Usually, yes. Take a nursery-grown plant out of its plastic container before putting the root ball in garden soil. The important exception is a genuinely all-natural starter pot used for some vegetable transplants; even then, remove the bottom and any rim above the soil. Trees and shrubs are a stricter case: extension guidance recommends removing biodegradable containers as well as plastic ones. A fabric grow bag should also come off.
The right method depends on the container material, the type of plant and whether roots are circling tightly. Use the guide below to avoid broken stems, dried-out root balls and roots that remain trapped in a pot-shaped mass.

| Container | Plant or situation | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic nursery pot | Vegetable, flower, houseplant, tree or shrub | Remove the entire pot before planting or repotting. |
| Compressed peat, manure or coconut-coir pot | Vegetable transplant | You may plant the pot with the transplant if it is all-natural; remove the base and every rim section that could remain above soil. |
| Biodegradable, paper-mâché or “plantable” pot | Tree or shrub | Remove it. Iowa State and Minnesota guidance does not treat these containers as an exception for woody plants. |
| Fabric grow bag | Any tree or shrub | Remove it before backfilling; it is not considered plantable or compostable in the Iowa State guidance. |
| Decorative outer cachepot | Houseplant kept in a removable nursery insert | Separate the inner growing pot from the outer container. The plant is still growing in the inner pot, which must be removed when you repot. |
“Biodegradable” is a marketing description, not a universal planting instruction. Recommendations vary by material and plant category, so identify both before deciding to leave a container in the ground.

Removing a plastic nursery pot without damaging the plant
Plastic sides can hold roots in a tight cylinder and can block outward growth after planting. University of Maryland Extension describes either sliding the plant out or cutting the container down its sides; Iowa State says all plastic containers must be removed before backfilling around a tree or shrub.

- Moisten the root ball when appropriate. For vegetable transplants, water the containers several hours before planting. A damp root ball is less likely to crumble when it leaves the pot. Do not handle a saturated, muddy root mass roughly.
- Support the root ball. Tip a small pot on its side and hold the plant by the root ball or the leaves’ base, never by a thin stem. For a woody plant, lift by the container or root ball, not the trunk; this is the handling method advised by Maryland Extension.
- Release the sides. Squeeze a flexible pot, tap its sides and slide the root ball out. If roots or soil catch on the rim, run a finger around the inside edge rather than pulling harder on the stem.
- Cut a stubborn container. If the root ball will not release, cut down opposite sides of the plastic with a utility knife or sturdy snips, keeping the blade away from the roots. Cutting is an escape method, not a required step for every transplant.
- Check the result. The root ball should be free of plastic before it goes into the planting hole. Pick out any loose plastic fragments so they are not buried with the roots.
When a natural starter pot can stay on a vegetable transplant
University of Maryland Extension allows a narrow exception for certain all-natural compressed pots made from peat, dehydrated manure or coconut coir when planting vegetable transplants. These materials are intended to break down in consistently moist soil, but the pot must not form a dry collar around the plant.
- Confirm that the container is made entirely from a natural material. A label that merely says “biodegradable” does not establish that it is suitable to leave on a particular plant.
- Remove the entire bottom. Roots need an open path into the surrounding soil, and a solid base can delay that contact.
- Peel or cut away any rim that would sit above the soil line. Maryland Extension explains that an exposed rim can wick moisture away from the transplant’s root zone and cause desiccation; its guidance is summarized in Planting Vegetable Transplants.
- Set the remaining pot below the soil surface and firm soil around it so the sides stay evenly moist. Water thoroughly after planting.
This exception is for the vegetable-transplant situation described by Maryland Extension. It should not be generalized to every fiber pot, every “plantable” label or every species.
Trees and shrubs: remove even biodegradable containers
Woody plants stay in the ground for years, so a container that seems harmless at planting can continue to constrain roots or dry the root ball. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach instructs gardeners to remove all plastic containers before backfilling and also advises removing purportedly plantable paper-mâché or biodegradable containers. The University of Minnesota likewise recommends removing all containers, including biodegradable ones, when planting trees and shrubs.

Inspect roots after the container comes off
Removing the pot gives you a chance to see whether roots are loose and spreading or circling tightly around the outside of the root ball. Do not cut healthy roots automatically; intervene when the plant is genuinely pot-bound.
Loose or only lightly circling roots
For a slightly pot-bound tree or shrub, tease the outer roots apart with your fingers so they point into the surrounding soil. Work around the root ball rather than tearing deeply through its center. Maryland Extension’s tree and shrub planting guidance uses this approach for modest circling.
Tightly bound woody roots
If roots form a dense, woody cylinder that will not loosen, Maryland Extension recommends four evenly spaced cuts about 1 inch deep down the sides of the root ball with a utility knife. Make the cuts vertically and evenly; this is conditional treatment for a tightly bound root mass, not a routine step for every plant.

Vegetable and small flowering transplants
Handle their smaller root balls gently. Break apart only loose outer roots that are visibly circling. If the root mass falls apart easily, place it in the hole promptly and water so roots do not dry while exposed.

Planting a container-grown plant in the ground
- Prepare the site first. Dig the hole before removing the container when weather is hot or windy. The hole should accommodate the root ball without forcing roots to bend sharply.
- Water at the right time. For vegetable transplants, Maryland Extension recommends watering several hours before planting. For any plant, avoid leaving an exposed root ball in direct sun or wind while you work.
- Remove the container using the method above. Keep the root ball supported and set the empty pot aside for reuse or recycling where accepted.
- Correct circling roots only if needed. Tease lightly circling roots; reserve the four 1-inch cuts for a tightly bound tree or shrub root ball.
- Set the plant at the correct depth. Keep the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil unless species-specific instructions say otherwise. For trees and shrubs, keep the root flare visible rather than burying the trunk base.
- Backfill with the excavated soil. Work it around the root ball without packing it into a hard layer. Iowa State’s sequence places removal of containers before backfilling.
- Water to settle the soil. Apply water slowly so air pockets close and the entire root zone is moist. Add more soil if settling leaves the root ball exposed, but do not mound soil against a tree trunk.
- Monitor establishment. Check moisture frequently during the first weeks, because a newly freed root ball can dry faster than it did in a nursery container.
Repotting a houseplant into a larger container
When the goal is a larger indoor pot rather than garden planting, the same basic rule applies: the plant must leave its old growing container. University of Georgia Extension’s article Repotting Container Plants for Long-Term Health, published August 18, 2026, advises supporting the root ball as you slide the plant out, checking for root binding and loosening or pruning circling roots as needed.
- Water lightly if the mix is bone-dry, then let excess water drain.
- Support the soil and roots with one hand while turning or easing the old pot away with the other.
- Inspect the outer roots. Loosen compacted or circling sections gently; prune only damaged or severely bound roots.
- Place the root ball in a clean pot with drainage holes, keeping the plant at its previous depth.
- Fill around it with fresh potting mix, water until it drains, and empty any saucer so the plant is not left standing in water.
Do not confuse an inner nursery pot with a decorative planter
A houseplant is often sold in a thin plastic nursery pot that sits inside a heavier ceramic, metal or decorative sleeve. The outer container is not the plant’s root container. You can lift the inner pot out for watering, but when the plant needs repotting, remove it from that inner pot and transfer the root ball to fresh mix. The sources cited here do not establish a universal rule for every decorative-pot arrangement, so inspect how water drains and where the roots are actually growing.

Leaving a plastic pot around a root ball
Problem: Roots remain confined and the plastic can create a dry boundary between the mix and native soil.
Correction: Lift the plant, remove or cut away every section of plastic and replant at the proper depth. If roots have begun circling, use the conditional loosening guidance above.

Assuming every biodegradable pot should stay
Problem: A fiber or paper container may persist, wick moisture from the root zone or restrict a long-lived woody plant.
Correction: Use the vegetable exception only for the all-natural materials and preparation described by Maryland Extension. Remove biodegradable or paper-mâché containers from trees and shrubs according to Iowa State and Minnesota guidance.
Burying a pot rim
Problem: A rim left above soil can act as a wick and pull moisture away from a vegetable transplant’s roots.
Correction: Remove the base and any exposed rim before firming soil around an approved natural vegetable pot.

Pulling on the stem or trunk
Problem: The top growth can tear away from the root ball.
Correction: Tip the container, support the root ball and cut the pot if necessary. For woody plants, lift by the container or root ball rather than the trunk.
Cutting roots when they are not bound
Problem: Unnecessary cuts remove functioning roots and add stress.
Correction: Inspect first. Tease only slight circling; make four 1-inch vertical cuts only for a tightly bound tree or shrub root ball.
The practical rule
Remove ordinary plastic pots and fabric grow bags. Treat natural-fiber pots as a limited vegetable-transplant exception: take off the bottom and any rim above soil. For trees and shrubs, remove every container type, including biodegradable and paper-mâché versions. After the pot is gone, correct genuinely circling roots, set the plant at the right depth and water the whole root zone.
