For a U.S. search, start with the Alaskan Klee Kai Association of America (AKKAOA) breeder directory, but treat it as a list of leads—not a guarantee. AKKAOA says it does not endorse or recommend individual breeders. Use the directory to identify breeders, then independently verify health testing for both parents, observe how puppies are raised, confirm registration paperwork, and read the entire contract before paying.
If you prefer adoption, AKKAOA’s FAQ directs people to Alaskan Klee Kai National Rescue at akkrescue.com. Confirm current intake, geographic coverage, application requirements, fees and placement terms directly with the rescue; those details can change and are not established by the association’s referral.

Where should you look for an Alaskan Klee Kai puppy?
Use the AKKAOA breeder directory as a starting point
AKKAOA lists breeder members who are in good standing with AKKAOA and the United Kennel Club (UKC) and who are expected to follow both organizations’ codes of ethics. That membership context can help you find people familiar with the breed, but it is not an endorsement. The association states, “AKKAOA does not and will not make any endorsements or recommendations.” A directory listing cannot verify an individual breeder’s current practices, a particular litter’s health, or the accuracy of a sales claim.

Consider breed-specific rescue
For adoption, AKKAOA’s FAQ names Alaskan Klee Kai National Rescue. Ask the rescue whether it is currently accepting applications, where it places dogs, what information is known about each dog, and what its screening and support process involves. The association’s referral does not establish current dog availability, service area, fees or application rules.
Do not rely on anonymous sales channels
AKKAOA’s breeder guidance is explicit: “Reputable breeders don’t sell their puppies through puppy finder websites, pet stores or classified ads.” A listing on one of those channels may conceal the breeder’s identity, prevent you from seeing the parents and make it difficult to verify records. Walk away from anyone who demands payment before you can identify the seller, review documentation and read the complete contract.
How to vet a breeder before you commit
1. Request health records for the sire and dam
Ask for records tied to the registered identities of both parents, not a generic statement that the line is “健康” or “vet checked.” The American Kennel Club’s recommended evaluations for Alaskan Klee Kai include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Patella evaluation
- Cardiac evaluation
- Ophthalmologist evaluation
- Thyroid evaluation
- Factor VII DNA test
Have your veterinarian review results that are difficult to interpret, incomplete or not clearly linked to the parents. Screening a puppy once does not substitute for documented evaluations of both sire and dam. Ask which laboratory or veterinary specialist performed each test, the date, the registered name or identifier used, and whether the breeder can provide the actual report.

2. Separate registration from health assurance
Registration documents establish an animal’s recorded registry status; they do not prove sound health, temperament or responsible care. AKKAOA recommends UKC registration as breed documentation. The breed entered the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service (FSS) in October 2020. FSS is a record-keeping route for developing breeds, not full AKC recognition.
| What to verify | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| UKC registration paperwork | Whether the breeder is providing the registry documentation claimed for the puppy and parents | That the puppy passed every health evaluation or was raised well |
| AKC Foundation Stock Service paperwork | That the dog is recorded through the FSS program, which accepted the breed in October 2020 | Full AKC breed recognition or a breeder endorsement |
| Parent health reports | Whether recommended evaluations were performed and what the results were | A guarantee that an individual puppy will never develop disease |
Verify paperwork with the named registry when possible instead of relying on a logo, screenshot or verbal assurance. Keep copies of registration applications, certificates and health reports with your purchase records.
3. Inspect the puppy-raising environment
Ask where puppies are born and raised, how they are socialized, what veterinary care they receive and how the breeder decides which homes are appropriate. When feasible, speak directly with the breeder and see the puppy with its mother. If an in-person visit is impractical, request a live video call that shows the puppies, their mother and the area where they are kept; a polished photo gallery is not equivalent evidence.

4. Read every contract clause before sending money
AKKAOA advises buyers to read and understand the breeder’s entire contract. Clauses may require veterinary visits, ongoing contact, specific care standards or spay/neuter before registration paperwork is released. Ask for the document early enough to review it without pressure and obtain answers in writing.
Pay particular attention to:
- When and how registration paperwork is transferred
- Any health guarantee, exclusions, deadlines or veterinary-report requirements
- Required veterinary examinations and vaccination responsibilities
- Spay/neuter conditions and whether they affect registration
- Return-to-breeder, rehoming or transfer rules if you can no longer keep the dog
- Deposit, refund, cancellation and transport terms
- Required communication after placement
Do not pay a deposit until you have reviewed the complete agreement, confirmed the seller’s identity and resolved questions about records and the puppy’s care.
Questions to ask every breeder
Use the same questions with each breeder so that you compare evidence rather than sales style:
Recommended Free Tools
- What are the registered names and health results of the sire and dam?
- Can I see the actual patella, cardiac, eye, thyroid and Factor VII documentation?
- Where are the puppies raised, and what daily socialization do they receive?
- What veterinary care has each puppy received, and what records will I take home?
- How do you evaluate prospective homes and match puppies to them?
- May I meet or view the mother with the litter?
- Which registry paperwork is supplied, and when?
- What happens if the dog develops a health problem or I cannot keep it?
- What support and contact do you expect after placement?
Compare answers across breeders on six practical axes: verifiable parent health results, transparency about rearing and veterinary care, willingness to answer questions and assess your home, checkable registration paperwork, a complete written contract with return terms, and the breeder’s response to welfare concerns. Directory membership is useful context, but it does not replace these comparisons.

Breeder versus rescue: what to compare
These routes answer different questions. A breeder may provide a known pedigree and documented parent screening; a rescue may place an older dog whose history and needs are already partly known. Neither route should be judged by assumed speed or price, because current availability and comparable fees are not established.
| Decision factor | Breeder route | Rescue route |
|---|---|---|
| Current availability | Contact multiple directory breeders; a nearby litter may not exist | Ask Alaskan Klee Kai National Rescue what dogs and applications are currently available |
| Age and history | Usually a planned puppy placement with parent information | Ask what is known about age, behavior, health and previous homes |
| Screening and requirements | Expect the breeder to assess your suitability and provide a contract | Confirm the rescue’s application, screening and placement requirements directly |
| Records | Request parent health reports and puppy veterinary records | Ask which medical and behavioral records accompany the dog |
| Travel | A rare-breed breeder may require a long trip | Ask whether the rescue places outside its immediate area and what transport you must arrange |
| After-placement support | Review contractual contact and return obligations | Ask what follow-up, support and return provisions the rescue offers |
Red flags that should stop the process
- Anonymous or third-party-only selling: The seller operates through a puppy-finder site, pet store or classified ad and will not establish a transparent direct relationship.
- Missing parent records: The breeder cannot show documentation for the recommended sire-and-dam evaluations.
- Registration used as a health promise: UKC or AKC FSS paperwork is presented as the only evidence of health, temperament or care.
- Payment pressure: You are urged to send money before receiving and understanding the full contract.
- Blocked questions: The seller discourages questions about rearing, veterinary care, parents, records or how homes are selected.
- Unverifiable identity: Names, registry details, veterinary documents or ownership information do not match or cannot be checked.
Any one concern deserves clarification; several together are a reason to leave. A rare-breed label does not justify accepting weaker evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why careful breeding matters in this breed
The UKC breed-standard information notes that Alaskan Klee Kai was developed through miniaturization and cautions about faults that can be perpetuated in a small gene pool. That context is not a diagnosis of any individual puppy, but it explains why documented screening and thoughtful breeding decisions matter. Ask breeders how they interpret health results and make breeding choices rather than accepting “rare” as a reason to skip records.

A practical search-and-verification sequence
- Define your route and location. Decide whether you are pursuing a breeder, rescue or both, and recognize that this U.S.-oriented guidance does not establish international registry or legal rules.
- Build a short list. Start with AKKAOA’s directory, then contact several listed breeders. For rescue, contact Alaskan Klee Kai National Rescue directly.
- Collect documents before deposits. Request both parents’ health reports, registration information, puppy veterinary records and the complete contract.
- Evaluate care and communication. See the puppy with its mother where feasible, observe the raising environment and note whether the breeder answers questions candidly.
- Verify independently. Check registry paperwork with the registry and ask your veterinarian to interpret unclear health documentation.
- Compare on evidence. Use the same health, care, transparency, contract and return-policy criteria for every breeder or rescue option.
- Commit only after review. Keep copies of all records, written answers and signed terms, and make sure you understand travel and follow-up obligations.
How can I avoid being scammed?
Follow the sequence above and refuse urgency. A legitimate opportunity should leave you enough time to identify the seller, inspect records, understand the contract and decide whether the puppy’s care meets your standards. If a seller will not provide those basics, the safest choice is to stop communicating rather than trying to negotiate around missing evidence.
How can I contact Alaskan Klee Kai National Rescue?
AKKAOA’s FAQ directs prospective adopters to akkrescue.com. Use that organization’s current contact information and ask about intake status, locations served, application steps, fees, medical information and return policies before making plans.
What if I do not see a breeder near me?
AKKAOA says the breed is rare and a nearby listed breeder may not exist. Contact breeders elsewhere on the directory, assess which one prioritizes puppy welfare and plan for the travel or additional coordination that a distant placement may require. Do not switch to an anonymous classified listing simply because it is closer.
