What to Know Before Adopting a Rabbit, Guinea Pig, or Other Small Pet

Small pets have different needs. Assess space, companionship, daily care, costs, and veterinary access, then ask a rescue about the individual animal before adopting.

Before adopting, make sure your home, daily routine, budget, and access to a veterinarian experienced with the species can meet the animal’s needs for its whole life. Rabbits and guinea pigs need same-species companionship and substantial secure space; other small pets have different housing, social, and activity needs. Ask the rescue about the individual animal and prepare its setup before bringing it home.

The guidance linked here comes from the UK RSPCA. Adoption procedures, fees, and local rules vary, so confirm details with rescues and relevant authorities where you live.

How to decide whether a small pet fits your household

“Small pet” describes animals with very different needs, not a single easy-care category. Compare the animal’s companionship needs, housing, daily routine, handling preferences, likely lifespan, and veterinary access with what your household can provide. A rescue can help assess the individual animal rather than relying on a blanket rule about a species.

  • Companionship: Rabbits and guinea pigs need at least one companion of the same species, according to RSPCA rabbit companionship guidance and RSPCA guinea pig guidance. Many other small pets are social, while most hamsters usually live alone. Ask the rescue how to meet this animal’s social needs and whether it is already bonded to another animal.
  • Space and setup: Find out what enclosure and exercise area this animal needs. A small cage should not be assumed suitable. The RSPCA says rabbits and guinea pigs need large, secure accommodation with room to move and explore.
  • Daily routine and handling: Consider when the animal is active and how it responds to noise and handling. Some small pets are delicate, nocturnal, or easily stressed. Rabbits are fragile prey animals and may prefer not to be picked up; calm, gentle interaction that respects their space is more appropriate.
  • Household fit: Consider children, other pets, noise, available space, rental permission, and how much time an adult can give to daily care. Ask the rescue how this particular animal responds to the conditions in your home.
  • Veterinary access: Identify a local veterinarian confident treating the species before you adopt. Do not assume every practice has relevant experience.

What commitment and lifespan should you plan for?

Plan for the animal’s entire life, not only the adoption process. The RSPCA gives a typical rabbit lifespan of 8 to 12 years, with some rabbits living longer. Its general small-pet guidance gives around two years for some hamsters and five years or more for guinea pigs, ferrets, and chinchillas. These are broad species-level figures, not predictions for an individual animal; ask the rescue what is known about the animal’s age and history.

How to prepare for children and other pets

Small animals are not automatically suitable starter pets. The RSPCA advises that children should always be supervised and that an adult must be responsible for daily care. A child’s interest or willingness to help does not replace an adult’s ongoing responsibility.

Think about whether the household can give the animal a quiet, secure place and respect its activity and handling preferences. Rabbits may find being picked up stressful, and some small pets are delicate or sensitive to noise. Other household animals may create stress or a safety risk; follow the rescue’s advice about separation and safe housing rather than assuming introductions are appropriate.

What costs belong in your budget?

The adoption fee is only one part of the cost. The RSPCA lists housing, food, bedding, toys and enrichment, grooming, pet sitting where needed, routine veterinary care, and unexpected illness or injury as expenses to plan for. The fee varies by centre and species and may contribute to health checks, veterinary treatment, neutering where appropriate, daily care, and rehoming preparation. Ask the local rescue for its current fee and what it covers rather than treating one centre’s price as universal.

Insurance may help with unexpected veterinary bills, but policies differ in cost, exclusions, limits, and which species they cover. Check those details for the animal you are considering; do not assume a policy or price applies equally to rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small pets.

How to assess an individual rescue animal

Rescue procedures vary by centre and animal. The RSPCA describes a process that may include browsing animal profiles, applying, meeting the animal if the application is suitable, preparing a safe home, and completing paperwork and fees. Some animals, including pairs, may need more than one visit. Follow the particular rescue’s process and ask what it needs to assess whether your home is a good match.

Before committing, ask the rescue:

  • What is known about this animal’s personality, history, health, and routine?
  • Is it bonded to a companion, or does it need a compatible same-species companion? What introduction or matching advice does the rescue recommend?
  • What enclosure, exercise area, bedding, diet, and enrichment does this animal need?
  • Which health checks, treatments, neutering, or other care have already been completed, and what follow-up is expected?
  • What settling-in support is available after adoption?
  • What is the fee, and are there application, home-check, or landlord-permission requirements where you live?

Do not assume every rescue animal has received the same care. The RSPCA notes that many rescue rabbits are already paired with a companion, neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated, but those details are not guaranteed for every rabbit. Confirm the individual animal’s status and request relevant health information or records.

What to have ready before bringing the animal home

  1. Confirm the match. Read the animal’s rescue profile and discuss its temperament, history, social needs, and routine with the rescue.
  2. Check practical requirements. Make sure your household can provide the appropriate companionship, secure living space, daily care, and adult supervision where children are involved.
  3. Arrange veterinary care. Find a veterinarian confident treating the species. Ask the rescue what care has already been provided and what follow-up is due.
  4. Prepare the home. Set up the species-appropriate housing, exercise area, bedding, food, and enrichment recommended for this animal before arrival.
  5. Complete the rescue’s process. Follow its application, meeting, paperwork, and fee requirements; ask about any local rules or landlord permission that apply.

If one animal is not a fit, ask the rescue whether another animal might suit your household better. A careful match is more useful than choosing based only on size or appearance.
