If your pet pig no longer fits safely or legally in your home, contact the breeder or rescue it came from and pig-focused rescues as soon as possible. While you arrange help, keep the pig in humane care, check the rules for your exact property, and gather veterinary and care records. A rescue may offer a return, referral, foster, adoption, or sanctuary route, but intake and transport are not guaranteed; confirm what each organization can actually provide.
First, make a safe plan for the pig you have now
Do not abandon the pig, leave it somewhere unattended, or hand it to an unvetted stranger. Keep its care as stable as you can while you determine whether it can remain at home or needs a new placement. If you cannot keep the pig safely even in the short term, contact local animal control or a pig-focused rescue for immediate direction.

Keep the pig’s existing food, routine, and veterinary care consistent unless a veterinarian advises a change. Do not restrict food to try to keep the pig small. Cotton Branch Refuge Project explicitly cautions against that approach in its adoption policy. A veterinarian experienced with pigs can assess health, growth, body condition, and care needs; a size problem is not a reason to put the animal on an improvised diet.

If the pig is injured or ill, contact a veterinarian. If the housing situation is becoming unsafe, explain that clearly when calling animal control or a rescue and ask what interim options are available. A rescue’s willingness to advise or refer does not necessarily mean it can take the pig right away.

Find out whether the current home can legally and practically continue
Adult size and local restrictions can both contribute to a pet pig losing its home. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary identifies both as reasons potbellied pigs arrive at its sanctuary. A pig’s size alone does not establish whether it may stay at a particular address, and calling it a pet, companion, miniature, or emotional-support animal does not automatically override local laws or property restrictions.
Check every rule that may apply to your address
- Ask the city and county about animal ordinances, zoning, permits, and animal-control requirements.
- Check property rules, including homeowners-association restrictions where applicable.
- Ask the relevant authority how the rules apply to your specific property and pig. Do not rely on a general answer about pigs in your state or on another owner’s experience at a different address.
- Keep a record of whom you contacted, when you spoke, and any written guidance or permit information you receive.
This is a general checklist, not a determination that keeping a pig is lawful at your address. Rules differ by location, and the answer requires the exact property and applicable local requirements. If keeping the pig is allowed, you still need to decide whether you can provide suitable housing and care. If it is not allowed, ask the local authority what deadlines or steps apply while you arrange placement.
Assess care needs with a pig-experienced veterinarian
Ask a veterinarian experienced with pigs to review the pig’s health, growth, body condition, and ongoing care needs. This gives you a clearer account to share with a prospective rescue or adopter and can help identify needs that affect placement. Do not treat a seller’s description of a pig as “mini” or a projected adult size as a guarantee of how large that animal will be; the information available does not support a universal adult-weight range.

Contact the original breeder or rescue
Reach out to the breeder or rescue the pig came from before making informal arrangements with someone else. Ask whether there is a return provision, help with rehoming, a referral network, or advice for care while you wait. Share the reason the home no longer works and whether there is a time-sensitive safety or legal issue.
Do not assume that every seller or rescue is required or able to take the pig back. The American Mini Pig Rescue Advocates’ code says registered rescues should accept returned pigs or help find a new adopter; that standard applies to participating rescues, not every breeder or organization. Ask what the original source can commit to in your case and get transfer or return terms in writing where possible.
Prepare a complete, honest placement profile
A rescue or potential adopter needs enough information to judge whether it can meet this particular pig’s needs. A clear, candid profile can reduce avoidable delays and help prevent a second placement from failing. Collect what you know; do not guess at missing details.

- Identity and size: age, weight, and relevant history if known.
- Veterinary care: veterinary records, current or past medications, known health concerns, and spay/neuter status.
- Daily care: diet and routine, housing requirements, and any care instructions from the veterinarian.
- Behavior and compatibility: how the pig behaves with people and other animals, including known challenges.
- Current circumstances: why the home is changing, how soon a move may be needed, and what care you can maintain while searching.
- Photos: clear, recent images that help an organization understand the pig and its present condition.
Be transparent about behavior or care difficulties, even when they make placement feel harder. Accurate information helps a rescue or screened adopter decide what support, housing, and experience are needed. If a record is unavailable, say so rather than filling the gap with an estimate presented as fact.
Approach pig-focused rescues and sanctuaries early
Contact more than one suitable organization if needed, but verify service area and current capacity directly. Ask whether the organization accepts owner surrenders, has a waitlist, can refer a screened foster or adopter, arranges transport, or can offer interim guidance while you keep the pig. Confirm any fees, conditions, and required records with the organization; policies vary and can change.
Examples of organizations with pig-related rescue, adoption, or sanctuary work include:

- Cotton Branch Refuge Project: Publishes detailed adoption policies and tells owners who cannot care for an adopted pig to contact the organization. Its policy also states that contacting it does not guarantee immediate intake or transport.
- Lil’ Orphan Hammies: Describes miniature-pig rescue, sanctuary, adoption support, rehabilitation, networking, and education about size and zoning.
- Snouts of the Southwest: Describes owner-surrender support and rescue networking in Arizona and California, including foster or permanent-home referrals, transport, medical care, and owner support.
- Pig Luv Co: Describes rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming, and longer-term care for mini pigs.
- Hog Haven Farm: A Colorado-based pig rescue and sanctuary that says it cares for potbellied and large-breed pigs and adopts mini pigs to qualified homes.
These are examples, not endorsements or promises that a particular pig will be accepted. Their geographic reach, eligibility, intake capacity, and processes must be confirmed directly. Snouts of the Southwest reports that it has helped more than 700 pet pigs into foster or permanent homes since its founding in 2020, and an average of 80–120 piggies per year. Those are figures reported by that organization, accessed October 13, 2026; they describe its work, not national rehoming rates.
Questions to ask on the first call or message
- Do you accept owner surrenders from my area, and is intake currently open?
- If you cannot take the pig now, is there a waitlist, a foster or adopter referral, or another pig-focused organization you recommend?
- Can you help arrange transport, or must I arrange it?
- What records, application steps, fees, and conditions apply?
- Can you offer advice while I continue caring for the pig, and what would make the situation urgent enough to contact you again?
Write down the answers and any next steps. If the organization cannot accept the pig, ask whether it can suggest another route rather than treating a referral as confirmed placement. Until an organization or adopter has agreed to take responsibility and a handoff is arranged, the pig remains your responsibility.
Screen any foster or adopter before transferring the pig
A promising offer is not enough by itself. The receiving home needs permission to keep a pig, suitable housing, access to veterinary care, and the ability to manage the pig’s daily needs. Rescue screening may include an application, interview, veterinary references, and a home visit. Prefer an organization with meaningful screening and written transfer terms where available.

- Permission: Ask the prospective home to verify local rules and property restrictions for its own address.
- Housing: Discuss secure fencing and shelter suitable for the pig, not just the space visible in a photo.
- Care and veterinary access: Confirm that the person understands the pig’s routine and can access veterinary care.
- Compatibility: Talk through the pig’s behavior and interactions with people and animals already in the home.
- Transport: Agree who will arrange transport and how the pig’s records and care information will travel with it.
- Transfer terms: Clarify whether the placement is a foster, adoption, return, or sanctuary transfer, and who to contact if it does not work out.
Do not conceal behavior or health issues to secure a quick yes. A placement that is unsuitable can create another urgent move. Keep copies of the records you provide and make sure both sides understand when responsibility transfers.
What to do while placement is pending
Ask the veterinarian and the rescue organization for an interim plan matched to your pig and your circumstances. Continue humane care and the established routine while you follow up on calls, waitlists, permits, or transport. If your ability to care for the pig changes, or a deadline makes the situation more urgent, tell the rescue and local animal-control authority promptly rather than waiting for the next routine update.
Keep a simple placement log: organizations contacted, dates, responses, referrals, applications, and agreed next steps. It helps you avoid losing track of a waitlist or assuming that a referral has become a placement. Confirm the receiving home, transport details, and transfer terms before the pig leaves your care.

When the problem is the pig’s size, not a lack of care
Some owners discover that a pig’s eventual size or housing needs differ from what they expected. Others find that local zoning or property restrictions make continued care impossible. These situations are not resolved by relabeling the pig or trying to keep it small through food restriction. A veterinarian can assess the animal, while the local authority can clarify what is permitted at the address.
There is no reliable population-wide figure in the cited material for how often pet pigs are rehomed. Snouts of the Southwest makes a broad statement on its site about owners rehoming pet pigs, but it does not provide a supporting study or denominator; it should not be treated as an established national rate. Focus on a safe, verified plan for this pig rather than assumptions about how commonly others face the same problem.
