Dogs most often catch leptospirosis when their mouth, nose, eyes, or broken skin contact infected animal urine or soil and water contaminated by urine. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends that all dogs be vaccinated, starting at 12 weeks of age with two initial vaccinations followed by annual boosters. Your veterinarian can advise on your dog’s schedule and individual circumstances.

How do dogs catch leptospirosis?

Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira bacteria, which infected animals shed in their urine. Wild rodents are an important source. Dogs can become infected when the bacteria enter through the mouth, nose, eyes, or broken skin.

Common exposure routes include:

  • Swimming in, drinking, or wading through water contaminated with infected urine.
  • Contact with contaminated soil, mud, or wet areas.
  • Eating contaminated food or contact with contaminated bedding.
  • Contact with infected animal tissues or carcasses.

Transmission through bites or breeding is rare. The more typical concern is exposure to infected urine in the environment.

Can my dog catch leptospirosis from a puddle?

Yes, if the water has been contaminated by infected urine. Stagnant or slow-moving water can be a concern, but a puddle’s appearance cannot tell you whether it is contaminated. Exposure is also possible through wet soil or mud, so avoiding obvious standing water does not remove every risk.

Which dogs are at risk?

Leptospirosis is not limited to rural dogs or a particular breed, age, sex, or lifestyle. The AVMA says all dogs can be at risk, regardless of location or season. Risk may be higher when a dog encounters rodents, wildlife, farm animals, or other dogs, or spends time around stagnant or slow-moving water.

The AVMA describes the disease as more common in warm climates with high annual rainfall, but it can occur anywhere. Heavy rain and flooding have preceded outbreaks. Late-summer and fall risk patterns vary by region and climate; the AVMA identifies the Midwestern, eastern, and southwestern United States as hotspots, without providing precise incidence rates.

Does an indoor or city dog need the lepto vaccine?

Living indoors or in a city does not mean a dog has no risk. Dogs may encounter contaminated water or soil during walks and other time outdoors, and rodents or wildlife can be present in urban settings. Because the AVMA’s recommendation applies to all dogs, discuss vaccination even if your dog has limited outdoor access.

Which dogs should be vaccinated, and when?

The AVMA’s 2025 owner brochure recommends vaccination for all dogs. Its schedule starts at 12 weeks of age, with two initial vaccinations followed by annual boosters. The recommendation is broad; your veterinarian should confirm the timing for your dog based on vaccination history and circumstances.

If you are unsure whether your dog has received the vaccine, bring any available vaccination records to your veterinarian. Ask about the initial series, when the next dose is due, and how annual boosters fit into your dog’s care. The AVMA’s current recommendation differs from its 2011 brochure, which advised annual vaccination for dogs considered at risk; the 2025 brochure recommends vaccination for all dogs.

What signs can leptospirosis cause?

Some infected dogs show no signs. Others may have mild, brief illness or develop severe disease. Possible signs include appetite loss, vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, diarrhea, jaundice, dehydration, increased drinking or urination, weight loss, stiffness, or muscle pain. Kidney or liver failure and severe lung disease can occur.

Signs alone cannot confirm leptospirosis. A veterinarian may consider exposure and travel history, examine the dog, and use blood and urine tests or imaging such as X-rays or ultrasound. Treatment generally includes antibiotics and supportive care; severe cases may need intensive care or dialysis. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your dog may have been exposed and becomes unwell.

Can people catch leptospirosis from an infected dog?

Leptospirosis can spread to people. The AVMA says human cases in the United States are most often associated with water recreation or infected rodents; transmission from an infected dog or cat is much less common, but possible. If your dog is infected, follow the veterinarian’s treatment instructions and take precautions around urine:
