Call the emergency clinic before you leave when you can do so without delaying urgent care; staff may give you arrival instructions and an approximate wait. Bring any available medical information, explain what happened and when, and ask how to transport your pet safely if you are unsure.
When to seek emergency veterinary care
Some signs can indicate a veterinary emergency, but a symptom list cannot diagnose your pet. Contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic if you are concerned, and seek prompt advice for warning signs such as:

- Difficulty breathing, unresponsiveness, or a seizure.
- Repeated vomiting or severe diarrhea.
- Bleeding, a significant injury, or an eye injury.
- A swollen or bloated abdomen, or gums with an abnormal color.
- Sudden weakness or paralysis.
These warning signs are identified by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). If your pet is in immediate distress, do not delay urgent care in order to make a call.
What to do before you leave
Call the clinic when practical
Tell the emergency clinic what you are seeing, when it began, and whether there was an injury or possible exposure to something harmful. Calling ahead can give staff a chance to advise you about arrival and prepare for the situation; the clinic may also be able to provide an approximate wait time. Follow its directions, since intake procedures and hours vary. AAHA recommends calling ahead when seeking emergency care (AAHA’s guidance on choosing a veterinarian).

Gather useful information
Bring available medical records, and be ready to give a concise account of what changed and when. Tell the team about any medication or home remedy you have given and any possible toxin exposure. If you know what your pet may have ingested, bring its packaging or a photo of the label when that is practical. The emergency clinic may not have access to your regular veterinarian’s records, so useful details can help the team assess your pet (VCA, “How Do Emergency Clinics Work?”).
Plan safe transport
Keep your pet as calm as possible and avoid unnecessary movement, especially after an injury. A secure carrier can help transport a small pet safely; a leash may suit a dog that can walk without worsening its condition. The right approach depends on your pet’s size and injury. If moving or handling your pet may be unsafe, call the clinic for instructions rather than forcing the animal into a carrier or vehicle. A frightened pet loose in a moving vehicle can make the drive dangerous, and transport guidance for an injured dog may differ (VCA emergency-clinic guidance; VCA, “Emergencies in Dogs”).

Ask about payment and bring insurance details
Fees, deposits, and payment options differ among facilities. Ask the clinic what it requires and, if you have pet insurance, bring your insurance information and know what your policy covers. Do not assume that a fee or payment arrangement listed by one hospital applies elsewhere (VCA emergency-clinic guidance; VCA Milwaukee Emergency Center for Animals, “Your Visit”).

The team assesses urgency
Staff may first ask for a brief history and assess how urgently your pet needs attention. Emergency patients are not necessarily seen in arrival order: life-threatening cases may be prioritized. AAHA recommends calling to ask about an approximate wait, but neither a particular wait nor a fixed sequence can be assumed across clinics (AAHA).

The veterinarian recommends next steps
After an initial assessment, the veterinarian may examine your pet and recommend tests such as radiographs or lab work. The team may then discuss treatment options, an estimate, and prognosis. What happens—and how quickly—depends on your pet’s condition and the clinic’s process.
For example, VCA Veterinary Specialty Center describes a trained triage staff member taking the pet’s history before the veterinarian proposes a treatment plan and estimate. That is this center’s stated process, not a promise that every emergency hospital follows the same intake model (VCA Veterinary Specialty Center, “Emergency”).

- Pet insurance information, if applicable.
