Before adopting an adult dog, learn what is known about that individual dog’s health, behavior, routine, and history—and what remains unknown. Age alone cannot tell you whether a dog is house-trained, comfortable with children, or easy to care for. Ask the shelter, rescue, or foster specific questions, then prepare for a gradual, supervised transition at home.
What to ask before adopting an adult dog
Ask about the dog you are considering, not what adult dogs are generally like. A foster caregiver may have seen the dog in a home, while a shelter may have had fewer chances to observe everyday behavior. Even a detailed history is only a snapshot: a dog’s behavior can change as they settle into a new environment.
- Background: What is known about the dog’s previous home or homes and, if known, the reason for surrender?
- Health: What veterinary care has the dog received? Can you review the records? Are vaccinations current, and has the dog been spayed or neutered? Ask about medications, chronic conditions, pain, and mobility concerns.
- Observed behavior: How does the dog respond to handling, visitors, children, other dogs, cats, food, and toys? How do they cope when left alone? Ask what has not been assessed, too.
- Training and routine: Is the dog house-trained or crate-trained? What food, feeding and bathroom schedule, sleep routine, and equipment are familiar?
- Support and policies: What training or behavior support might be needed, and what help does the organization offer after adoption? Ask about the adoption fee, included services, any trial or return policy, and follow-up requirements. Fees and policies vary, so confirm them with the organization.
Do not treat an untested behavior as a known strength or problem. If a dog has not lived with cats, for example, ask how the organization assesses that uncertainty and what a careful introduction would involve.
How to decide whether the dog fits your household
Compare the dog’s needs with the life you can reliably provide. Consider energy and exercise, size and handling, health and mobility, training needs, compatibility with household members and pets, time alone, and likely ongoing care. Then weigh those needs against your schedule, experience, home setup, budget, and access to veterinary or behavior support.

There is no universally best age, breed mix, or adoption route. A good decision depends on the individual dog and the household’s capacity to meet that dog’s needs.
What to prepare before bringing the dog home
Set up a calm, safe area
Choose a quiet place where the dog can rest and observe without being pressured to interact. A crate can be one option if it suits the dog and is used safely; a gated room or exercise pen may work better for some dogs and homes. Match any crate or pen to the dog, with suitable space and ventilation, and ask the organization what the dog is accustomed to.

Pet-proof the home before arrival. Secure doors and windows, electrical cords, medications, cleaning products, unsafe foods, and plants known to be poisonous to dogs. Gates, a pen, or a crate can help manage space and supervision when appropriate.
Gather essentials and plan secure travel
Prepare a leash, collar, identification tag, food, bowls, treats, bed, and blanket. A crate or gate may help manage the home environment; for the ride home, use a travel crate or an appropriate vehicle restraint such as a seat-belt harness. Ask how the dog has traveled before, and choose equipment that fits the dog and vehicle. Check that the dog’s identification and microchip contact details are current.

Plan veterinary care and costs
Arrange a veterinary appointment soon after adoption. Bring the records you receive and ask the veterinarian to help clarify follow-up care, medications, health concerns, and any mobility needs. Build a budget from the dog’s known care needs and current local prices rather than relying on old national averages.
The American Kennel Club reports cost averages from a voluntary survey of 1,001 respondents conducted over two weeks in July 2004. AKC describes the self-selected results as anecdotal and says they are not guaranteed to represent the wider population. They are historical, not a current budget guide; no current, directly comparable estimate specific to adopting an adult dog is established here. Get current local quotes and use the individual dog’s medical and care records to plan.

How to help an adult dog adjust at home
Keep the first days quiet and predictable. Use familiar food and routines when possible, limit visitors and activity, and give the dog time to explore at their own pace. Keep other household pets separated initially; introduce them gradually under supervision, with food and valued toys kept apart during early introductions.
- Start with limited access. Let the dog settle in a quiet area and expand access to the home gradually, while supervising closely.
- Establish a routine. Take the dog outside frequently while you learn their signals, and reward the behavior you want. Even a previously house-trained dog may have accidents in a new home.
- Prevent escapes. Secure doors and watch for door-dashing while the dog learns the layout and household routine.
- Keep introductions gradual. Give the dog space to observe people and pets. Avoid forcing contact, and supervise interactions as they get acquainted.
Use the “3-3-3” idea as a loose guide
The American Kennel Club presents animal behaviorist, ethologist, and author Patricia McConnell’s “3-3-3” rule of thumb: the first three days may involve stress and limited expression of the dog’s usual behavior; after about three weeks, many dogs may be more settled; and around three months may be needed to fit into the household routine. McConnell’s statement, reproduced by AKC, is: “For the first three days, dogs are often in a bit of shock, and don’t show you too much about who they are until they’ve been there a few days. After three weeks, many dogs have settled and behave as though they feel like they are home now, but they really don’t fit into your routine until about three months have gone by.”

This is a heuristic, not a scientific timetable or promise. Individual dogs may adjust faster or take longer, so respond to the dog in front of you rather than treating a particular date as a deadline.
Consider insurance and other ongoing support
If you are considering pet insurance, read current policy documents carefully. The ASPCA advises researching coverage and notes that many plans have waiting periods and do not cover pre-existing conditions; terms vary by policy. For training or behavior concerns, ask the adoption organization or your veterinarian about qualified help suited to the dog’s needs.
