Cat dandruff is a sign of skin scaling, not a diagnosis—and a few flakes do not reveal the cause. Parasites, allergies, infection, nutrition, changes in humidity, or difficulty grooming can all play a part. Gentle grooming may help with coat care, but persistent flakes or other symptoms call for a veterinarian to identify and treat the underlying problem.
Is cat dandruff just dry skin shedding?
Not necessarily. Visible flakes are often described in veterinary references as scaling or seborrhea. Merck Veterinary Manual says primary seborrhea is very rare and that most seborrheic animals have scaling secondary to another condition. Flakes alone therefore cannot tell you whether a cat has dry skin or a different skin or health problem. Merck Veterinary Manual

Why does my cat have dandruff?
Several causes can look similar. The pattern of flakes and any accompanying signs can help a veterinarian decide what to investigate, but they are not enough to diagnose the cause at home.
Parasites
Fleas, mites, ticks, and other parasites can irritate skin. One mite-related condition is called “walking dandruff” because mites move on the skin. It can spread to other animals and may affect people, so ask a veterinarian for guidance if you suspect mites or notice skin lesions in a household member. Do not apply an insecticide unless a veterinarian confirms it is appropriate: some products are poisonous to cats. Merck Veterinary Manual Cornell Feline Health Center

Nutrition or environmental changes
Diet-related concerns, including low omega-3 content, and changes in temperature or humidity may be contributing factors. That does not mean every flaky cat needs a supplement or a new food: ask a veterinarian before changing the diet or adding supplements. PetMD The Spruce Pets

- HYPOALLERGENIC FORMULA FOR SENSITIVE SKIN: Gentle shampoo made without harsh detergents, parabens, sulfates, or synthetic fragrances, reducing the risk of skin reactions during bathing for cats with dry, flaky, or reactive skin.
- SHEA BUTTER AND HONEY CONDITIONING: Shea butter and honey help moisturize and soften fur during the bath, supporting a coat that feels smoother and less dry after rinsing compared to basic cleansing-only formulas.
- PH BALANCED FOR FELINE SKIN: Formulated specifically for cats with a pH level suited to feline skin, which differs from human skin pH; using a cat-specific formula reduces the risk of skin barrier disruption during bathing.
- FRAGRANCE-FREE FOR CAT COMFORT: Contains no added fragrance, which helps reduce stress during bathing for cats sensitive to strong scents, and avoids exposing felines to artificial perfumes they may find irritating.
- GENTLE LATHER FOR MANAGEABLE BATHING: Light lather rinses clean without heavy residue, making it easier to fully remove shampoo from the coat during the rinse stage, which is often the most challenging part of bathing a cat.
Difficulty grooming
Some cats develop coat debris and scale because they cannot groom effectively. Obesity, arthritis, other musculoskeletal problems, or pain can make it hard to reach parts of the coat. If your cat has stopped grooming or cannot reach its back or other areas, look for the reason rather than relying on brushing alone. PetMD The Spruce Pets
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Seek veterinary advice if the flakes persist or worsen, or occur with itching, redness, scabs, hair loss, greasy or crusty skin, discomfort, appetite changes, or unusual behavior. Also ask for advice if another person or animal in the home develops skin lesions. Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences advises contacting a veterinarian when dandruff is more than a few flakes, the cat is itchy or acting abnormally, or someone in the household has skin lesions. How does a veterinarian find the cause?
The veterinarian will consider your cat’s history and examine the skin and coat, then choose tests based on the signs and likely causes. Depending on the case, evaluation may include blood tests, skin scrapings or hair plucks, skin cytology, culture, or fecal testing. These are possibilities—not a standard battery every cat needs. How can you control cat dandruff?
Treatment depends on the cause. A veterinarian may recommend addressing a parasite, infection, allergy, diet concern, or underlying medical condition. Topical treatments, supplements, or therapeutic diets may suit some cases, but there is no single dandruff product or routine that fits every cat.

Support coat care without masking the problem
Gentle brushing can help remove loose coat debris and support routine grooming, particularly if your cat has trouble grooming itself. Stop if brushing causes discomfort, and ask your veterinarian whether grooming difficulty could be related to pain or another health issue. Brushing does not treat parasites, allergies, infection, or systemic illness.

Avoid unsupervised remedies
- Do not use human dandruff shampoo on your cat unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to.
- Do not apply insecticides or other medication without veterinary approval; some insecticides are toxic to cats.
- Do not start supplements or change foods on the assumption that flakes prove a nutritional problem.
These measures can miss the actual cause, and the wrong product may be unsafe. A veterinarian can match treatment to the findings.
