First, prevent falls and keep your dog supervised around the kennel. Then work out whether the dog is calmly choosing the roof as a resting spot or trying to escape confinement. There is no established, source-backed device or training protocol specifically for stopping kennel-top climbing; the safest response depends on what is driving it.
Make the setup safe right away
Until you understand the behavior, supervise your dog around the kennel and limit access to places where a fall could cause injury. Check that the kennel is stable and that nearby furniture or objects cannot tip, shift, or create a hazardous landing. These are basic risk-reduction steps, not a tested anti-climbing treatment.
Avoid improvised covers, restraints, or kennel alterations that could fall, trap your dog, create sharp edges, or increase distress. Remove your dog’s collar while it is inside a wire crate because it can catch on the bars, as the American Kennel Club (AKC) advises.
Notice when climbing happens and how your dog acts
Observe whether your dog climbs only when left alone, when the kennel door is closed, or when something nearby attracts attention. Also note whether the dog settles calmly or shows signs of distress. Climbing by itself does not establish a behavioral diagnosis or explain the dog’s motive.

Cornell’s Richard P. Riney Canine Health Center lists excessive barking or vocalizing, pacing, panting, elimination, and drooling as signs of stress that matter when assessing crating. Cornell advises not forcing a dog showing these signs to remain crated alone. Repeated frantic escape attempts or injury are also reasons to contact a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional rather than making confinement more restrictive; the Arizona Humane Society warns that dogs can injure themselves trying to escape.
Build comfortable, voluntary kennel use
If your dog is not panicking, make the kennel familiar and rewarding, and let the dog progress in small steps. The Humane Society of Sonoma County recommends placing it in a commonly used area, rewarding interest, offering food in or near it, and shaping entry gradually—from approaching, to stepping inside, to lying down. Increase time in very small increments according to the dog’s comfort.

- Invite exploration. Leave the kennel available in a familiar area and reward calm interest or approach.
- Reward voluntary entry. Use dog training treats or a suitable food-stuffed toy if appropriate for your dog’s chewing style. Do not use either as a promise that climbing will stop.
- Close the door only when entry is comfortable. Start with brief periods and increase duration gradually; return to an easier step if the dog becomes uncomfortable.
- Keep the association positive. The AKC advises against using the crate as punishment and recommends professional help if the dog appears panicked or will not stop crying.
Both the Humane Society of Sonoma County and the AKC describe gradual, reward-based acclimation; the pace should be set by the dog, not by a fixed timetable.
Choose an alternative if confinement is distressing
Crate training is not a remedy for separation anxiety. If your dog shows marked distress when alone or repeatedly tries to escape, ask a veterinarian or qualified trainer or behavior professional for help. Cornell notes that some dogs may do better in a larger pet-proof area or with a pet sitter while they are being acclimated and their anxiety addressed. Choose any temporary arrangement based on whether you can supervise, whether the space is safe, and whether your dog can settle there comfortably.

What is—and is not—known about kennel-top climbing
The guidance from Cornell, the Humane Society of Sonoma County, the AKC, and the Arizona Humane Society addresses crate safety, acclimation, and distress—not a validated device or protocol for preventing a dog from climbing specifically onto a kennel roof. If your dog calmly chooses an elevated place to rest, you can consider providing another safe resting option, but the behavior alone does not establish that this is what the dog wants or needs.
