Elephants sometimes touch, call to, investigate, or physically move toward a herd member in distress. Those actions can look compassionate, and researchers have documented behavior resembling consolation and, in rarer cases, rescue. The evidence is strongest for what elephants do: directed contact, vocal communication, investigation and protective movement. It is not proof that an elephant experiences compassion exactly as a human does, because an animal’s private motivation cannot be observed directly.
What elephants actually do when another elephant is in trouble
Several kinds of observations sit behind the popular idea that elephants show compassion. In a Thailand elephant camp, researchers compared behavior after distress events with behavior during control periods. Bystanders made more directed physical contact and vocalized more after a companion became distressed. A separate account from Kenya described elephants helping and investigating a dying matriarch and then showing interest in her body after death. In Assam, two field incidents involved adult males pushing sedated females away from teams approaching to fit GPS collars.

These examples are not interchangeable. The Thailand work used repeated behavioral comparisons and focused on reassurance-like affiliation. The Kenya account was an unusual observational case involving death. The Assam report described movement away from a perceived threat and considered both rescue and courtship explanations. Taken together, they show a flexible social response, while leaving the elephants’ subjective motives uncertain.

Distress events were compared with control periods
Plotnik and de Waal’s 2014 study in PeerJ examined Asian elephants living in a camp in Thailand. Rather than relying on a single dramatic story, the researchers recorded what happened around distress events and compared those observations with control periods. After distress, elephants directed more physical contact toward another elephant and increased their vocal communication.

Directed contact means behavior aimed at a particular individual rather than incidental contact caused by crowding or movement. Touching with the trunk, standing close, and other affiliative interactions can serve many social functions, so the study treated the pattern as evidence of affiliation rather than as a direct reading of emotion. The increase after distress made a reassurance-like interpretation plausible.
Why researchers used the word “consolation” carefully
In animal-behavior research, consolation generally refers to a bystander approaching or contacting a distressed individual after a conflict or threatening event. The behavior is notable because the bystander was not necessarily the original target of the event. It may help restore contact, reduce agitation or maintain a social bond.
The Thai elephants’ increased touching and calling resembled that pattern. Researchers also reported emotional-state matching among bystanders and affiliation around the distressed elephant. Those observations suggest that elephants attend to changes in the behavior of others. They do not establish that an elephant consciously recognizes another’s feelings in the same way a person does, or that the behavior always reduces distress.

A major complication was that initial distress responses were often directed toward an ambiguous stimulus. Observers could not always determine whether a bystander was responding to the distressed elephant or to the same object, event or sound that had triggered the distress. A trunk touch or vocalization may therefore have been aimed at the individual, the stimulus, or both.
That uncertainty matters because consolation requires a response to another individual’s state, not merely a reaction to a startling event. The researchers still described the overall behavior as similar to consolation and suggested attention to others’ emotional states, but they did not present it as proof of human-like empathy.

A Kenyan matriarch case shows a different kind of social response
Helping and investigation around death
A 2006 report in Applied Animal Behaviour Science by Iain Douglas-Hamilton, Shivani Bhalla, George Wittemyer and Fritz Vollrath described elephants attending to a dying matriarch and investigating her body after death. The observations included assistance while she was dying and sustained interest afterward, rather than a controlled test of a single behavior.
The authors reported that these actions were not restricted to close relatives. Elephants that were not immediate kin also took part in helping or investigation. That detail is important: it suggests the response may involve broader social bonds or group dynamics rather than only direct genetic interest.

Why a case report cannot establish a general rule
A field account can document behavior that would be impossible or unethical to stage experimentally. It can also reveal details that controlled observations miss, such as how multiple elephants approach a vulnerable group member over time. But one unusual episode cannot show how often similar events occur, whether every herd responds this way, or what each participant intended.
Interest in a body may reflect attachment, recognition, sensory investigation, confusion, or several processes at once. “Compassionate behavior” is a reasonable description of the outward actions reported in the case, provided it is not converted into a claim that the elephants’ feelings have been measured.
Two Assam incidents that may represent rescue—or courtship
What happened during GPS-collaring work
Arjun Kamdar and co-authors described two incidents in Assam, India, in a report first published online on 11 December 2024 and later appearing in volume 57 of Biotropica (2025). In both events, an adult male Asian elephant pushed a sedated female away from a team approaching during GPS-collar work. The movement placed the female farther from the people and their equipment.

At face value, this looks rescue-like: a male appeared to intervene when a companion was near a perceived threat. The report discusses that interpretation, including the possibility that the male’s action moved the female out of danger even though the team posed no intended harm.

The competing explanation is biologically important
Vigorous pushing also occurs during elephant courtship and mating behavior. The Assam authors therefore considered courtship a plausible alternative to rescue. A male could have been attempting to control a female’s movement or maintain proximity for reproductive reasons, with the researchers’ presence affecting the interaction incidentally.
This is not a minor caveat. Rescue behavior implies that the actor responds to a victim in a dangerous or perceived-dangerous situation, accepts some risk, performs an action with potential to help, and receives no immediate benefit. Those criteria, discussed by Kamdar and colleagues in relation to earlier scholarship, are difficult to verify in a brief field encounter. The two incidents fit some elements, but they do not rule out mating-related behavior.
What two observations can—and cannot—tell us
Two events are enough to document a behavior worth investigating. They are not enough to establish a frequency, a species-wide pattern, or a unique motivation. The report itself concludes that a single study cannot establish or dismiss rescue behavior in Asian elephants. Future observations would need to record the social relationship, reproductive context, threat cues, the male’s exposure to risk and what happened after the female was moved.
How the evidence differs across the three examples
| Evidence | Setting and animals | Observed action | What it supports | Main uncertainty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2014 Thailand study | Asian elephants in a camp; repeated distress and control observations | More directed touching and vocal communication after distress; affiliative responses among bystanders | Behavior resembling consolation and attention to others’ emotional states | Ambiguous triggers made it difficult to separate a response to the distressed elephant from a response to the same stimulus |
| 2006 Kenya report | Wild elephants around a dying and deceased matriarch | Helping while she was dying and investigating her body afterward; participation was not limited to close kin | A detailed case of broad social interest and assistance | Observational report with no control comparison or estimate of frequency |
| 2025 Assam report | Two 2021 field incidents involving adult males and sedated females during GPS-collar work | Males pushed females away from approaching teams | Rescue-like movement away from a perceived threat is plausible | Courtship and mating behavior can also involve vigorous pushing |
The comparison shows why it is misleading to rank one elephant population as “more compassionate.” The studies observed different situations, used different methods and asked different questions. A repeated increase in contact is not directly comparable to an exceptional response around a death or two movements during a collaring operation.

Does this prove that elephants feel empathy?
It depends on what “prove” means. The observations are consistent with sensitivity to another elephant’s condition. Elephants notice changes in companions, alter their own behavior, use touch and vocal signals, and sometimes intervene physically. Those capabilities are compatible with empathy in a broad, everyday sense.
Science can record the context and consequences of an action more readily than the private experience behind it. A researcher can establish that contact increased after distress, not that the actor felt sadness, imagined the other’s experience or acted from an explicitly altruistic goal. The safest conclusion is that elephants show behavior consistent with consolation, affiliation, helping or rescue-like intervention in particular circumstances.
Behavior versus inferred motivation
- Observed: who approached, touched, called, pushed, investigated or remained nearby.
- Supported interpretation: the behavior was affiliative, reassurance-like or potentially protective in that context.
- Unestablished: the elephant’s conscious emotion, intention, human-like empathy or expectation of a future reward.
Keeping those categories separate does not make the behavior less remarkable. It makes the claim more accurate and allows new evidence to improve the explanation rather than forcing every intervention into a single label.
Why elephant social life makes these responses plausible
Elephants live in long-term social networks in which individuals recognize one another, coordinate movement and respond to changes in group behavior. Touch and vocal communication are central to maintaining those relationships. When one elephant becomes agitated, injured, immobilized or unresponsive, companions have many opportunities to detect the change and adjust their behavior.
That social background provides a plausible foundation for consolation-like actions, but it is not itself evidence that every response is compassionate. The same social tools can serve practical purposes: locating a separated companion, assessing a threat, managing spacing, protecting a calf, competing for access or initiating courtship. Context determines which explanation fits best.

How researchers could test the compassion question more rigorously
Separate the individual from the trigger
Studies should record whether bystanders orient first toward the distressed elephant, toward the object or event that caused the distress, or toward both. Video from multiple angles, synchronized behavioral coding and carefully chosen control events could reduce the ambiguity identified in the Thailand study.
Measure what happens after contact
If an interaction is described as consolation, researchers can examine whether the distressed elephant’s behavior changes afterward: for example, whether agitation, vocal rate or avoidance decreases compared with matched situations without bystander contact. Such measures would not reveal subjective feelings, but they would test whether the interaction has a reassuring effect.
Account for relationships and reproductive context
Kinship, friendship, dominance, age, sex and mating status can all influence intervention. In cases like Assam, recording reproductive behavior and the male’s relationship with the female is essential before labeling pushing as rescue. Researchers also need to document whether the actor faced any real or perceived risk and whether the action produced an immediate benefit.

Rescue-like episodes are difficult to predict and may be uncommon. A larger collection of standardized field reports would show whether the Assam incidents are isolated, part of a recurring pattern, or concentrated in particular social settings. Until then, the number of published cases should not be treated as a population statistic.
What to say when someone asks, “Do elephants help each other?”
Yes, elephants have been observed helping, investigating and affiliating with herd members in distress. In Thailand, a comparative study found more directed touch and vocal communication after distress events. In Kenya, a field report documented assistance toward a dying matriarch and attention to her body after death. In Assam, adult males pushed sedated females away from approaching collaring teams, although courtship remains an alternative explanation.
The careful answer to “Can elephants feel empathy?” is that their behavior is compatible with empathy or compassion, but the studies do not directly measure an elephant’s subjective feelings. The evidence supports respect for the complexity of elephant social behavior, not a claim that every dramatic act has one proven motive.
Bottom line
Elephants show striking, socially directed responses when companions are distressed, dying or apparently threatened. The best-supported conclusion is behavioral: elephants can affiliate, communicate, investigate and sometimes intervene in ways that resemble consolation or rescue. Whether those actions arise from an experience equivalent to human compassion remains unresolved, and each case must be interpreted in its own context.
