For a new kitten, start with a tray in its calm starter room; in a multi-floor home, make a tray available on each floor.
How to choose a spot
Compare possible locations by whether the kitten can reach them easily, use them without interruption, and leave without being startled. Cats Protection recommends a quiet, private area, while International Cat Care also advises keeping trays away from busy places and disturbances.
- Keep access open. Choose a place the kitten can reach at any time. Avoid spots behind furniture, behind a door that may be shut, or beyond a barrier it cannot manage.
- Give the toilet area some distance. Keep the tray away from food and water bowls and, preferably, from the kitten’s bed or sleeping place.
- Reduce noise and interruptions. Avoid busy hallways, doorways, shared areas, and places beside washing machines or other loud appliances. Choose somewhere children and other pets are unlikely to interrupt or corner the kitten.
These recommendations come from Cats Protection’s guidance on bringing a new kitten home, International Cat Care’s kitten-care guidance, and Cats Protection’s Behaviour Guide 2025.
Where to put the first tray
Set up at least one tray in the kitten’s calm starter room, away from its food and water. Once the kitten has settled, gently show it where the tray is. Keep the route straightforward so it does not have to pass a frightening or noisy area to get there. Cats Protection describes this starter-room setup in its new-kitten guidance and home-preparation advice.

How many trays to provide
Cats Protection’s general recommendation is one tray per cat plus one extra. International Cat Care advises offering kittens more than one tray to give them a choice. Place trays in separate quiet locations rather than clustering them together. In a multi-floor home, make a tray conveniently available on each floor so the kitten does not have to travel far to reach one. See Cats Protection’s Behaviour Guide 2025 and International Cat Care’s kitten-care advice.
Locations to reconsider
| Location | Why it may not work | Better approach |
|---|---|---|
| Beside food or water bowls, or next to the bed | The toilet area is too close to the kitten’s eating or sleeping space. | Choose a separate quiet spot. |
| Hallway, corridor, busy doorway, or shared area | Foot traffic and interruptions can make it difficult to use the tray undisturbed. | Look for a calmer area the kitten can still reach freely. |
| Beside a washing machine or other noisy appliance | Sudden or ongoing noise may startle the kitten. | Move the tray away from the appliance to a quieter place. |
| A room the kitten cannot always enter | A shut door or other barrier can block access. | Keep the route open, or choose a location the kitten can reach reliably. |
If a multi-purpose room is your only option, prioritize uninterrupted access, distance from food and sleep, and the calmest position within the room. Cats Protection discusses quiet, separated locations in its cat-friendly home guidance.

Choose a tray the kitten can use
Location and tray design go together: a spot is only useful if the kitten can get into and out of the box. Cats Protection recommends a large, adult-sized tray, while very young or hand-reared kittens may need shallow sides for easier entry. Choose a tray that is accessible now and gives the kitten room as it grows; see Cats Protection’s new-kitten guidance.
If your kitten avoids the tray
- Check the route and location. Make sure the kitten can find and reach the tray at any time, without a door or barrier blocking it.
- Look for a disturbance. Consider whether appliance noise, foot traffic, another pet, a child, or an unpleasant encounter could make the spot feel unsafe.
- Try a gradual change. Move the tray toward a quieter, accessible place rather than making abrupt changes. Cats Protection advises changing the tray, litter, or location gradually.
- Contact a veterinarian when needed. A persistent or sudden change in toileting may have a medical cause. The ASPCA advises consulting a veterinarian if a cat will not use its box; see its General Cat Care guidance.
Keep the setup familiar and clean
If possible, start with the litter the kitten already knows and make changes gradually. Cats Protection suggests at least 3 cm of litter and removing waste daily. It recommends cleaning the tray weekly with water and cat-safe disinfectant, avoiding phenol-based disinfectants. These steps support a usable tray, but they do not make a noisy or hard-to-reach location suitable. See Cats Protection’s new-kitten guidance.
