Get your cat out without putting yourself in danger, check breathing and responsiveness immediately, then contact an emergency veterinarian. A cat that appears fine after a fall can still develop inhalation-related lung problems, hypothermia, shock, or complications from pool chemicals. Dry and warm a breathing cat while arranging prompt veterinary assessment; if the cat is unresponsive or not breathing, begin basic life support if you can do so safely and head to the nearest open veterinary clinic.
1. Remove the cat while protecting yourself
Do not jump into unsafe water or lean so far over the pool that you could fall in. A panicked cat may scratch or bite, and a rescue attempt that injures you can leave both of you without help. From a stable position, use a long-handled pool skimmer or net to guide the cat toward steps or another safe exit. Keep your face and hands away from a frightened, conscious cat when a tool can do the reaching.

- Call another person to bring towels, open a gate, and contact a veterinary clinic.
- Turn off equipment or clear obstacles only if you can do it without entering dangerous water.
- Once the cat is within reach, support the body and move it to a dry, level surface.
A skimmer is an emergency reach tool, not a substitute for a secure pool barrier or supervision. If the cat cannot be reached safely, call emergency services or local animal rescue rather than taking a greater personal risk.

| What you observe | What to do now |
|---|---|
| Breathing normally and responsive | Dry and warm the cat, keep movement minimal, and call a veterinarian for immediate instructions and evaluation. |
| Breathing but struggling, weak, confused, or collapsing | Treat it as an emergency. Leave for the nearest open clinic while someone calls ahead. |
| Unresponsive or not breathing normally | Call an emergency clinic, begin bystander basic life support if rescuer risk is low and you can do so safely, and transport immediately. |
Open-mouth breathing, blue or gray gums, severe weakness, collapse, or an inability to stand indicate a critical problem. A cat that is quiet or still is not necessarily comfortable; exhaustion and low oxygen can look like passivity.
3. If the cat is breathing
Dry and warm gradually
Blot the coat with towels and wrap the cat in dry towels or a blanket. Keep the nose and mouth uncovered and position the head and neck so breathing is unobstructed. Replace soaked towels as needed. Handle the cat gently because shock, pain, or breathing difficulty can make even a familiar animal react defensively.
Do not use intense direct heat, a hot bath, or a heating device pressed against the skin. The immediate goals are to prevent further heat loss, reduce stress, and reach veterinary care—not to make the coat completely dry before leaving.

Tell the clinic that the cat was in a swimming pool, when the incident occurred if known, how long the cat may have been in the water, whether it inhaled water or was unresponsive, and whether pool chemicals could have contacted its mouth, eyes, skin, or stomach. Follow the clinic’s instructions about transport. Keep the cat in a carrier or secure box lined with towels so it cannot escape or become chilled in the vehicle.

4. If the cat is unresponsive or not breathing
Cardiopulmonary arrest is time-critical. The 2026 RECOVER guidelines recommend immediate bystander-performed basic life support for dogs and cats when the rescuer’s risk is low, together with transport to the nearest open veterinary clinic as soon as possible. Put the call on speaker if a veterinary professional or emergency dispatcher can coach you, and follow current instructions rather than relying on a remembered technique.
Move the cat onto a firm, safe surface, keep the airway as clear as you can see it, and start the BLS sequence you are trained to perform. Do not delay departure while attempting prolonged home treatment. If another person is present, one person can continue BLS while the other drives, provided doing so is safe and the clinic has been notified. If you are alone, ask the clinic how to balance compressions, ventilation, and immediate transport.
Never enter hazardous water to perform a rescue or CPR. Rescuer safety is part of the RECOVER recommendation; a second casualty cannot help the cat.
5. Why a veterinary examination is needed even when the cat seems recovered
Near-drowning can injure the lungs without producing dramatic signs at first. Water inhalation may lead to pulmonary edema or pneumonia, while cold exposure can cause hypothermia. Shock and electrolyte disturbances are also possible. These problems may become apparent after the initial rescue, and the reviewed veterinary sources do not establish a universal number of hours after which a cat can be considered safe.

VIN Veterinary Partner’s drowning guidance, revised June 4, 2026, states that pets that fall into a pool or other body of water should be evaluated by a veterinarian and observed for complications. Apparent recovery therefore does not justify skipping the call or waiting for symptoms. The veterinarian can decide whether home observation is reasonable after examining the cat and learning what happened.
6. Recognize signs that require immediate emergency care
Go directly to an emergency clinic, or follow the clinic’s urgent instructions, if any of these occur:
- Labored, rapid, noisy, or open-mouth breathing
- Blue, gray, or unusually pale gums or tongue
- Collapse, inability to stand, profound weakness, or worsening lethargy
- Confusion, unresponsiveness, seizures, or a sudden change in behavior
- Cold body temperature, uncontrolled shivering, or signs consistent with shock
Do not wait for a fixed “observation period.” A cat can deteriorate after leaving the pool, so worsening signs during travel or at home should trigger an immediate update to the veterinary team.

7. Consider pool-chemical exposure
Swimming-pool chemicals can cause gastrointestinal upset, respiratory difficulty, chemical burns, and kidney failure in cats, particularly if concentrated products were swallowed or splashed on the body. Tell the veterinarian the product name or active ingredient, the approximate concentration if known, and whether the cat licked its fur or drank pool water. Bring the container or a photograph of its label if that can be done safely.

Do not induce vomiting and do not give household remedies unless a veterinarian or a poison-control professional specifically directs you to do so. Rinse chemical residue only when a professional tells you that rinsing is appropriate and you can prevent the cat from inhaling or swallowing more material; the priority is prompt expert advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. What not to do
Do not hold the cat upside down to “drain” water
An older PetMD article dated December 23, 2010 describes inversion as a way to remove water. That advice conflicts with newer emergency guidance. Current RECOVER recommendations emphasize basic life support and rapid transport, while Veterinary Information Network guidance describes side positioning with the head and neck extended. Keep the cat in a position that supports an open airway and follow professional instructions instead of suspending or shaking it.
Do not postpone care because the cat is walking
Walking, grooming, or meowing does not rule out inhalation injury, hypothermia, or chemical exposure. Make the veterinary call while the cat is warm and quiet, rather than waiting for a cough or breathing change to prove that a problem exists.
Do not force food, water, or medication
A recently rescued cat may be nauseated, confused, or at risk of inhaling fluid. Offer nothing by mouth unless the veterinary team advises it, and never give human medication.

9. What may happen at the veterinary clinic
The team will prioritize airway, breathing, circulation, body temperature, and signs of shock. Depending on the examination, they may provide oxygen, warming, fluids, imaging, airway support, or hospital monitoring. These are possible interventions, not a checklist that every cat needs.
Give the staff a precise timeline: when the cat was last seen dry, how long it may have been submerged, whether it struggled, whether CPR or other first aid was attempted, and which chemicals were present. Details that seem minor can change decisions about respiratory monitoring and toxicology advice.
10. Prevent a second fall
Restrict access
Keep the cat indoors or behind a reliably closed barrier whenever the pool is unattended. PetMD cautions that fencing designed to keep children out may not keep cats out; cats can climb, squeeze through gaps, or jump onto nearby furniture. Check gates, doors, and loose sections of fencing rather than assuming a child-safety setup is feline-proof.
Provide a visible way out
If the cat could still reach the pool, install a sturdy exit structure designed for animals and make sure it extends from the water to the deck. Test that the cat can use it and that it cannot slip away from the edge. An emergency skimmer can help you reach a cat, but it does not replace access control.
Quick Recap
Build a response plan
- Keep a long-handled skimmer, large towels, a carrier, and a flashlight in an accessible location.
- Save the nearest open veterinary clinic’s phone number and route.
- Store the names or labels of pool chemicals where they can be found quickly.
- Teach household members never to enter dangerous water and to call for help.
- After any incident, inspect the pool area for climbable objects, open gates, and escape routes that failed.
11. A concise emergency checklist
- Reach the cat from a stable, safe position; use a pole-mounted net or skimmer if helpful.
- Place the cat on a dry surface and check responsiveness and breathing.
- If breathing, blot dry, wrap warmly, and call a veterinarian immediately.
- If unresponsive or not breathing, call an emergency clinic, begin safe bystander BLS, and arrange immediate transport.
- Report possible inhaled water, duration in the pool, and every chemical exposure.
- Do not invert, shake, medicate, induce vomiting, or delay care because the cat appears normal.
- Secure the pool before the cat returns to the area.
