What to Do When Your Dog Dies at Home

If your dog dies at home, confirm the death with a veterinarian if there is any uncertainty, then keep the body cool while you discuss a necropsy and aftercare. Check local rules and seek special guidance for possible poisoning, rabies, infectious disease, or recent euthanasia.

Finding your dog unresponsive at home is frightening, especially when you are not sure whether they have died or are in a medical crisis. First, check for breathing and a heartbeat and call a veterinarian or emergency clinic if there is any uncertainty. Once death is confirmed, keep the body cool, decide whether a necropsy is needed, and arrange cremation, burial, or approved collection.

You do not have to make every decision immediately. A well-cooled body can generally be held for a short time while you speak with your veterinarian, although sooner is better.

1. Make sure your dog has died

Do not bury, cremate, or transport your dog as deceased until you are certain. Look for breathing, a heartbeat, and purposeful responses. A veterinarian can confirm death by checking breathing, heart activity, pulse, and reflexes.

If your dog recently collapsed, choked, drowned, suffered trauma, overheated, or may have been poisoned, call an emergency veterinary hospital immediately. If the dog is unconscious and not breathing, ask the emergency veterinarian whether to begin CPR while you arrange transport. CPR is unlikely to help after a prolonged illness or an unwitnessed death, but the emergency veterinarian should guide that decision.

Call your regular veterinarian if the clinic is open. If it is closed, contact the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.

2. Call a veterinarian before making arrangements

Your veterinarian can confirm or document the death and help you choose what happens next. Tell them if the death was sudden, unexplained, traumatic, or possibly related to a toxin or infectious disease.

Ask about:

  • Transport or pickup of the body
  • Private or communal cremation
  • Local burial requirements
  • Whether a necropsy could identify the cause of death
  • Special handling if rabies, poisoning, or infection is possible
  • Updating microchip and veterinary records

If a necropsy might be useful, discuss it before burial or cremation. Once the body has been cremated or buried, that option is gone.

3. Keep the body cool while you decide

Postmortem changes begin quickly, especially in warm weather. Some urine, stool, or other fluid may be released as the muscles relax. This is normal and does not mean your dog is suffering.

  1. Place your dog on a waterproof surface, towel, blanket, or disposable absorbent pad.
  2. Gently position the body in a natural, comfortable posture. If the body becomes stiff, do not force the joints.
  3. Wrap the dog in a sheet or blanket, leaving enough room for air circulation.
  4. Move the body to the coolest practical location, away from direct sunlight and other pets.
  5. Refrigerate the body if possible. Do not freeze it if a necropsy may be needed unless the receiving veterinarian or laboratory specifically instructs you to.
  6. Arrange transfer as soon as practical.

According to the ASPCA, a well-cooled body can generally be held for up to about 24 hours. This is a general guide, not a guarantee: body size, room temperature, health condition, and time since death all matter.

A large dog may not fit in a refrigerator or freezer. In that situation, place the body on a cool concrete or cement surface while you arrange transport. Do not wrap it on the concrete, because wrapping can trap heat.

4. Decide whether to request a necropsy

A necropsy is an animal autopsy performed by a veterinarian or veterinary diagnostic laboratory. It may explain a sudden death and identify a condition that could affect people or other animals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider asking about a necropsy if:

  • Your dog died suddenly or for no obvious reason.
  • Poisoning, trauma, or an infectious disease is possible.
  • Another pet is sick, or several animals have become ill.
  • Your dog was young and an inherited condition could affect related dogs.
  • You need information for legal, insurance, breeding, or public-health reasons.

Contact the veterinarian or laboratory before freezing, burying, cremating, or shipping the body. Refrigeration is generally preferred. A refrigerated body may remain useful for a necropsy for several days, depending on its condition and the laboratory’s requirements. Freezing can complicate some testing, although a body frozen soon after death may still provide useful diagnostic information. Follow the receiving veterinarian or laboratory’s instructions.

  • Will the body be returned afterward?
  • Can the remains still be cremated or buried?
  • Could the examination affect whether the remains are viewable?
  • How much will the examination and any additional testing cost?
  • How should the body be packaged and transported?
  • How long will results take?

5. Choose what happens to the remains

Private cremation

With private cremation, the service intends to cremate your dog separately and return the ashes to you. Ask exactly what the provider means by “private,” whether your dog is cremated alone, how your dog is identified throughout the process, and when the ashes will be returned. You can also ask about urns, paw prints, fur clippings, and other memorial options.

Communal cremation

In a communal cremation, several animals are cremated together. Ashes are generally not returned because they cannot be reliably separated. Confirm this before signing an authorization form; terms such as “group cremation” or “shared cremation” may also be used.

Home burial

Do not assume that burying a dog in your garden is legal simply because you own the property. Rules can vary by country, state, county, city, zoning district, and homeowners’ association. They may address burial depth, distance from wells or waterways, property ownership, and whether euthanasia medication was used.

Before burying your dog, contact your local animal-control department, health department, solid-waste office, or state veterinarian. If burial is permitted, ask for the current requirements from an official source.

Animal control or municipal collection

Some communities provide deceased-pet pickup or require animal-control agencies to handle animal remains. Call for instructions before placing the body in household trash, setting it out for collection, or leaving it outdoors. The agency may direct you to an approved crematory, pet cemetery, renderer, or landfill.

6. Take extra precautions in special situations

Suspected poisoning

If poisoning is possible, speak with a veterinarian or animal-poison service before burial or cremation. Preserve medication bottles, bait packaging, food, vomit, and other potentially relevant material. Keep children and other animals away from the body and any contaminated items.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the United States, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center can be reached at (888) 426-4435. A consultation fee may apply.

Recent euthanasia

Many euthanasia solutions contain sodium pentobarbital, which can remain in the body after death. Wildlife, livestock, or another pet can be poisoned if they eat part of an exposed carcass.

Keep a euthanized dog indoors or otherwise inaccessible to scavengers. Do not leave the body outside, put it somewhere animals can dig it up, or bury it in a way that allows access. Follow your veterinarian’s disposal instructions and local regulations.

Possible rabies exposure

If your dog bit or scratched someone, fought with a potentially rabid animal, or showed suspicious neurological behavior, avoid unnecessary handling. Contact your veterinarian and local or state health department before burial or cremation.

Rabies testing requires specific handling of the carcass and brain tissue. If testing is being considered, do not dispose of the body until public-health officials or a veterinarian tell you how to proceed. Refrigeration, rather than freezing, is generally preferred while arrangements are made.

Possible infectious disease

Wear disposable gloves when handling the body or fluids. Wash your hands afterward and keep children and other pets away from contaminated bedding, bowls, vomit, urine, and feces.

Ask the veterinarian whether your dog’s belongings or household surfaces need special cleaning. This is especially important if leptospirosis is possible: infected urine can spread the bacteria to people and animals. The CDC’s guidance on leptospirosis in pets includes precautions for handling urine and disinfecting contaminated areas.

7. Transport your dog safely

Your veterinarian, crematorium, or animal-control service may have specific requirements. Ask before you leave home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Small dog: Use a sturdy box or pet carrier lined with absorbent material.
  • Large dog: Place the body on a blanket, sheet, or tarp. Two adults should lift together.
  • Any size: Keep the body covered, cool, and secured during the journey.

Do not lift a heavy dog alone. A back injury can make an already difficult situation worse. Do not send a body through a courier or ordinary shipping service unless the receiving laboratory or crematorium has specifically approved the packaging and shipment.

8. Update records and make a memorial decision

Aftercare providers and veterinarians may ask for your dog’s name, approximate weight, identification number, and your preferred disposition. Once you are ready, update the microchip registry and cancel recurring medication, food, insurance, or subscription orders.

You may want to save a collar tag, take a paw print, keep a small fur clipping, plant a tree, or create a photo book. None of these choices is required. A simple goodbye is just as valid as an elaborate memorial.

Contact a veterinarian if a surviving pet stops eating, seems ill, tries to escape, or has severe or persistent behavior changes. Do not assume every change is grief; illness, infection, or exposure to the same toxin may also be responsible.

There is no veterinary requirement that surviving pets see the body, and it is not appropriate in every case—particularly when poisoning, rabies, or infectious disease is suspected. Ask your veterinarian if you are considering it.

You also do not need to get another pet immediately. Wait until everyone in the household is ready to build a new relationship, rather than expecting a new dog to replace the one who died.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assumption What to do instead
“I can always bury my dog in the yard.” Check local and property-specific rules first.
“The body should go straight into the freezer.” Refrigerate if possible and ask the receiving veterinarian or laboratory before freezing, especially if a necropsy may be needed.
“A euthanized dog cannot harm wildlife.” Keep the body inaccessible because pentobarbital can poison scavengers.
“Ashes are always returned.” Confirm whether the cremation is private or communal.
“A sudden death must have been natural.” Ask a veterinarian whether a necropsy is appropriate.
“I must decide everything right now.” Cool the body and call a veterinarian; you can usually take a little time to choose.
“The other pets need to see the body.” There is no universal requirement; ask your veterinarian, especially if poisoning, rabies, or infectious disease is suspected.

FAQ

How long can I keep my dog’s body at home?

A well-cooled body can generally be held for up to about 24 hours, but it can deteriorate sooner in warm conditions or with a large dog. Refrigerate if possible and arrange transfer promptly. Ask your veterinarian if a longer delay is unavoidable.

Should I put my dead dog in the freezer?

Contact the receiving veterinarian or laboratory first if you may want a necropsy. Refrigeration is generally preferred, but freezing can complicate some testing and may still leave useful diagnostic information depending on the case and how soon the body was frozen.

Can I bury my dog in my backyard?

Maybe, but the answer depends on local law, zoning, environmental rules, property ownership, and whether the dog was euthanized. Contact animal control, your local health department, or another relevant local authority before burying the body.

What should I do if my dog may have been poisoned?

Do not bury or cremate the body until you speak with a veterinarian or animal-poison service. Preserve packaging, medication containers, food, vomit, or bait that may help identify the toxin, and keep people and other animals away from the area.

The Bottom Line

If your dog dies at home, first call a veterinarian if death is not completely certain. Then keep the body cool and protected, ask about a necropsy before choosing aftercare, and confirm local rules for cremation, burial, or collection. Handle suspected poisoning, rabies, infectious disease, and recent euthanasia as special cases rather than disposing of the body normally.
