Sardines are fished in coastal waters around the world, but “sardine” is a common name for several species—not one global fishery. Examples include Pacific sardines in the northeastern Pacific, European sardines off Northwest Africa, and Australian sardines in temperate waters around Australia. A fish’s natural range does not mean commercial fishing is active throughout it.
Why there is no single sardine fishing ground
The name “sardine” can refer to different species and fisheries. Their ranges, stock boundaries, fishing rules, and catch methods vary by region. A species may occupy a broad stretch of ocean even when fishing is restricted or closed in part of that area.

That distinction also matters when tracing a can of sardines: a species’ range does not establish where a particular product was caught. Check its label for origin or catch-area information.
Where major sardine fisheries are found
Northeastern Pacific: Pacific sardines
NOAA describes Pacific sardines (Sardinops sagax caerulea) as ranging from southeastern Alaska to Baja California, Mexico. They live in nearshore and offshore coastal waters, form schools near the surface, and move seasonally. Older fish may travel between spawning areas in southern California and northern Baja California and feeding or spawning grounds off the Pacific Northwest and Canada. NOAA says round-haul nets are used to catch them. NOAA Fisheries’ Pacific sardine profile distinguishes this broad range from the status of the U.S. fishery.

In the United States, NOAA says the commercial fishery has been closed since 2015 and has not reopened; commercial fishing is prohibited because the population estimate is below the precautionary level set by managers. NOAA reports the stock as overfished based on the 2025 assessment, while the fishing rate was not subject to overfishing based on 2023 catch data. The rebuilding plan has a target date of 2035. These are U.S.-specific, date-qualified management details, not a description of every sardine fishery along the species’ range. NOAA Fisheries
Northwest Africa: European sardines
FAO material describes European sardines (Sardina pilchardus) off Northwest Africa, mainly between Cape Spartel and Cape Blanc. It identifies a Northern Zone from 35°45′N to 32°N and additional fishing zones farther south. Sardines move between some zones, a factor in defining and assessing stocks. This is geographic and stock-assessment context; the material is not evidence of current catch volumes or present-day management status. FAO’s Northwest African sardine account

Australia: Australian sardines
The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) places Australian sardines in temperate waters from Rockhampton, Queensland, to Shark Bay, Western Australia, including northern Tasmania. It describes their continental-shelf habitat at depths of 100–400 metres. For the 2025–26 season, AFMA lists an 8,100-tonne catch limit and assesses the stock as not overfished and not subject to overfishing. Those figures and status apply to that season, not indefinitely. A NOAA technical memorandum places Sardinops sardines in eastern-boundary currents of the Atlantic and Pacific and western-boundary currents of the Indo-Pacific. It names the Agulhas, Benguela, California, Kuroshio, and Peru currents, as well as waters off New Zealand and Australia. The memorandum notes that regional stocks can differ below the species level. How to interpret a sardine’s origin
- Species or common name: “Sardine” alone may not identify one species or fishery.
- Range versus catch area: A fish’s biological range is not proof that commercial fishing is allowed or active everywhere within it.
- Stock and management: Fishing status applies to specific stocks and jurisdictions, and can change over time.
- Product label: To know where a particular product was caught, look for its stated origin or catch area rather than inferring it from the species’ range.
