It is a veterinary-directed, usually temporary feeding method—not a safe do-it-yourself procedure. Have a veterinarian assess the puppy, select the equipment and feeding plan, and demonstrate the technique in person: incorrect placement or feeding can send formula into the lungs and cause life-threatening complications. If the puppy is chilled, do not feed until it has been rewarmed and a veterinarian has advised you.
When tube feeding may be appropriate
A veterinarian may consider tube or gavage feeding when a puppy cannot take enough nutrition by nursing or bottle because it is too weak to suckle, or because a cleft palate makes ordinary feeding unsafe. It is generally used as a temporary bridge until the puppy can nurse or bottle-feed. A healthy puppy that can feed effectively should not be tube-fed for convenience. AAHA’s canine life-stage nutrition guidance and Royal Canin Academy’s guidance on canine milk replacers describe these limited uses.

Weakness or failure to suckle can signal a problem beyond hunger. Contact a veterinarian promptly so the puppy’s condition and cause can be assessed and an appropriate feeding route chosen. Do not treat tube feeding as a substitute for that evaluation.
Why a veterinarian must teach and guide the procedure
Tube feeding bypasses the puppy’s control over how much it takes in. The tube must be correctly selected and positioned, and the amount, formula, temperature, and pace must suit the individual puppy. VCA explains that proper equipment, training, and technique are needed to help prevent formula entering the lungs; aspiration can lead to pneumonia or death. The Royal Veterinary College’s 9 February 2026 release also describes severe consequences of incorrect placement, including aspiration pneumonia and pneumothorax, and discusses professional radiographic guidance for checking tube position in dogs and cats.

That RVC guidance concerns veterinary placement checking; it is not a home-use protocol. Online descriptions or equipment dimensions cannot replace an in-person demonstration and veterinary oversight. In particular, AAHA cites 5–8 Fr infant feeding tubes in professional guidance, but that range is not a universal recommendation for owners to choose a tube or attempt placement.
What to do before any feeding
- Contact a veterinarian. Explain that the puppy is weak, not suckling, chilled, or otherwise unwell. Ask where the puppy should be assessed and whether it needs urgent care.
- Keep a chilled puppy from being fed until it is rewarmed. Merck Veterinary Manual advises delaying tube feeding until a neonate is euthermic: hypothermia can contribute to ileus, regurgitation, and aspiration. Ask the veterinarian how to warm the puppy safely and when feeding can begin.
- Get an individual feeding plan and hands-on instruction. The veterinarian should assess the puppy and direct the equipment, formula, amount, timing, and technique. Do not estimate a dose or improvise tube placement.
- Follow the plan and product directions exactly. Stop and contact the veterinarian if feeding is not proceeding as taught or the puppy’s condition changes; do not force a feed or compensate by increasing a later amount without veterinary advice.
Choosing a feeding route
The appropriate route depends on whether the puppy can safely suckle and swallow, why it cannot feed normally, and whether a trained caregiver can follow veterinary instructions.

Formula, amounts, and feeding risks
For orphaned puppies, use a commercial canine milk replacer selected in accordance with veterinary advice and its product directions. Merck Veterinary Manual says commercial milk replacers are superior to homemade versions, and VCA describes canine milk replacer for orphaned puppies. Choosing appropriate formula does not make tube insertion safe or determine how much an individual puppy should receive.

Do not use a general volume or schedule from an online article as a tube-feeding dose. Amounts and timing depend on the puppy’s age, weight, health, and formula, and must come from its veterinary plan. Merck lists neonatal energy requirements of 133 kcal/kg/day in the first week, 155 in the second, 175–198 in the third, and 220 in the fourth; these are daily caloric requirements, not per-feed tube doses. They should not be converted into a feeding schedule without veterinary guidance.

Cold formula, feeding too quickly, or giving too much can contribute to regurgitation, aspiration, bloating, and diarrhea, according to AAHA. Tube feeding removes the puppy’s ability to regulate intake through suckling, so do not speed up a feed or add extra formula if the puppy seems hungry without asking the veterinarian.

Seek prompt veterinary advice for a puppy that is weak, unable to suckle, chilled, or otherwise unwell. If the puppy’s breathing, responsiveness, or condition worsens during or after feeding, contact a veterinarian urgently rather than attempting another feed. VCA recommends regular veterinary visits for puppies receiving orphan care; the veterinarian can monitor progress and advise when a different feeding route may be appropriate.
