If your pet is missing after an earthquake, protect yourself first, then search nearby hiding places and contact local animal services right away. Do not enter a damaged building, cross debris or downed wires, or go into an area responders have restricted. Once it is safe, search calmly, notify shelters and veterinary facilities, share a clear lost-pet notice, and check your pet’s identification records. No single search method guarantees recovery, so use local direct contacts and broader public outreach together.
1. Make sure it is safe to search
Aftershocks, unstable structures, debris, fires, and damaged utilities can make a familiar route dangerous. Follow local emergency officials’ instructions and stay out of damaged buildings and restricted response areas. Do not cross downed wires or unstable debris to reach a pet. If you think your animal is in a hazardous location, report the location to responders or local animal services and ask what to do; do not put yourself or others at risk by attempting a rescue.

Search only from safe, accessible areas. Local access rules and animal-rescue arrangements depend on the incident and jurisdiction, so follow current directions from local emergency management and animal services rather than assuming a national organization or response team is operating nearby. American Humane Society describes disaster deployments that include earthquakes, while ASPCA describes sheltering, care, and reunification work with local agencies; neither page establishes that those organizations are active at every earthquake. American Humane Society disaster response and ASPCA disaster response provide examples of that work.

2. Search nearby hiding places first
Many frightened pets stay relatively close during the first hours, according to American Humane Society. Search your home and yard, then expand through the immediate neighborhood. A scared animal may hide silently or become trapped in a place it would normally pass by. A careful nearby search is a useful first step, not a reason to assume the pet could not have moved farther away.
Check likely hiding or trapping spots
- Under porches, decks, and steps
- Inside garages, sheds, and other accessible enclosed spaces
- Beneath parked vehicles, without reaching into unsafe or obstructed areas
- Behind dense landscaping, fences, and outdoor equipment
- Inside your home, including closets, cupboards, and spaces where a frightened animal might wedge itself
Ask neighbors to check garages, sheds, fenced yards, and other enclosed spaces where a pet could be trapped. Search places only when you can do so safely and with the owner’s permission. If an area is blocked by debris or otherwise unsafe, do not enter it to look more closely; share its location with local responders or animal services.
Call calmly and bring familiar items
Take familiar treats, a toy, or bedding. Speak in a calm, steady voice instead of shouting; a frightened animal may hide more deeply when startled. At night, use a flashlight to inspect safe hiding places. Keep the search deliberate: check a place thoroughly, note where you have looked, and then move to the next nearby area rather than repeatedly rushing through the same spots. American Humane Society recommends this close, calm search approach in its lost-pet guidance.
3. Contact shelters, animal control, and veterinary facilities
Call local animal shelters, animal control agencies, veterinary offices, and emergency animal hospitals as soon as possible. These are the key local places to ask if a found or injured animal has been brought in. Give each the pet’s name, a recent photo, a physical description, the last-seen location and time, and your reliable contact details. Include distinctive markings and any visible collar or tag details that may help staff recognize the animal.
Ask how to report a missing animal, how to check new intakes, and whether the facility has a current lost-and-found process. Find out how to provide your photo and contact information and how the facility wants you to follow up. Keep checking with local agencies because sheltering and intake arrangements can change during an incident. A facility that had no information on the first call may have new information later.

Where possible, visit shelters in person as well as calling. A pet’s appearance may change after an earthquake, and a phone description may not be enough for someone to recognize it. Bring or show a clear photo and a written description. Follow the shelter’s instructions for visits, and do not assume that a single call or visit completes the search.
Ask neighbors to check their own enclosed spaces, including garages, sheds, and fenced yards, where an animal could be trapped. This complements, rather than replaces, calls to animal services. Keep local agency contact details and instructions together so you can follow up consistently if response arrangements change.
4. Share a notice people can act on
Post and print a concise notice with a recent, clear photo and enough detail to distinguish your pet. Include:
- Pet’s name and species
- Breed or physical description, color, size, and distinctive marks
- Last-seen location and approximate time
- A reliable phone number or other contact method
Share it in neighborhood groups and local lost-pet pages, and put up legible flyers where posting is permitted. Update online posts if you receive a sighting or any important new information. American Humane Society also names Petfinder as a national search resource that may extend a lost-pet search.
Make the information easy to act on: a person who sees the notice should be able to tell whether the animal may match and how to contact you. A photo and description help people recognize the pet, but they do not identify the owner on their own. Public outreach works best alongside direct calls to shelters, animal control, and veterinary facilities, which can check for animals already found or admitted.

When someone reports a possible sighting, ask for the exact location, time, and direction the animal was moving. Share the information with local animal services if the sighting is in a hazardous or restricted area. Do not ask a volunteer or neighbor to enter an unsafe location to verify it. Update your posts if the information changes so people responding to an older notice can see the latest details.
5. Check the collar and microchip records
Check whether your pet’s collar or other visible identification is still on and readable. A collar tag can give a finder contact details immediately, but it can be lost or carry outdated information. ASPCA recommends keeping visible identification current. ASPCA’s disaster-preparedness guidance covers tags and microchips.
If your pet has a microchip, contact the registry or recovery service promptly and verify that the phone number and address on the account are current. A microchip is implanted identification, not GPS: it does not transmit a live location. A shelter or veterinary clinic can scan the chip and use its number to contact the registered recovery service. FDA explains the scanning and recovery-service process in its pet disaster guidance.
Think of a collar tag, a registered chip, and a current photo as complementary tools, not substitutes. A visible tag can show contact details to a finder without special equipment, but may be missing or out of date. A chip is implanted identification that a shelter or clinic can scan, but it relies on accurate registry details and does not show where the pet is. A photo and description help others recognize the animal in notices and shelter checks, but do not provide owner contact information by themselves. Checking all available records promptly helps close those gaps.
American Humane Society reports, attributing the comparison to the American Veterinary Medical Association, that “microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners compared to dogs without microchips.” That is a comparison, not a promise of recovery or a probability for an individual missing dog. The same American Humane Society page says studies suggest microchipped cats are also more likely to be reunited, but gives no numerical figure for cats. American Humane Society’s lost-pet guidance provides those claims.

6. Keep coordinating as the response changes
Disaster response can involve animal search and rescue, emergency sheltering, veterinary care, and reunification. Check local animal-service and emergency-management updates, and follow their directions about where to report sightings or look for animals that have been found. National response pages describe capabilities and examples, not confirmed deployment in a particular earthquake.
Use both local direct contacts and broader public outreach. Shelters, animal control, veterinary offices, and emergency animal hospitals can tell you about local intake and reporting procedures. Neighborhood groups, local lost-pet pages, flyers, and a national resource such as Petfinder can help reach people who may have seen the animal. Neither route replaces the other; continue checking local agencies while keeping public notices current.
Keep a simple record of the agencies you contacted, the time of each call, and any instructions or sightings. Record the contact details you were given and what you were asked to do next. This helps you follow up consistently as local arrangements change without losing track of promising leads. Do not treat one unanswered call or an early “not found” response as confirmation that the pet has not been located.

A current photo and written description make it easier for shelters, veterinary staff, neighbors, and online readers to recognize a pet. Keep the photo, microchip number and registry details, and identification information together so they are ready to share. CDC’s pet disaster preparedness kit guidance, dated April 9, 2024, recommends keeping current photos, descriptions, records, and chip information. ASPCA’s disaster-preparedness article was published September 1, 2026.

Having these details accessible is useful before an emergency as well as during a search. ASPCA’s preparedness guidance recommends current tags and registered microchips, while CDC’s kit guidance also includes identification gear, a carrier, and supplies. These are preparation measures, not a way to locate an already missing animal, but they can make identification and care easier if you are separated. Check the registry information periodically so a finder or clinic can reach you using current details.

If you are assembling a basic search kit, a flashlight is a practical option for checking safe hiding places after dark, as recommended by American Humane Society. It is simply a light source; it does not detect or track a pet. A current engraved tag is another useful preventive identification measure, but cannot locate an animal that is already missing. Keep the focus during an active search on safe searching, current local instructions, clear notices, and follow-up with agencies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I look first for a pet missing after an earthquake?
Once it is safe, start at home and in the yard, then check nearby hiding and trapping places such as under porches, in accessible garages or sheds, beneath parked vehicles, and behind dense landscaping. Many frightened pets stay relatively close during the first hours. Ask neighbors to check enclosed spaces, and do not enter unsafe areas.
Who should I call if my dog or cat is missing?
Contact local animal shelters, animal control, veterinary offices, and emergency animal hospitals. Give each a recent photo, description, last-seen location and time, and reliable contact details. Ask how to report a missing pet and how to check for new intakes; visit shelters in person where possible.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCan a microchip help me find my pet?
It can help identify and reunite a pet, but it is not GPS and cannot show a live location. Contact the registry or recovery service to confirm your details are current. A shelter or veterinary clinic can scan the chip and use its number to reach the registered service.
Should I enter a damaged building or restricted area to search?
No. Follow local emergency instructions and stay out of damaged structures, unstable debris, downed-wire areas, and responder-controlled zones. If your pet may be there, report the location to local responders or animal services and ask for instructions.
Are flyers and online posts enough to find a missing pet?
They can extend the search and prompt sightings, but use them alongside direct contact with local shelters, animal control, veterinary offices, and emergency animal hospitals. Include a current photo, identifying details, last-seen location and time, and a reliable way to reach you; update notices when information changes.
The Bottom Line
Protect yourself and follow local emergency instructions. When it is safe, search nearby hiding places calmly, contact shelters and veterinary facilities, share a clear notice, and verify your pet’s collar and microchip records. Keep checking local updates and report hazardous-area sightings to responders rather than entering restricted or unsafe places.
