Feed a growing kitten a complete and balanced food labeled for kitten growth or all life stages. Start with the package’s feeding guide, divide the daily amount into several small meals, and adjust portions as your kitten grows with help from your veterinarian. Wet and dry kitten foods can both be appropriate. Newborn or orphaned kittens need a separate feeding plan.
Choose food made for growth
Look for a complete and balanced food labeled for kitten growth or for all life stages. In the United States, the package’s AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement is a practical way to check that the food is intended to meet the needs of growing cats. Kitten foods are formulated for growth and are often more energy dense than adult foods, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Do not use food labeled only for adult maintenance as the default diet for a growing kitten.

How much should you feed a kitten?
There is no single number of cans, grams, or cups that fits every kitten. The right amount depends on age, weight, growth, health, activity, and how many calories the specific food provides.

- Use the food package’s feeding chart as a starting estimate, following the directions for your kitten’s age and weight.
- Measure the daily amount and divide it among meals. Portion feeding makes it easier to track how much your kitten eats.
- Monitor growth and body condition, and ask your veterinarian to adjust the amount if you are concerned about weight gain, appetite, or health.
For orphaned kittens, weight tracking is particularly important. VCA Animal Hospitals reports a typical birth weight of 80–120 grams and average gains of about 100 grams per week during the first six months; these figures are monitoring context, not a formula for calculating food portions. See VCA’s orphaned-kitten guidance for the context and care recommendations.
How often should you feed a kitten?
Weaned kittens that are still growing
Offer several small meals rather than relying on one or two large ones. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine says kittens up to six months usually do best with three meals a day. VCA describes three to four or more small meals as useful for many growing kittens. These are practical guides, not a rigid schedule for every kitten; age, routine, and veterinary advice matter.

Newborn and orphaned kittens
Newborn care is different from feeding a weaned kitten. Whenever possible, maternal milk is the appropriate early nutrition. For an orphan, VCA recommends commercial kitten milk replacer rather than cow’s milk or homemade mixtures, and says the replacer should be the sole nutrition until about three to four weeks of age, when weaning may begin.

Wet food or dry food: which should you choose?
Either can be suitable if it is complete and balanced for kitten growth or all life stages. VCA says kittens can have wet or dry kitten food by six to eight weeks of age. The available veterinary guidance does not establish a universal winner, so consider what your kitten accepts, what fits your household’s feeding routine, and any advice specific to your kitten’s health.
How to change a kitten’s food

Keep feeding a growth-formulated food until your kitten’s growth is complete, typically around 12 months. A gradual transition to adult food is appropriate then, but timing can vary, including for large-breed cats. Ask your veterinarian when to make the change for your individual cat.
