The largest bear known from the fossil record is generally identified as Arctotherium angustidens, an extinct South American short-faced bear. A huge male fossil from Buenos Aires Province was estimated at roughly 2,162–4,500 pounds (981–2,041 kilograms), depending on the calculation method. The study’s preferred upper estimate was about 3,500 pounds (1,588 kilograms), while a skeletal reconstruction stood just under 11 feet upright.
Those figures describe an incomplete fossil and mathematical estimates, not a directly weighed animal. The popular claim that this bear was “four times the size of a grizzly” is not a verified scientific ratio: the sources do not define which measurement is being multiplied or provide a directly comparable grizzly baseline.

The largest bear ever recorded from fossils
Arctotherium angustidens is the best-supported candidate for the largest bear known to science. Leopoldo H. Soibelzon and Blaine W. Schubert described the specimen in a 2011 Journal of Paleontology paper and wrote, “To our knowledge, this specimen now represents the largest bear ever recorded.” The phrase “to our knowledge” matters. It identifies the largest individual documented in the available fossil record, not proof that no larger bear ever lived.
This species was a giant short-faced bear from South America. It was not a modern grizzly that grew to unusual proportions, and it was not measured alive. Its record status comes from the size of surviving bones, estimates derived from those bones, and comparison with other known bears.

How big was Arctotherium angustidens?
Estimated body mass
National Geographic’s 2011 account of the study reported mass estimates ranging from 2,162 to 4,500 pounds (981–2,041 kilograms), because different allometric methods produced different results. The authors regarded the highest value as too high and proposed an approximate upper mass of about 3,500 pounds (1,588 kilograms) for the male.
Allometric equations infer body mass from measurements such as the dimensions of weight-bearing limb bones. They are useful for fossils, but they are not scales. A range is therefore more honest than a single precise number. The 3,500-pound figure should be described as an estimate for this unusually large male, not as the normal size of every member of the species.
Reconstructed standing height
The same account described a skeletal reconstruction standing just under 11 feet (about 3.35 meters) upright. That is a reconstruction assembled from fossil anatomy, not a tape measurement of a living bear. National Geographic noted that this height is about the same as the maximum standing height reported for the largest grizzly and polar bears, while Arctotherium was considerably more robust and massive.

What the measurements actually show
| Measure | Reported evidence | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Body mass | 2,162–4,500 pounds across methods; the study’s approximate upper estimate was about 3,500 pounds | Method-dependent estimate from incomplete fossil remains |
| Upright height | Just under 11 feet in a skeletal reconstruction | Reconstructed standing height, not a measured living animal |
| Age of the fossil-bearing deposits | About one million years old; Ensenadan early-to-middle Pleistocene sediments | An approximate geological age, not an exact birth or death date |
| Sex and life stage | Old-aged male, based on overall size, fused growth plates and pathological changes | The record specimen was an exceptionally large adult, not a species-wide average |
Why “four times the size of a grizzly” is not a scientific measurement
“Size” can mean mass, length, shoulder height, skull dimensions or upright height. Multiplying one of those values by four gives a different claim from multiplying another. The available accounts do not identify an axis for the fourfold comparison, and they do not provide a matching grizzly statistic that would support a calculation.

For height, the reconstruction of A. angustidens was just under 11 feet upright—roughly comparable to the maximum standing height of the largest modern grizzlies and polar bears. The fossil bear’s distinction was its greater body bulk and limb robustness, not a demonstrated fourfold increase in height. A valid comparison would need the same measurement on both animals and the same basis, such as maximum individual mass versus maximum individual mass or reconstructed upright height versus measured upright height.
It is reasonable to call the extinct bear dramatically heavier and more powerfully built than a typical grizzly. It is not justified to present “four times” as an established ratio without defining the measurement and the grizzly reference value.
Where the giant fossil came from
Discovery at La Plata
The bones were discovered during construction at a hospital in La Plata, Buenos Aires Province, in 1935. National Geographic reported that the deposits were approximately one million years old. The primary study places the specimen in Ensenadan sediments of the early-to-middle Pleistocene Pampean region.
What survived
The specimen included both arm bones, part of a shoulder blade and some hand bones. Some fossils had gone missing, so the skeleton was incomplete even before the scientific reconstruction. The available bones nevertheless preserved enough information about the animal’s supporting limbs and overall scale to permit mass estimates.

Evidence of an injured old male
Soibelzon and Schubert identified the individual as an old-aged male from its overall size, fused epiphyses (the ends of growing bones) and pathological changes. The paper records serious injuries sustained during life. Those injuries make the specimen more than a size record: they provide evidence that this very large bear survived substantial physical trauma before it died.
How scientists estimated the mass
Allometric equations
The primary paper used a series of equations that relate skeletal dimensions to body mass in living and fossil mammals. Large, weight-bearing bones are especially informative because they must support the animal’s body. Researchers insert measurements from the fossil into equations calibrated against animals whose masses are known.
Why methods disagree
Different equations emphasize different bones, proportions and reference species. A bear with unusually thick limbs can produce a higher estimate than a more lightly built animal of similar length. Incomplete remains also require assumptions about missing parts. That is why the reported interval spans more than 2,000 pounds and why the study authors rejected the highest result as implausible.

Was it bigger than a grizzly?
Mass and body build
The evidence supports a bear that was substantially more massive than an ordinary modern grizzly. The proposed upper estimate of about 3,500 pounds is an estimate for an exceptional male, and the reconstructed skeleton was described as more robust than the largest standing grizzlies. That combination—similar maximum upright height but much greater bulk—is why the animal is often portrayed as gigantic.
Why a direct ratio cannot be calculated
No directly comparable grizzly mass dataset accompanies the fossil estimates used here. A ratio would also have to specify whether it compares an exceptional fossil male with a typical adult grizzly, a record grizzly with an average fossil individual, or some other pairing. Without those choices, “four times” can sound precise while comparing unlike quantities.
The safest conclusion is narrower: A. angustidens was one of the most massive bears known, and the fossil male appears heavier and more powerfully built than modern grizzlies. The evidence does not establish that it was four times as large on any single defined measure.

The species was the earliest, largest and most carnivorous of the five described South American species in the genus Arctotherium, according to Soibelzon and Schubert. Its powerful forelimbs and massive frame would have made it an imposing terrestrial carnivore. National Geographic conveyed the authors’ characterization of it as “probably the most powerful terrestrial carnivoran of the late Cenozoic.” That is an expert interpretation of its anatomy and ecological setting, not a measured force value.

The fossil’s damaged bones also show that great size did not make the animal invulnerable. Serious injuries and pathological changes indicate a life involving substantial physical stress, whether from fights, hunting, accidents or other causes that the bones cannot identify on their own.
What did the giant short-faced bear eat?
The evidence points to a flexible diet rather than an animal that lived exclusively on meat. Morphological features and broken teeth are consistent with chewing bones, and the species’ anatomy supports the ability to process substantial animal foods. National Geographic’s account also emphasized that these clues should not be turned into a claim that every meal was meat.
Fossils can reveal tooth wear, breakage and jaw mechanics, but they do not list an individual animal’s complete menu or provide exact dietary percentages. A mixed diet could have included carcasses, prey and plant foods, with the balance changing by season, habitat and opportunity. The available evidence supports dietary versatility while leaving the precise proportions unresolved.

Why did this bear become so large?
Soibelzon and Schubert proposed an ecological explanation linked to the Great American Biotic Interchange, the period when North and South American animal communities mixed after land connections formed. They suggested that South America may have offered plentiful herbivores while supporting fewer competing large carnivores. Under those conditions, a bear able to exploit large animal resources could have benefited from increasing body size and a more carnivorous lifestyle.
This is a hypothesis about evolutionary pressure, not a direct observation from the fossil. The bones establish size, age, sex indicators and injuries; they do not record population density, competition or the exact food supply. The proposed explanation fits the species’ anatomy and timing, but it remains an interpretation of the ecological context.
What “largest bear ever” does—and does not—mean
What the record supports
- Arctotherium angustidens is the leading fossil-record candidate for the largest known bear.
- The famous specimen was an old male represented by incomplete remains from Buenos Aires Province.
- Mass estimates span 2,162–4,500 pounds, with an approximate upper estimate around 3,500 pounds favored over the highest calculation.
- A skeletal reconstruction reached just under 11 feet upright and showed a very robust body.
What remains uncertain
- The exact mass of the individual cannot be recovered because no living measurement exists.
- The fourfold-grizzly comparison has no defined measurement axis or directly matching baseline.
- The animal’s exact diet and the relative importance of predation, scavenging and plant foods cannot be reconstructed completely.
- The evolutionary explanation involving abundant herbivores and fewer competing carnivores is proposed, not proven by a single fossil.
A concise timeline of the record specimen
- About one million years ago: the bear lived during the early-to-middle Pleistocene, when its remains were deposited in the Pampean region.
- 1935: bones were found during hospital construction in La Plata, Argentina.
- 2011: Soibelzon and Schubert published the description and record claim in the Journal of Paleontology.
- 2011 account: National Geographic summarized the competing mass estimates, the just-under-11-foot reconstruction and the specimen’s comparison with modern bears.
- 2015: Cambridge’s article record listed the paper’s online publication date as July 14, 2015, while retaining the 2011 journal citation.
Sources behind the measurements
The primary scientific source is Leopoldo H. Soibelzon and Blaine W. Schubert, “The largest known bear, Arctotherium angustidens, from the early Pleistocene Pampean region of Argentina,” Journal of Paleontology 85(1), pages 69–75 (2011). An East Tennessee State University repository preserves the abstract and citation information. National Geographic’s 2011 report provides accessible context for the mass range, reconstructed height and discovery history. The primary paper should take precedence for the fossil description and the carefully qualified record claim.
