Put your hamster’s cage indoors in a quiet, dry room where it can rest undisturbed. Choose a spot with steady lighting and a comfortable temperature, away from drafts, damp, direct sun or heat, noisy appliances, and household sources of ultrasound.
How to choose a room and spot
Compare the rooms you could use by their usual conditions throughout the day and night—not just how they feel at one moment. The RSPCA describes a suitable home as a “comfortable, dry, clean place to live, in a quiet place where they can rest undisturbed” (RSPCA, Creating a Good Home for Hamsters).

- Quiet: Pick a calm area where the hamster can sleep without frequent disturbance. Keep the cage away from loud or vibrating appliances such as televisions and washing machines.
- Dry and sheltered: Avoid damp areas and places exposed to drafts.
- Out of direct sun and heat: Do not place the cage where sunlight falls directly on it or near a direct heat source.
- Predictable light: Avoid bright sunlight and erratic lighting. A room where lights go off at roughly the same time each night provides a more regular pattern.
- Free from high-frequency household noise: Hamsters may be affected by ultrasound that people cannot hear. The RSPCA identifies televisions, computer screens, vacuum cleaners, and running water as possible household sources.
What temperature should the room be?
PDSA recommends keeping the room at a steady 18–21°C (PDSA, Hamster care). This is a care recommendation, not a study statistic. Excessive heat can cause heatstroke, while cold can lead to torpor. If you are unsure whether a room stays within that range, a basic digital room thermometer can help you check it.
Should a hamster cage be near a window?
A window is not automatically unsuitable, but choose another position if the cage would get direct sunlight, drafts, or temperature swings. A sheltered spot away from direct sun and heat is preferable.

Check the location at different times
Before settling on a spot, consider its normal conditions during the hamster’s resting hours as well as when people are active. Check whether appliances run nearby, lights switch on and off irregularly, or the room becomes warmer, colder, or damp at certain times. A location that stays quiet, dry, and temperature-stable is a better choice than one that is suitable only part of the day.
