Kittens typically start FVRCP at 6–8 weeks and receive repeat doses every 3–4 weeks through 16–20 weeks. A veterinarian may also recommend a dose at 6 months. In the United States, one consumer cost guide estimates $20–$70 per dose, but the total can be higher if an exam or other visit charges are added.
What does the cat distemper vaccine protect against?
Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is the disease commonly called cat distemper. It is highly contagious and can be fatal. Vaccination is a central prevention measure; Cornell’s Feline Health Center calls it “the cornerstone” of prevention.

- Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV): the cause of feline panleukopenia, or “cat distemper.”
- Feline herpesvirus 1: associated with feline viral rhinotracheitis.
- Feline calicivirus: another common feline respiratory virus.
So, when a clinic discusses a “distemper shot,” it usually means the FPV component of FVRCP, not a vaccine against canine distemper.

When do kittens get the distemper shot?
The Feline Veterinary Medical Association recommendation reported by Cornell is to begin the kitten series at 6–8 weeks, then repeat doses every 3–4 weeks until the kitten is 16–20 weeks old. The exact number of injections depends on when the series starts and the timing of each dose.
Maternal antibodies passed from the mother can protect kittens early in life, but they wane at different rates. While present, they may interfere with a vaccine response. Repeating doses through the later part of kittenhood is intended to give the vaccine a chance to take effect as those antibodies decline.

Why a 6-month dose may be considered
The 2020 AAHA/AAFP guidelines support considering revaccination against FPV, feline herpesvirus 1, and feline calicivirus at 6 months rather than waiting until 1 year. The aim is to reduce a possible susceptibility window for kittens whose maternal antibodies persisted late in the initial series. The guideline cites evidence that up to one-third of kittens may fail to respond to a final core vaccine dose given at 16 weeks; that figure is not a current prevalence survey. Ask your veterinarian whether a 6-month dose is appropriate for your kitten and vaccine product.

What if an adult cat has no vaccination record?
An adult cat with unknown or incomplete history needs a veterinarian-directed catch-up plan. Cornell says a cat older than 16 weeks with no prior vaccination or unknown status may receive one or two doses, with a second dose 3–4 weeks after the first. The veterinarian will determine the appropriate plan based on the vaccine, its label, the cat’s history, and exposure risk.

After the initial series or catch-up doses, there is not one interval that applies to every cat. Cornell’s overview describes a booster at 1 year, followed by annual boosters for intranasal vaccine or every 3 years for injectable vaccine. However, product labels and guideline recommendations can differ, and AAHA/AAFP emphasizes decisions based on product, route, and risk. Your veterinarian should set the timing for the specific vaccine used and your cat’s circumstances.
Does an indoor cat need the distemper vaccine?
Ask your veterinarian to assess vaccination based on your cat’s health, history, vaccine product, and likely exposure. Indoor status is one part of that discussion, not a substitute for an individualized plan. Because FPV is highly contagious, a veterinarian can help weigh protection against the cat’s circumstances and applicable vaccine guidance.

What are the side effects of the FVRCP shot?
Commonly reported reactions include temporary lethargy, reduced appetite, fever lasting a few days, and inflammation at the injection site. These effects are generally short-term. In a Banfield population cited by the 2020 AAHA/AAFP guidelines, adverse-reaction risk was greatest around age 1 and increased with total vaccine volume and the number of vaccines given at the same time. That finding describes the cited population; it does not predict an individual cat’s reaction.
Signs that need immediate veterinary help
Anaphylaxis is rare: the 2020 AAHA/AAFP guidelines estimate about 1–5 cases per 10,000 vaccinations. Possible signs include vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulty, facial or generalized itching, facial swelling, and collapse. Contact a veterinarian immediately for breathing trouble, swelling, collapse, or symptoms that worsen rapidly.

If a cat has had an allergic reaction before, decisions about future vaccination—including whether to use a different formulation, give premedication, or observe the cat afterward—belong with the veterinarian. Do not give medication for a suspected vaccine reaction unless a veterinarian directs you to do so.
How much does a cat distemper vaccine cost?
A U.S. consumer cost guide medically reviewed and updated September 25, 2026, estimates FVRCP at about $20–$70 per dose. This is a broad estimate, not an official national average or guaranteed price. Rates vary by location and practice, and a full-service clinic may charge an examination fee in addition to the dose.
When requesting a quote, ask whether it includes:
- The examination or office-visit fee
- The vaccine dose and administration
- Any other charges for that visit
- How many doses your cat still needs to complete the recommended series or catch-up plan
Comparing a dose price with a total visit price can prevent an incomplete cost comparison. Your cat’s remaining doses also affect the total cost of the series.
