What to Do If Your Newly Adopted Pet Hides, Won’t Eat, or Seems Anxious

A quiet retreat and predictable routine can help a new pet adjust, but appetite loss—especially in cats—or signs of illness call for veterinary advice.

A newly adopted pet may hide or eat less while adjusting to an unfamiliar home, but those signs can also accompany illness. Give them a quiet, secure place and time to settle; don’t force interaction. If your cat isn’t eating, contact a veterinarian promptly. For any pet, seek urgent veterinary guidance if they seem severely ill, are worsening quickly, have trouble breathing, collapse, or may have swallowed a toxin.

What to do right now

  1. Set up a quiet starting space. Offer water, the food they are used to, familiar bedding, and an accessible place to retreat. Keep noise and visitors to a minimum. A cardboard box can be a simple hideaway for a cat. AAHA and Cats Protection recommend giving pets a safe retreat as they adjust.
  2. Let the pet choose when to come out. Avoid pulling them from a hiding place or repeatedly reaching inside it. Hiding can be a response to stress, but in cats it can also be a sign of illness, so consider the whole picture rather than assuming a cause. Cats Protection
  3. Keep the environment predictable and secure. Maintain the dog’s familiar routine where possible, and secure doors, windows, and other potential escape routes. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine cautions that crate use is not right for every dog, including some dogs with confinement distress or separation anxiety.
  4. Write down what you observe. Note food and water intake, urination and stool, energy, vomiting or diarrhea, breathing, and whether you can safely locate the pet. These observations can help you explain the situation when you contact the adoption organization or veterinarian.
  5. Ask the shelter or rescue for transition details. Find out what food the pet was eating and request available medical records. The Pennsylvania SPCA recommends bringing adoption medical records to an early wellness visit and arranging an examination within the first few weeks.

When appetite loss needs veterinary attention

Cats: don’t wait several days

Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat is not eating. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says appetite loss can seriously affect a mature cat’s health in as little as 24 hours and advises immediate consultation when signs of anorexia appear. For kittens younger than six weeks, Cornell warns that going without food for 12 hours can pose a lethal threat. These are cat-specific warnings, not a universal time threshold for every species. Cornell Feline Health Center

As Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, lecturer in clinical sciences at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, puts it: “A cat that is not eating deserves to have a full veterinary workup—a thorough physical exam followed by any lab work and imaging that’s indicated by the exam.” Cornell Feline Health Center

Dogs and other pets

The sources cited here do not establish a single safe waiting period for appetite loss in dogs or other species. Contact a veterinarian if reduced eating persists, comes with other concerning signs, or leaves you unsure what to do; do not apply the cat-specific 24-hour guidance as a rule for another animal. If the pet is rapidly worsening, has trouble breathing, collapses, appears severely ill, or may have ingested a toxin, seek urgent veterinary guidance rather than relying on home settling-in measures.

Is your pet adjusting, or could something else be wrong?

Hiding or seeming anxious alone does not establish a diagnosis. A calm retreat and predictable routine are sensible first steps, but appetite loss, other signs of illness, or persistent difficulty settling warrant professional advice. Cats Protection notes that increased hiding can reflect stress or anxiety, but may also signal illness. Cats Protection

For a dog that is not settling or is showing unwanted behavior, AAHA recommends help from a veterinarian and a certified canine behavior consultant. Do not start medication or supplements on your own: the ASPCA says behavioral medication is not routinely recommended for every shelter animal, and decisions should be individualized with a veterinarian. How to use the 3-3-3 rule without delaying care

AAHA describes the 3-3-3 rule as a loose expectation-setting framework for the first 3 days, 3 weeks, and 3 months after adoption. It is not a guaranteed timetable for every pet, nor a reason to wait through appetite loss or signs of illness. Use it to allow time for adjustment while responding to health concerns as they arise.
