The clearest documented in-county choice is the Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics in Bedford Hills. Its boarding program names the species it accepts, requires a veterinary examination and species-specific screening before a stay, and explains enclosure, temperature, feeding, cleaning, and pickup procedures. Feathers, Scales & Little Tails (FSALT) advertises service across Westchester and neighboring counties, while Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital advertises exotic veterinary care and boarding but publishes fewer exotic-boarding details. Call any provider early to confirm acceptance of your exact animal, current rates, open dates, records, and emergency procedures.

Best-documented option: Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics in Bedford Hills

The Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics is at 709 Bedford Road, Bedford Hills, NY 10507, and lists 914-864-1414. Its dedicated boarding information makes it the easiest Westchester option to evaluate from published details. The center says it boards birds, small mammals, mini-pigs, reptiles, and amphibians, but acceptance is species-specific. A pet appearing on the hospital’s broader treatment list is not automatically approved for boarding.

Animals the center says it boards

  • Birds
  • Small mammals, including rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hedgehogs, and smaller rodents
  • Mini-pigs
  • Reptiles
  • Amphibians

Ask about your animal’s exact species, size, age, medical condition, temperament, and enclosure before paying a deposit. A “rabbit” or “bird” category can still involve limits based on health, behavior, housing, or staffing.

Screening must be arranged before the stay

The center describes a veterinary examination and testing within one year before boarding. It accepts testing documentation from another veterinary practice, but its own veterinarians still examine the pet. Because laboratory results may take several days, schedule the pre-boarding appointment well before travel rather than waiting until drop-off.

#1 Best Overall

  • Safe & Secure Travel for Your Small Pet: The TRIXIE Pico Transport Crate, a sturdy hard pet carrier, is ideal for transporting your guinea pig, hamster, rat, chinchilla, or other small animals to vet visits, pet stores or on fun outings
  • Top Loading Convenience: This top-loading pet carrier allows for easy access when placing your pet inside or taking them out

  • Most birds: blood tests completed during the preceding year are listed.
  • Smaller bird species: swab testing is listed.
  • Birds and several mammal and reptile groups: stool examination is listed.
  • Ferrets: current vaccinations are listed.

These are the center’s published policies, and requirements can change by species or medical history. When you call, ask which tests apply to your pet, the acceptable date range, whether outside laboratory reports must include particular values, and what happens if a result is delayed or abnormal.

Housing, climate, and monitoring

The facility reports cleaning cages twice each day, maintaining species-appropriate room temperatures, using heated tanks for reptiles and amphibians, and adding seasonal heat or air-conditioning when needed. Staff say they weigh boarders daily to monitor food intake. These are provider-reported practices, not an independent inspection or guarantee, so ask how they will document your pet’s normal weight and what threshold triggers a call to you or a veterinarian.

You may be able to use your own cage if it fits. Confirm the enclosure’s dimensions before arrival; the center also has cages and small-mammal enclosures. Reptiles and amphibians can have very different heat, humidity, ultraviolet-light, and ventilation requirements, making the home enclosure preferable in some cases. Aquatic reptiles should arrive with their own small tanks, according to the facility’s guidance. Ask who supplies bulbs, thermostats, filters, hides, and other equipment and what happens if a device fails.

Other Westchester-area possibilities

Feathers, Scales & Little Tails (FSALT)

FSALT advertises exotic-pet boarding across Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, and Ulster counties, plus parts of New Jersey and Connecticut. Its listed animal groups include small mammals, birds, and reptiles. The service says it can provide medication, physical therapy, and basic grooming, and lists 914-522-0509.

Because the service describes a regional coverage area rather than a clearly documented Westchester boarding-facility address, establish the logistics before booking. Ask where your animal would stay overnight, whether staff provide pickup and return, whether you can visit or receive updates, which species and enclosure sizes are accepted, and which veterinary records or tests are required. Also clarify how temperature, lighting, humidity, diet, and emergency veterinary care will be handled for your particular species.

Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital in Rye

Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital’s general information says it offers boarding and grooming alongside veterinary services for dogs, cats, and exotic pets, and serves Westchester and Fairfield County. Its exotic-care information mentions birds, reptiles, and small mammals. The reviewed information does not specify whether every exotic species can board there or list exotic-boarding examination, vaccination, enclosure, or feeding requirements. Call before treating it as a confirmed option for your pet and ask for the policy in writing if the stay involves complex equipment or medication.

How to compare an exotic boarding provider

Use the same questions with every provider so a low advertised rate does not hide a poor care fit. The Bedford Hills center publishes the most boarding-specific information; FSALT and Rye Harrison require more direct confirmation.

  1. Confirm species acceptance. Give the exact species and, when relevant, subspecies, adult size, age, sex, medical diagnoses, and behavior history. Ask about limits for animals that bite, vocalize, require isolation, or need injectable medication.
  2. Get the health checklist and deadline. Ask whether a physical examination is required, which blood, swab, stool, or vaccine records apply, how recent results must be, whether outside records are accepted, and how many days laboratories usually need.
  3. Match the enclosure and climate plan. Explain required temperature gradients, humidity, ultraviolet lighting, filtration, substrate, hides, perches, and ventilation. Confirm whether your home enclosure is required, allowed, or too large, and who supplies backup equipment.
  4. Write down the feeding and medication routine. Provide measured portions, preparation steps, medication doses and times, and the name and number of your veterinarian. Ask how missed doses, refusal to eat, vomiting, injury, or weight loss are escalated.
  5. Clarify monitoring and communication. Ask whether staff record daily weights, appetite, waste, temperature, and medication administration; how often updates are sent; and which person is authorized to approve treatment if you cannot be reached.
  6. Confirm the calendar and billing. Verify opening hours, appointment-only drop-off, holiday schedules, per-day billing, pickup-day charges, cancellation terms, deposits, and fees for fresh-food shopping, grooming, physical therapy, transport, or emergency care.
  7. Reserve and document the booking. Obtain the confirmed dates, enclosure dimensions, required records, contact names, and emergency instructions by email or on the boarding agreement. Keep copies with your travel documents.

  • Approved enclosure, tank, carrier, or transport container, with dimensions confirmed in advance
  • Familiar bedding or substrate, hides, perches, toys, and enrichment items
  • Enough familiar food for the entire reservation plus a small contingency amount
  • Fresh produce or a written shopping authorization if the provider will purchase it
  • Heat, light, humidity, filtration, or other equipment required by the species, if the provider instructs you to supply it
  • Medications in original labeled containers, with dosing syringes and written instructions
  • Recent veterinary records, laboratory reports, vaccination documentation, and your veterinarian’s contact information
  • Your emergency contact, travel dates, and permission limits for veterinary treatment

Do not assume a facility can substitute dog-and-cat boarding routines for exotic care. A reptile may need a controlled heat gradient and lighting cycle; a bird may need careful respiratory and sanitation management; and a small mammal may require uninterrupted hay, fiber, or medication timing.

  • “Do you board my exact species, and are there weight, age, health, or behavior restrictions?”
  • “Which examination, laboratory screening, vaccination, and record dates are required?”
  • “Can you accept my outside test results, and will your veterinarian still examine the animal?”
  • “Where will the enclosure be located, and how will you maintain temperature, humidity, lighting, and ventilation?”
  • “Can I bring my own cage or tank, and what dimensions and equipment do you accept?”
  • “How are food intake, weight, waste, and medication recorded, and when will you contact me?”
  • “What are the current daily rates, pickup-day charges, deposits, cancellation rules, and extra service fees?”
  • “Who provides emergency veterinary care, and what authorization do you need if I am unreachable?”

Timing, prices, and information that changes

Current rates, vacancies, and some exotic-boarding rules are not posted consistently by these providers. Do not infer a local average price or assume that a general boarding advertisement includes every exotic species. Request a written quote for your dates and services, including medication, fresh-food shopping, grooming, physical therapy, transportation, or emergency treatment.

The provider pages used for this guide were checked October 13, 2026. Hours, service coverage, screening rules, and availability can change, particularly around holidays and summer. Reconfirm them by phone immediately before finalizing travel plans.

Choosing among the options

For an owner who wants the most clearly documented in-county program, start with the Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics in Bedford Hills and schedule the required examination and testing early. FSALT may be useful when regional coverage, medication, physical therapy, or grooming fits your needs, but establish the overnight location and transport arrangement first. Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital may be convenient for Westchester or Fairfield County clients, yet its exotic boarding terms must be confirmed directly.
