Long Island is a year-round birding destination, not just a summer beach stop. The island lies on the Atlantic Flyway, and its beaches, salt marshes, open water, forests, grasslands, and pine barrens offer different birds as migration and weather change. The best place to start depends on the habitat you want, the season, and how much walking your group can manage.

The New York State Birding Trail is a practical framework for choosing a site. Its Long Island section launched with 20 locations across Nassau and Suffolk counties in 2022; that was a launch-era count, not a promise that the current list or site conditions are unchanged. Check the current New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) page and the individual property page before leaving, because fees, hours, closures, parking, route conditions, and accessibility can change.

Why Long Island is good for birding all year

Long Island projects into the Atlantic, placing it on a major north–south migration route. Northbound migrants commonly arrive from mid-April through early June, while many shorebirds return during summer. Fall weather can concentrate migrants along the coast, and winter brings seabirds and diving ducks that are less conspicuous in warmer months.

Habitat diversity matters as much as the calendar. A tidal marsh may produce rails, herons, egrets, and ducks; a barrier island can add shorebirds and raptors; mature woodland favors songbirds; and pitch-pine scrub supports a different set of specialists. Moving between habitats, rather than chasing a single “best” location, gives a beginner more chances to see and learn birds.

As Kathryn D’Amico said in NYSDEC’s March 2022 trail announcement, “Long Island’s coastlines and associated marshes, islands, and beaches are critical to the health of birds and people.” The release identified her then as director of the National Audubon Society’s Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center in Oyster Bay; that was a 2022 role attribution.

Where to go, site by site

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge: a high-diversity marsh choice

Jamaica Bay combines open water, islands, and marsh, creating feeding and resting areas for waterfowl, grebes, wading birds, shorebirds, gulls, and terns. Audubon’s 2016 New York birding guide lists more than 330 species for the refuge and more than 40 shorebird species recorded there. Those are published guide figures from 2016, not a live count, so use recent eBird hotspot observations to see what has been reported lately.

May and August are the guide’s stated peak months for shorebird numbers. On a first visit, allow time to scan mudflats and distant islands methodically; many birds will be small, far away, or mixed into groups. Bring a scope only if you already own one—binoculars are sufficient for getting started.

Jones Beach State Park: coast-driven migration

Jones Beach is most compelling when weather moves birds. Audubon highlights fall migration, particularly when north or northwest winds push migrants toward the coast, and also calls winter rewarding. Shorebirds can be abundant in May and August. Wind direction, visibility, and tide can change the experience within hours, so check the forecast rather than assuming a calendar date guarantees activity.

Because beach habitat is exposed, carry layers, protect equipment from sand, and choose a route that keeps you away from fenced nesting areas. Park rules, parking arrangements, and seasonal facilities should be confirmed with the current state-park information.

  • An ideal choice magnification: A 10x magnification strikes the balance between zooming in on your target and maintaining a steady image, making it an ideal choice for everyday use.
  • Equipped with Bak-4 prisms: These prisms deliver images with 3D depth and rich detail. Even under low-light conditions, you’ll still enjoy bright, sharp views.
  • Compact design: About the size of your palm and weighing only 0.6 pounds - makes it easy to carry around wherever you go. With these features, your binoculars become a reliable companion for everyday adventures rather than a tool reserved only for special occasions.
  • Wide range IPD: With an adjustable interpupillary distance ranging from 60mm to 75mm, they comfortably fit both kids and most adults. This means everyone in the family can share the excitement of discovering new sights together.
  • Your one-stop solution: these binoculars absolutely for bird watching, cruising, hiking, and traveling, but they’re not just for the outdoors—catch every thrilling moment at sporting events, concerts, plays, and more. Wherever your imagination takes you, Hontry binoculars are ready to follow.

Montauk Point State Park: winter seabirds and diving ducks

Montauk Point is the specialized choice for ocean watching. Audubon recommends winter trips for seabirds and diving ducks, while migration can also produce these groups. Examples in the guide include Brant, Common Eider, scoters, Long-tailed Duck, Red-throated Loon, Northern Gannet, Great Cormorant, and Razorbill. They are possible sightings, not a checklist for every visit.

Use the headland’s vantage carefully: winter exposure means cold, strong wind, and slippery surfaces can be the limiting factors. Keep binocular straps secure, stay on designated paths, and never approach unstable edges for a better angle.

Connetquot River State Park Preserve: inland water and forest

NYSDEC says more than 200 bird species have been observed at Connetquot River State Park Preserve. The preserve is also noted for numerous waterfowl and rare nesting birds such as Osprey. It is a useful alternative when ocean conditions are unpleasant or when your group prefers wooded and freshwater scenery.

Preserve access can be more structured than an open beach. Read the property’s current page for trail status, permitted activities, hours, and any reservation or parking requirements before setting out.

Edgewood Oak Brush Plains: pine-barrens habitat

Edgewood’s pitch-pine and scrub-barrens landscape is unlike Long Island’s marshes and beaches. NYSDEC reports that more than 100 bird species have been sighted there. The open, sandy setting can be sunny and warm even when a wooded site feels comfortable, so bring water and protect both eyes and equipment from glare.

Stay on established routes. Scrub habitat can look uniform at a glance; pause often, listen for calls, and scan the edges where open ground meets denser vegetation.

Fire Island Lighthouse Tract: barrier-island variety

The Fire Island Lighthouse Tract combines beach, forest, and marsh along the Atlantic Flyway. That mix creates opportunities for shorebirds on open sand, songbirds in cover, and raptors moving over the barrier island. It is a strong choice when you want several habitat types in one outing rather than a single specialized viewpoint.

Barrier-island logistics are season- and weather-dependent. Confirm transportation, opening status, walking distances, restroom availability, and any fee information with the current managing agency before traveling.

Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area: a low-tide marsh walk

A local Audubon guide describes Oceanside as an easily walked tidal marsh that is especially rich in summer and recommends planning around low tide. Low water can expose feeding areas and make shorebird activity easier to observe, but tide timing alone does not ensure a particular species.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Opening details can change. Verify that the area is open, identify the permitted entrance, and check whether a tide or weather-related closure affects your planned route.

Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center: trails, gardens, and programs

In Oyster Bay, the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Audubon Center lists trails and gardens open from sunrise to sunset, with visitor-center hours posted separately. Nature programs and conservation events provide a scheduled way to learn calls, field marks, or habitat management without designing the entire outing yourself.

Check the center’s current visitor page for program dates, visitor-center hours, parking instructions, and any route limitations. A program schedule is not a substitute for confirming same-day access.

When is the best time to go birding on Long Island?

Spring: mid-April through early June

NYSDEC’s 2022 announcement describes many northbound migrants arriving from mid-April through early June. Spring is a good period to look for songbirds and other migrants moving through coastal and inland cover. Weather can change quickly, so a quiet morning at a sheltered preserve may be more productive than an exposed shoreline during heavy rain.

Summer: shorebirds and marsh activity

Many shorebirds return in summer. Audubon identifies May and August as peak shorebird-number periods at Jamaica Bay and also notes abundant shorebirds at Jones Beach in those months. Summer heat and crowds make early starts valuable, particularly at open beaches and pine barrens.

Fall: use the wind to your advantage

At Jones Beach, Audubon specifically points to fall migration when north or northwest winds push migrants toward the coast. Wind is a planning variable, not just a comfort issue: it can change where birds concentrate and whether they are visible. Check the forecast the evening before and again on the morning of your trip.

Winter: look offshore

Winter is the season Audubon recommends for Montauk’s seabirds and diving ducks. Cold-weather trips reward patience, warm layers, and a stable viewing position. If surf or ice makes a route unsafe, switch to an inland preserve rather than forcing the original plan.

How to plan a Long Island birding outing

  1. Choose the habitat first. Decide whether your priority is beach, marsh, forest, grassland, or pine barrens. Then select a site whose habitat and season match that goal.
  2. Open the current NYSDEC or property page. Confirm fees, opening hours, parking, closures, route conditions, and accessibility. The state warns that not every trail site is accessible and that some have only partly accessible areas.
  3. Check weather, wind, and tide. Wind matters at coastal sites, and Oceanside’s marsh is best planned around low tide. Snow and ice can change conditions even when a trail is normally usable.
  4. Review recent observations. Search the site’s current eBird hotspot reports before leaving. Recent observations are more useful for expectations than an older printed species list.
  5. Pack the minimum useful kit. Binoculars, a field guide or identification app, water, layers, sun protection, and weatherproof footwear cover most beginner outings. NYSDEC notes that birding can require little or no equipment investment.
  6. Set a realistic route. Pick a turnaround point and leave time for slow scanning. A short, attentive walk usually teaches more than rushing through a long loop.
  7. Record what you see. Note date, location, habitat, behavior, and uncertain identifications. An app can track sightings, but a paper list works just as well.

Do you need binoculars to start birdwatching?

No. NYSDEC recommends binoculars and an app for recording sightings, while also emphasizing that trail birding can take little or no equipment investment. You can begin with unaided observation, then add binoculars for birding when distance, small field marks, or low light makes identification difficult.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you borrow or buy beginner birding binoculars, practice focusing before the trip. Keep the view wide enough to find a moving bird, then adjust focus; constantly changing magnification is less useful than a steady, familiar pair. A phone camera is optional and should never replace keeping both eyes on a bird’s behavior and surroundings.

Accessibility, fees, and conditions

There is no single access rule for the entire Long Island trail. NYSDEC directs visitors to each location’s main page for current fee and accessibility information and recommends contacting site management when needed. Some properties have accessible segments rather than fully accessible routes. Ask specifically about the surface, grade, distance to viewing areas, restrooms, parking, and seasonal barriers for your date.

Weather can alter access: snow, ice, flooding, high wind, and storm damage may close or narrow a route. Treat an “accessible” designation as route- and date-specific, not as a guarantee that every overlook or loop is usable.

Share the shore with nesting birds—and your dog

Long Island beaches are nesting habitat for Piping Plovers, Least Terns, and American Oystercatchers in spring and summer. Fences and signs mark areas where disturbance can cause adults to abandon feeding or expose chicks to danger. Keep outside posted boundaries, follow staff instructions, and give resting and feeding birds a wide berth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you bring a dog, check the property’s current leash and seasonal rules before arrival. Keep the dog under control, never allow it to enter a fenced or posted nesting zone, and do not let it chase birds along the waterline. Even a brief pursuit can separate chicks from adults. Audubon’s Long Island stewardship work focuses on reducing this disturbance so people and wildlife can share the shore.

Use the same restraint around roosting flocks, raptors, and birds that appear sick or injured. Do not feed wildlife, play recorded calls near nests, or cross sensitive vegetation for a photograph. Good fieldcraft leaves the habitat looking exactly as you found it.

How to set expectations for sightings

Species lists describe what has been recorded over time, not what will appear on your visit. Jamaica Bay’s more-than-330-species list and more-than-40 recorded shorebird species come from Audubon’s 2016 guide; Connetquot’s more-than-200 and Edgewood’s more-than-100 figures are agency descriptions of observed species. Populations, weather, water levels, management, and observer effort all change.

Use those figures to choose a habitat, then use recent local observations to decide what to look for today. A successful outing can be a new call, a behavior such as feeding or courtship, or a clearer understanding of why a marsh, beach, or pine barren supports birds—even when a hoped-for rarity does not appear.
