Cockatoos chew to maintain their beaks, but loose roof nails, exposed timber and food that attracts birds can make homes and outdoor furniture targets. Start by identifying what may be drawing birds to the spot, then repair or shield the vulnerable surface, monitor what changes, and check local wildlife rules before trying active deterrents or control. The specific legal guidance and management options below are Victorian; requirements differ elsewhere in Australia.
Why do cockatoos cause damage?
Chewing is normal cockatoo behaviour. The Conservation Regulator, State Government of Victoria, explains that cockatoos chew items in their environment, including artificial structures, to maintain their beaks at the correct length and condition. The agency’s wildlife management methods guide, published 22 May 2024, and a 2003 Victorian Landcare Note both describe this behaviour. It explains why chewing occurs generally; it cannot tell you why a particular bird chose your roof or chair.
Loose roof nails can attract attention
The Victorian guide identifies loose roof nails as an attraction for cockatoos and recommends replacing them with roofing screws, which remain firm. This addresses that particular feature; it is not a guarantee against all roof damage.
Feeding may draw birds to timber and furniture
The guide connects damage to timber fittings and outdoor furniture with feeding that attracts cockatoos to an area. If people are feeding birds near the affected spot, stopping that practice may remove one attractant. It is not established that feeding is involved at every property. Surf Coast Shire also advises against feeding cockatoos non-native food in its cockatoo guidance.

How to protect roofs, furniture and fixtures
1. Check and repair roof fasteners
If you find loose roof nails, arrange an assessment and replace them with suitable roofing screws. The right fastener and installation depend on the roof material and construction. Use a qualified roofer where access or the work itself is unsafe or outside your experience.
2. Stop feeding near vulnerable areas
Check whether household members, neighbours or visitors are feeding cockatoos nearby. If so, ask them to stop rather than adding food as a deterrent or trying to redirect the birds with non-native food.

3. Cover exposed timber
The Victorian guide lists metal sheathing, chicken wire, netting and shade cloth as ways to protect timber surfaces, furniture or wooden frames. A retractable shade cloth can be rolled away when people are home. Choose a material and attachment suited to the surface, and secure it so birds or other animals cannot become entangled.
4. Change perching on fixtures
For a fixture that birds use as a perch, the guide describes rolling sections of polyethylene pipe. It specifies sections 5 cm long; fitted to the fixture, the pipe rolls under a bird’s feet and makes balancing difficult. The pipe must be the only available perch on that fixture and must prevent birds from perching elsewhere on the fitting. This is a fixture-specific approach, not a cover for furniture.

5. Monitor and adapt
Check whether damage declines after a change and watch for birds shifting to another part of the building or furniture. The Victorian guide notes that cockatoos are intelligent and methods may need adjustment. It describes using unpredictable combinations of scaring methods, but noise can disturb neighbours, especially in built-up areas. There is no universally established best product or comparative trial result for residential roofs and furniture, so treat these as options rather than a ranked solution.

Consider whether the target is a roof fastener, timber surface or perch: each calls for a different intervention. Fixed sheathing or mesh and retractable shade cloth differ in permanence and convenience. Roof construction, weather exposure, access and safe attachment all affect what is suitable; the cited sources do not rank products for every property.

Check wildlife rules before active control
In Victoria, sulphur-crested cockatoos, long-billed corellas and galahs are native wildlife protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action says it is illegal to wilfully disturb or destroy protected wildlife without approval in its corellas and cockatoos guidance. The Victorian management guide describes an Authority to Control Wildlife process and says non-lethal options should be tried where available before applying for lethal control.
These legal details are specific to Victoria. If you live elsewhere in Australia, check the rules for your state or territory before using active deterrents or attempting to control or disturb wildlife.
