What to Do When a Newly Adopted Dog Is Scared, Hiding, or Won’t Eat

A quiet retreat, predictable routine, and genuine choice can ease a newly adopted dog’s fear. Hiding and refusing food may reflect stress, but illness is also possible, so monitor closely and contact a veterinarian early.

Give a newly adopted dog safety, choice, and a predictable routine rather than forced attention. Set up a quiet retreat, let the dog approach at its own pace, and keep people, handling, and outings simple. Hiding, trembling, panting, avoiding eye contact, and refusing food can happen during a stressful move, but they can also signal illness or difficulty eating. Because those causes overlap, contact a veterinarian early instead of assuming the dog is merely settling in.

Start with safety, quiet, and choice

A shelter, foster home, transport trip, and unfamiliar house can be a lot of change at once. For the first days, reduce demands. Choose one calm area where the dog can retreat without being followed. A crate with the door secured open, a corner behind a baby gate, or a quiet room can work if the dog can enter and leave freely. The retreat is a refuge, not a place to confine the dog as punishment.

VCA describes hiding and avoiding food as possible early-adjustment behaviors and recommends simple routines and a quiet place. Its “3-3-3” framework is a guide for thinking about adjustment, not a fixed timetable that every dog follows. Some dogs show curiosity quickly; others need much longer, and a dog may move forward and backward as new experiences occur. See VCA’s adjustment guidance for that qualification.

Set up the retreat before asking for interaction

  • Put water, a comfortable resting surface, and access to the dog’s food within easy reach, while keeping the area away from busy foot traffic.
  • Tell everyone in the home that the dog is not to be cornered, pulled out, hugged, or disturbed while resting.
  • Keep the first routine repetitive: similar meal times, quiet toilet trips, and the same sleeping area.
  • Limit visitors, handling, loud play, and unnecessary car trips until you understand the dog’s signals.

Sit several feet away, turn your body slightly sideways, and do something quiet. Looking directly at a frightened dog, leaning over it, or reaching into its hiding place can increase pressure. If the dog comes closer, let it decide whether contact continues; pause often rather than assuming that proximity means it wants petting.

Recognize fear and respond to the signal

Fear can be easy to miss when a dog is silent. VCA lists hiding, avoidance, cowering, looking away, a tucked tail, trembling, and panting among possible fear or stress signs. Appetite or gastrointestinal changes can accompany stress as well. These behaviors tell you to lower the intensity of the situation, not to persuade the dog harder.

What you see What it may mean Immediate response
Hiding, cowering, or turning away The dog is seeking distance from a person, animal, sound, or location. Stop advancing, remove the trigger if possible, and leave the retreat available.
Tucked tail, trembling, or panting when nothing is physically demanding The dog may be frightened or highly stressed. Make the environment quieter and avoid adding another request or visitor.
Backing away from a hand, leash, bowl, or approaching animal The item or approach has become part of the trigger. Increase distance and allow the dog to choose whether to investigate later.
Unable to take food when a person or dog is nearby Fear is currently stronger than the food’s appeal. Do not force the dog to eat in that situation.

These signs do not identify a single cause. A fearful posture can reflect a new environment, a previous frightening experience, pain, or another medical problem. Treat the behavior as information and arrange veterinary advice when it is frequent, intense, or not easing with reduced pressure.

What to do when your newly adopted dog won’t eat

First distinguish appetite loss from difficulty eating

VCA’s Anorexia in Dogs states: “The first, most important step is to determine whether the dog has true or pseudo-anorexia.” In practical terms, note whether the dog shows no interest in food at all, or seems interested but cannot comfortably pick up, chew, swallow, or keep food down. Mouth pain, swallowing problems, nausea, and other physical causes require veterinary assessment; behavior alone cannot sort them out.

It arrives as a vacuum packed bed in a box, so pat it or let it inflate for about 24 hours before your dog use it!

A move can create stress-related appetite loss, but reduced intake and lethargy also have medical causes. VCA’s discussion of decreased appetite emphasizes that a new home may be a non-medical stressor while illness remains possible. There is no single safe waiting period that applies to every dog, so contact a veterinarian early and explain the dog’s age, history if known, what it has eaten or drunk, and any other change you have observed.

Offer food without turning it into a confrontation

  1. Place the usual food in a calm location near, but not inside, the retreat if the dog can comfortably reach it.
  2. Give the dog privacy. Stand back, leave the room briefly, or use a barrier so people and other animals are not watching the bowl.
  3. Remove the bowl after a reasonable mealtime and offer it again at the next planned opportunity rather than repeatedly carrying it to a hiding dog.
  4. Keep a written note of what was offered, approximately how much was eaten, drinking, urination, stools, vomiting, energy, and any signs of pain.
  5. Share that record with the veterinarian, especially if the dog is eating less, becoming listless, or appears unable to eat.

Do not push food into the mouth, chase the dog with a bowl, or use a person or another animal as a reason to make the dog eat. VCA’s fear guidance is explicit: “If your dog is too frightened to accept food when a person or dog is near, then do not force her to eat.” Moving the trigger farther away and restoring privacy is safer than testing the dog repeatedly.

Build a low-pressure first-days routine

Predictability helps you see whether the dog is gradually coping. Keep toilet trips short and quiet, use the same exit route when practical, and avoid crowded places while the dog is still hiding or trembling. Do not interpret one brave moment as proof that the dog is ready for visitors, busy walks, or unrestricted access to the home.

Use a simple daily pattern

  • Rest: Protect uninterrupted sleep and allow the dog to retreat without being called out.
  • Care: Offer water, meals, toilet opportunities, and prescribed medication in the same calm way each time.
  • Observation: Record triggers and recovery rather than testing tolerance for its own sake.
  • Choice: Let the dog decide whether to approach, sniff, play, or return to safety.

Progress is not a race through a preset schedule. A dog that begins eating but still hides may be improving in one area and struggling in another. Keep the routine steady and judge changes over repeated observations, while still involving a veterinarian when appetite or stress concerns persist.

Manage people, children, and other animals

Ask household members to ignore the dog unless it initiates contact. They can sit quietly, avoid direct staring, and toss a treat away from themselves only if the dog is comfortable taking it; a dog that will not eat is not ready for that exercise. Never block the retreat to obtain a greeting.

Children need explicit rules: no hugging, climbing, chasing, hand-feeding, or reaching into the dog’s bed or crate. An adult should manage every interaction while the dog is fearful. If the dog hides when another dog or cat is present, use doors, gates, or separate rooms so it can rest without being approached. Do not rely on forced “introductions” to make the animals get used to one another.

Repeatedly asking a stressed dog to engage can increase stress. VCA recommends reducing triggers, providing a safe place, and seeking veterinary assessment when stress is frequent. If a person or animal is the trigger, create distance before attempting any training; the retreat must remain available throughout.

Help confidence grow below the fear threshold

Once basic care is stable, behavior work should be gradual. VCA’s introduction to desensitization and counterconditioning explains that exposure must be controlled and that sessions should stop when fear or arousal appears. The goal is not to make the dog endure a frightening situation. It is to keep the trigger mild enough that the dog can remain relaxed and choose whether to notice it.

A practical progression

  1. Identify one trigger, such as a visitor standing in the doorway, and begin at the distance or intensity where the dog can still stay settled.
  2. Keep the exposure brief. Pair calm observation with something the dog values only if it willingly accepts it.
  3. End the session before fear appears and let the dog return to its retreat.
  4. Repeat on separate occasions. Change only one factor at a time, such as distance, movement, sound, or duration.
  5. If the dog hides, trembles, pants, stops taking food, or becomes more aroused, increase distance or stop; do not push through.

Progress can be measured by quicker recovery, choosing to remain in the room, or voluntarily approaching—not by forcing a greeting. If you cannot keep the dog below its fear threshold, pause home experiments and ask your veterinarian for qualified behavior support.

When veterinary and behavior help is needed

Contact a veterinarian early for a newly adopted dog with a marked appetite change, suspected difficulty eating, lethargy, or stress that is intense or recurring. The clinician can look for physical causes, review the dog’s medical and adoption history, and decide whether additional examination or testing is appropriate. Do not diagnose “adjustment” from hiding or food refusal alone.

Veterinary assessment is also the starting point when fear prevents ordinary care, when the dog cannot recover after triggers are removed, or when the household cannot safely manage interactions. A veterinarian may recommend a qualified reward-based trainer or a veterinary behaviorist. Ask what credentials and experience the professional has with fear, rather than choosing someone who promises to force rapid obedience or “break” the behavior.

Keep notes and, when safe, short videos recorded from a distance. They can show the context, trigger, duration, and recovery pattern without repeatedly provoking the dog. Stop recording if the dog becomes more distressed.

Common mistakes that make settling harder

  • Dragging a dog from its hiding place: This removes its only coping option and can make the retreat feel unsafe.
  • Flooding the home with visitors: Several new people can keep the dog above its fear threshold; introduce people one quiet person at a time only when the dog can remain settled.
  • Using food to lure the dog into a frightening situation: If the dog will not take food, increase distance instead of escalating the lure.
  • Changing foods and locations repeatedly: Constant changes make intake harder to interpret and can add stimulation during an already confusing transition.
  • Waiting for a fixed number of days before calling the veterinarian: Dogs differ, and appetite loss may have medical causes; seek advice based on the individual dog’s signs.
  • Continuing an exposure after fear appears: Stop, restore distance, and try a simpler step later or obtain professional guidance.

A concise decision checklist

  1. Is the dog able to retreat without being followed or cornered?
  2. Can everyone in the home follow the same quiet routine and handling rules?
  3. Is the dog refusing food, unable to eat, or showing another change that warrants an early veterinary call?
  4. Which specific trigger precedes hiding, trembling, panting, or avoidance?
  5. Can you reduce that trigger enough for the dog to remain below its fear threshold?
  6. If not, have you asked the veterinarian about a qualified behavior referral?

The safest first response is deliberately uneventful: protect a retreat, remove pressure, offer care predictably, and observe. Give the dog choices, but do not let the wish for a quick adjustment delay veterinary attention when eating or behavior changes are concerning.
