Neither rabbit milk replacer nor kitten milk replacer has been shown to be categorically safer for orphaned kits. Merck Veterinary Manual lists both commercial rabbit-rearing formula and kitten milk among possible hand-rearing options. A rabbit-specific formula is the closer species match, but the available evidence does not prove that it produces better safety or survival outcomes for orphaned newborns.
Before choosing a formula, make sure the kits are truly orphaned: does usually nurse briefly once or twice a day, so an empty nest at other times is not proof that the mother has abandoned them. For wild kits, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator rather than attempting to raise them at home.
Which is safer for orphaned kits?
The evidence does not support a definitive safety winner. Merck Veterinary Manual lists kitten milk and commercially available rabbit-rearing formulas as options for hand-rearing, while House Rabbit Society also recommends kitten milk replacer (KMR) in its care guidance. Neither source establishes that one is safer in a controlled comparison of orphaned newborn kits.
If both are available and a rabbit-savvy veterinarian recommends a replacer, a rabbit-specific formula is the more directly species-matched category. That is a reason to consider it, not proof of superior outcomes. The formula’s composition, the kit’s age and condition, and safe administration all matter.

- Feeding Baby and Orphaned Rabbits: Our baby rabbit formula is specially formulated to nourish orphaned baby rabbits and Eastern Cottontail rabbits or to supplement when the mother's milk is insufficient. Packed with essential nutrients, it supports healthy development from the neonatal stage through weaning, ensuring complete and balanced nutrition for early growth
- Rabbit Formula Milk Replacer: Rabbit milk replacement is rich in easily digestible protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals, very close to breast milk, to enhance immunity and digestive function
- Maintain Health and Vitality: Compared with other kitten milk replacer and puppy formula, our bunny milk replacer is more in line with the physique of newborns to 6-week-old rabbits, with high energy to support intestinal digestion, helps normal bowel movements, and produces good growth rate and weight gain
- Wildlife Rehabilitator's Choice: Our rabbit milk formula is endorsed by wildlife experts and pet owners as the preferred solution for supplemental feeding of rescued and orphaned newborn rabbits and underweight bunnies
- Effortless Dissolution: The baby rabbit formula milk dissolves smoothly without clumping, making it easy for newborn rabbits to accept. Use the included small syringe for precise feeding based on weight, with feedings required only twice daily (morning and evening)
How do the formula options compare?
| Option | What guidance supports | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial rabbit-rearing formula | Merck lists commercially available rabbit-rearing formulas for hand-rearing kits. A rabbit-specific product is the closer species match by category. | No source here identifies a particular current brand or proves it safer in a controlled trial of orphaned newborn kits. |
| Kitten milk replacer (KMR) | Merck lists kitten milk among possible options, and House Rabbit Society recommends KMR in its care guidance. | The sources do not establish that every KMR formulation is equivalent to rabbit milk or suitable under one universal protocol for every age and condition. |
| Goat milk or goat milk replacer | Merck lists goat milk replacer; House Rabbit Society describes regular goat milk as an option in its guide. | This does not establish goat milk as an ideal long-term formula or make ordinary milk nutritionally identical to rabbit milk. |
When a professional helps you assess a product, ask about its species-specific nutrient composition—especially lactose, fat, and protein—and whether the supporting evidence applies to orphaned newborn kits rather than rabbits at another age. The available comparison study, published in 2020, concerns early-weaning rabbits; its retrieved record does not establish a safety or survival winner for orphaned newborns.
Why rabbit milk composition matters
Rabbit milk is unusually rich in fat and protein and low in lactose. Merck’s 2025 Hand-Rearing Zoo Mammals table gives rabbits and bears these ranges: 30–40% dry matter, 25–45% protein, 40–50% fat, and 5–10% carbohydrates/lactose. Merck also warns that high-lactose milk can cause severe gastrointestinal problems and diarrhea in rabbits.

- Premium Quality Ingredients: Formulated with 100% human-grade ingredients to ensure the highest nutritional standards for baby rabbits
- Australian Manufacturing: Made in Australia with strict quality control standards and specialized formulation expertise
- Convenient Measuring Tool: Includes a scoop for easy and accurate measuring to ensure proper feeding portions
- Nutritionally Balanced Formula: Specially formulated to match the composition of natural rabbit milk with additional protein and fat to support healthy growth and development
- Gut Health Support: Contains milk oil with beneficial fatty acids that are essential for maintaining good digestive health in growing kits
Those figures explain why species match and formulation deserve attention; they do not let an owner calculate a safe substitute or predict how a particular product will perform. The ranges are not a feeding recipe, and the cited guidance does not rank current commercial products by outcome.
First check whether the kits are actually orphaned
A doe’s brief, infrequent visits are normal. Merck says does generally nurse once or twice daily; House Rabbit Society describes nursing usually once in the middle of the night. Not seeing the mother at the nest during the day does not, by itself, show that the litter has been abandoned.

- For domestic rabbits: Check the kits and ask a rabbit-savvy veterinarian or experienced rabbit caretaker for guidance before starting hand-feeding. Merck notes that fostering kits to a doe with a similarly aged litter may be an alternative; kits covered with the doe’s fur are generally accepted.
- For wild rabbits: Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. House Rabbit Society advises against home-raising wild babies because more die when people attempt it.
Hand-rearing has serious risks
Merck states, “Kits can be hand-reared, but mortality is high.” It does not give a survival percentage applicable to orphaned newborn kits. Hand-rearing also carries risks that include overfeeding and pulmonary aspiration. House Rabbit Society warns that overfeeding can cause fatal intestinal disease and recommends upright feeding to reduce aspiration risk.
A small syringe or eyedropper does not make feeding safe on its own. Do not force-feed or improvise a dose: a kit’s needs depend on age, weight, and clinical condition, and an incorrect technique can cause harm.

Get an individual feeding plan rather than combining schedules
Published guidance differs. Merck’s orphan-kit article says feeding volume varies by age, ranging from 1/2 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons, and gives a 12-hour interval. House Rabbit Society provides different frequency guidance and emphasizes avoiding overfeeding. These recommendations should not be combined into a universal schedule or recipe.
