What to Do When an Adopted Shelter Dog Is Scared or Hiding

A scared shelter dog needs space, predictability, and the freedom to approach at its own pace. Here’s how to make a safe retreat and when to seek help.

Give your dog a quiet place to retreat and let it decide when to come out or approach. Don’t reach into its hiding spot, pull it out, or make it greet people or pets. Keep the home calm and predictable, reward small voluntary steps, and contact a veterinarian if fear is severe, getting worse, or may be connected to a health problem.

Why a newly adopted dog may hide

A shelter dog that hides may be trying to find distance and safety while it takes in unfamiliar sounds, smells, people, and other animals. Hiding is a reason to give the dog space—not an invitation to reach in, corner it, or carry it somewhere busier.

Fear looks different from dog to dog. Give your dog time to observe its new surroundings without expecting it to act comfortable or sociable right away.

Set up a retreat the dog can choose

Choose a low-traffic area where the dog can rest without being crowded by household members or other pets. A quiet room, a soft bed, or a crate can work. A crate is optional: use one only if your dog seems comfortable there, and allow it to enter and leave without pressure.

Keep the retreat available and let the dog come out on its own. If it hides under furniture or in another spot, avoid dragging it out. Instead, reduce household traffic around that area and make a more suitable quiet space available nearby. The ASPCA’s adoption guidance and Cornell’s guidance for fearful dogs both recommend providing a safe, quiet place.

Keep the first days calm and predictable

For now, focus on a manageable routine rather than introducing the dog to everyone and everything at once. Keep meals, bathroom trips, rest, and household activity as consistent as you can. Speak and move calmly, and give the dog time to watch what is happening from a distance.

The ASPCA’s “3-3-3 Guideline” can offer a broad orientation to the transition after adoption; it is not a deadline or a prediction of when an individual dog will stop hiding. Dogs vary, so judge progress by your dog’s comfort and behavior rather than by a fixed schedule.

Let the dog set the pace with people and pets

Don’t reach into a hiding place, pull the dog out, force it to greet visitors, or carry it into a busy room to “get used to” people. Ask visitors to ignore the dog and give it room. Keep other pets from crowding the retreat, and manage introductions so the dog can observe from a comfortable distance.

Wait for voluntary signs of interest, such as looking out, moving closer, or choosing to approach. Cornell advises against making a fearful dog confront its fears head-on; a voluntary approach paired with a reward can help. Best Friends’ advice for dogs rescued from puppy-mill situations also describes hiding as a possible response and recommends waiting until a dog is relaxed and ready before approaching. That guidance concerns a particularly fearful group of dogs; it does not establish that every shelter dog has the same history.

Reward small, comfortable steps

Keep interactions easy enough that your dog can remain comfortable. If it voluntarily looks out, takes food, or moves closer, calmly offer a reward if it is willing to accept one. If it declines, don’t coax, crowd, or insist; give it space and try again another time.

Gradual exposure means letting the dog experience something at a distance or intensity it can handle, while pairing that experience with something it values. It does not mean forcing proximity until the dog stops reacting. Avoid punishment and confrontational methods: Cornell warns that punishment can worsen fear and lead to other behavior problems.

Know when to ask for professional help

Fear may have different causes, and signs such as panting, shaking, drooling, whining, lip licking, or ears held back do not by themselves diagnose what is wrong. Contact your dog’s veterinarian if you suspect illness or pain, if fear is severe or worsening, or if it is interfering with basic care. A veterinarian can assess possible health concerns; a qualified, reward-based behavior professional can help with ongoing fear.

When looking for behavior support, ask about the professional’s experience with fearful dogs and the methods they use. Avoid advice based on yelling, leash jerks, pinch collars, or shock collars; Cornell cautions against harsh methods. If the placing shelter or rescue has post-adoption support, ask what help it recommends. The ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center works through shelter partnerships with severely fearful, undersocialized dogs and does not accept dogs directly from community members, so adopters can ask their placing organization about appropriate support.
