In the United States, nine-banded armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus) are established or regularly occurring in 17 states, with occasional reports in Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio and Virginia. That makes 21 states across the two evidence categories—not 22 equally occupied states. The “22 states and regions” wording is useful as a search prompt, but the latest nationwide study does not confirm 22 states with comparable populations. A state listing also does not mean armadillos occur in every county.
What the latest evidence actually shows
The best current nationwide assessment is DeGregorio and Deshwal’s study, published February 19, 2025. It analyzed 2,143 occurrence records and separated states with established or frequent, regular occurrence from states with only occasional reports. The study is indexed by the U.S. Geological Survey, and the underlying records are available through the USGS data release.

These categories describe the study’s method and observation records, not a guarantee that an armadillo is present in every listed county. A confirmed animal in a state can represent a dispersing individual rather than a breeding population. For that reason, the most accurate total is 17 established or regular states plus four states with occasional reports.

Where do armadillos live? A regional map in words
The nine-banded armadillo’s established US range forms a broad, connected sweep from Texas through the South and into the lower Midwest. The groupings below are convenient geographic descriptions, not official ecological boundaries.

South-central core
Texas is the historic center of the US range. Established or regular occurrence extends through Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama. Missouri, Kansas and southern Iowa now connect the traditional southern range with the expanding Midwest edge.
Southeastern range
Regular occurrence is documented in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky. Georgia and South Carolina are described as established throughout, while western North Carolina has established populations in specific counties rather than uniform statewide occupancy.
Northern and eastern expansion edge
Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa and Kansas represent the lower-Midwest portion of the established range. Nebraska, Michigan, Ohio and Virginia are the four states with occasional reports in the 2025 nationwide account. Their inclusion means armadillos have been documented there, not that each state has a continuous population.

Are armadillos moving north and east?
Yes. The documented US distribution has expanded northward and eastward from Texas. Compared with a 2014 account, the 2025 study reports that armadillos now cover Missouri, are established in southern Iowa, have expanded modestly in Kansas and Illinois, extend farther north and east in Indiana, and have moved eastward in Kentucky and Tennessee. It also reports establishment throughout Georgia and South Carolina and in western North Carolina.

The historical sequence
- 1849: The species was first recorded in Texas.
- Early 1940s: It crossed the Mississippi River.
- 1980: It appeared in western Tennessee.
- Late 2000s: It reached North Carolina.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission attributes that state’s expansion mainly to natural dispersal from Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. Land-cover change and increasingly mild winters may also have made movement and survival easier. Its 2025 range-expansion report documents the state-level evidence.
Why cold still limits the northern edge
Expansion does not mean armadillos tolerate every winter climate equally well. Indiana’s wildlife agency notes that sparse fur, limited body fat and a low body temperature leave the species vulnerable to hypothermia or starvation during severe northern winters. Burrows provide shelter during extreme cold, but prolonged freezing conditions remain a meaningful limit at the range’s northern margin. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources explains these constraints on its nine-banded armadillo page.
The 2025 distribution model indicates substantial opportunity for additional range growth, especially in the Eastern United States. That is modeled potential, not a forecast that every suitable-looking place will become occupied and not a map of confirmed sightings.
What “established,” “occasional” and “reported” mean
Established or regular occurrence
This is the strongest of the nationwide study’s two categories. It means records are frequent or consistent enough for the study to treat the species as regularly occupying the state. It still does not imply equal abundance, continuous habitat or presence in every county.

Occasional reports
An occasional-report state has credible records, but not enough evidence in that analysis to classify statewide occurrence as established. A state can move into a stronger category as additional verified records accumulate, or a cluster of reports can remain a small outlying population.
Single, unverified or misidentified sightings
One photograph, road observation or social-media post is not equivalent to a verified distribution record. State agencies may use more detailed labels—such as confirmed, credible and unconfirmed—when evaluating individual reports.
How state records can differ from a national map
North Carolina illustrates why state-level labels require local context. Through December 31, 2024, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission reviewed 1,562 reports from 84 counties. It identified established populations in eight western counties: Buncombe, Cherokee, Clay, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Swain and Transylvania. That finding supports an established population in part of the state, not a claim that all 100 North Carolina counties are occupied.
The commission classifies reports as confirmed, credible or unconfirmed and warns that misidentifications occur. Road-killed snapping turtles and opossums on trail-camera footage can be mistaken for armadillos, so a record’s photograph, location and corroborating details matter.

Indiana offers a second example. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources reports year-round presence across the southern half of the state and records as far north as Porter County. It also says more time and reports are needed to assess statewide abundance and distribution. Since the early 2000s, Indiana has logged 230 confirmed reports; nearly 90% arrived during 2017–2025. Those figures show growing detection and range use, but they are not a statewide population estimate.

Use the following process rather than treating a broad internet range map as proof of local occupancy.
- Start with the evidence category. Check whether your state is in the 17-state established/regular list or the four-state occasional-report list.
- Check the observation date. A recent agency record is more useful for current distribution than an undated historical mention.
- Look for county-level confirmation. State wildlife agencies often publish county maps or reviewed reports that reveal gaps within a statewide label.
- Separate observed range from modeled suitability. A modeled opportunity for expansion describes habitat potential, not a confirmed animal.
- Verify the animal’s identity. Ask for a clear photograph or other evidence; turtles, opossums and other animals are recurring sources of confusion in reports.
If you find an animal outside the established range, report it to your state wildlife agency with the date, exact location, photographs and whether the animal was alive, dead or captured on a camera. Do not assume that a single report proves a breeding population.

The US range discussion concerns the nine-banded armadillo, not all armadillo species. More than 20 armadillo species exist, and most are native only to Central and South America. The nine-banded species is the one that naturally expanded into the United States.

Despite a common misconception, it does not roll into a ball as its main defense. When startled, it may jump straight upward. Its foraging and burrowing can leave shallow holes in lawns and landscaped areas, especially where it searches for invertebrates.
What the range means for residents
Presence is local, not uniform
Even inside an established state, sightings may cluster along suitable soils, woodland edges, stream corridors and developed areas with accessible ground. A county with no recent report may reflect low abundance, limited survey effort or a genuine local gap.
Winter absences do not necessarily mean the species is gone
Armadillos can remain underground during cold spells. A lack of winter sightings is therefore not proof that a local population has disappeared, particularly near the northern edge.

North Carolina’s agency discusses shallow holes and landscaping damage and notes that no effective repellents are known. Its trapping seasons, relocation rules and other control directions apply to North Carolina and were current for 2025–2026; they should not be treated as nationwide instructions. Indiana law and wildlife guidance differ as well. Residents should consult their own state wildlife agency before trapping, relocating or otherwise handling an armadillo.
How to read future maps and headlines
- Ask what is being mapped: observed records, established populations, occasional reports or modeled potential.
- Check the date and source: the nationwide study was published in 2025, while state pages may summarize records through a different cutoff.
- Look for the unit of analysis: a state-level classification can conceal large county-level differences.
- Do not convert a sighting into a population claim: one animal may be a disperser, a misidentification or evidence of a small, newly forming population.
The clearest current answer is therefore layered: armadillos are established or regularly occurring across 17 states, four additional states have occasional reports, and the species continues to move north and east while severe cold constrains its northern edge.
