
- If the dog refuses again, eats substantially less, develops pain, or shows another symptom, contact the clinic rather than cycling through foods.
- Seek urgent care when the dog has gone more than 12 hours without eating, or immediately for a diabetic dog that refuses one meal or for any dog that appears seriously unwell.
What to tell the veterinary team
Bring the food package or a clear photograph of its label, the exact product and texture, the date the refusal began, the transition proportions used, the daily portion, and a treat list. Report whether the food was prescribed, whether another food was accepted, and every associated sign you observed. This information helps the clinician distinguish a formulation preference from pain, illness, an unsuitable portion, or a transition problem.
Your Labrador’s next step is therefore conditional: investigate health first; slow or stop a diet transition if appetite worsens; adjust routine, portions, treats, or texture only after the dog is confirmed healthy; and let the veterinarian approve any replacement when a medical diet is involved.
