If poisoning is possible, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service immediately. Keep your pet and yourself safe, and arrange prompt transport; do not wait for symptoms to worsen.
1. Call a veterinary professional first
- Call your regular veterinary practice. Its voicemail may explain the after-hours protocol or name a partner clinic. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends starting with your veterinarian because they know your pet’s medical history: FDA guidance on what to do if your pet gets sick.
- If the practice is unavailable, call a local emergency animal hospital. Ask whether it is receiving patients, confirm its address, and describe what is happening. The hospital may advise you by phone or recommend an examination. Call ahead when feasible so staff can prepare.
- If you suspect poisoning, contact a veterinarian, emergency hospital, or poison-control service immediately. The FDA lists ASPCA Animal Poison Control at 1-888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661. The FDA says both are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and charge a consultation fee. Check current numbers, fees, and access when you call. A poison-control consultation does not replace hospital care if your pet has serious symptoms or the specialist directs you to go in.
For a possible toxin exposure, keep the packaging or take a photo. Be ready to share what your pet may have eaten or contacted, the approximate amount and time, and your pet’s species, breed, age, sex, and weight if known. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional tells you to.

2. Recognize signs that need urgent attention
Call promptly for severe or alarming symptoms. ASPCA warning signs include pale gums, rapid breathing, a weak or rapid pulse, an unusual body temperature, difficulty standing, apparent paralysis, unconsciousness, seizures, and excessive bleeding. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) also identifies excessive panting, drooling, unsteadiness, abnormal gum or tongue color, and collapse as possible heat-stress signs. These are practical warning signs, not a complete diagnostic checklist; if you are unsure, call a veterinary professional.
- Collapse, unconsciousness, seizures, or difficulty breathing: call an emergency hospital and follow its instructions.
- Heavy bleeding: apply firm, direct pressure with a clean cloth or towel while arranging immediate veterinary care.
- Possible heatstroke: begin gentle cooling while seeking prompt hospital care; do not wait to see if the pet improves.
- Possible poisoning: call immediately, even if your pet seems normal.
3. Use first aid only as a bridge to care
First aid may help while you arrange treatment, but it is not a substitute for veterinary care. The AVMA’s 2025 pet first-aid brochure gives these examples:

Severe bleeding
Press a clean cloth or towel firmly over the bleeding site and go to the closest veterinary hospital. If blood soaks through, place more material on top; do not remove the first layer.
Possible heatstroke
Warning signs can include heavy panting or rapid breathing, drooling, weakness or drowsiness, confusion, vomiting or diarrhea, and abnormal dry or sticky gums. Move your pet to shade or a comfortably cool indoor area. Apply towels wetted with room-temperature water around the neck, armpits, and groin, replacing them every few minutes, and head to the closest hospital promptly. Do not put your pet in a cool- or cold-water tub.
Choking or collapse
Treat either as an emergency and call a veterinary hospital for immediate instructions. The correct first aid can depend on species and size, so do not improvise a maneuver if you are uncertain or if it would delay professional care.

Pain or fear can make even a familiar pet bite. Move slowly, keep your face and hands away from the mouth, and avoid unnecessary handling. Ask another person to help if you can do so safely.
- For a small pet, use an appropriate carrier or sturdy box. An open-topped carrier or box may make it easier to move an injured cat.
- For a larger injured dog, a blanket or suitable rigid support can help you move the animal with less twisting or bending.
- If a spinal injury, broken bone, or nervous-system injury may be involved, keep the pet quiet and minimize movement. Call the hospital for advice on how to move the animal.
- If someone is with you, have them call the hospital while you prepare transport.
5. Prepare for after-hours emergencies before one happens
Keep the local emergency clinic’s name, phone number, and address easy to find. Ask your regular veterinarian what to do when the office is closed, and keep an appropriate carrier available for a small pet. Knowing the route and after-hours protocol can make it easier to act quickly.
