It first gives a general instruction to bring two of every kind, then specifies different counts for clean and unclean animals and for birds.
Which animal did Noah not take?
The biblical text does not identify a missing animal. “Fish” and “unicorn” may appear as guesses or folklore answers, but neither is named in Genesis as an animal Noah omitted.
Genesis 6:19–20 gives the broad instruction to bring two of every kind of living thing into the Ark. Genesis 7:2–3 then gives more specific instructions about clean and unclean animals and birds. These passages describe who was to enter and in what numbers; they do not provide a modern species-by-species inventory.
How many animals were taken?
The counts differ by category in the instructions in Genesis 7. The Vatican English text renders Genesis 7:2 as “seven pairs” of clean animals and “a pair” of animals that are not clean, and Genesis 7:3 also specifies seven pairs of birds. Always identify the translation when quoting, because wording and count renderings vary.

| Genesis 6:19–20 | Two of every kind of living thing are to be brought into the Ark. (Vatican English text) |

| Unclean animals | One pair in the Vatican English rendering of Genesis 7:2. |
| Birds | Seven pairs in the Vatican English rendering of Genesis 7:3. |
Why does Genesis also say “two and two”?
Genesis 7:8–9 describes clean animals, unclean animals, birds, and ground-creeping creatures entering the Ark “two and two.” Read alongside the more specific instructions in Genesis 7:2–3, this can describe paired entry without erasing the different counts previously given.
The USCCB commentary notes differences between narrative strands in the Flood account. That is a scholarly explanation of the text, not the only way religious readers interpret it.
Why are there extra clean animals?
Genesis 8:20 says Noah offered clean animals and birds after the Flood. The USCCB note explains that, in one strand of the narrative, the extra clean animals serve food and sacrifice. This helps account for the larger count of clean animals in that strand.
Did Noah take two of every animal?
Genesis 6:19–20 gives the general instruction of two of every kind, but Genesis 7:2–3 specifies larger counts for clean animals and birds. So “two of every animal” is a useful shorthand for the broad instruction, not a complete account of all the counts in the narrative.

FAQ
Does the Bible say Noah left fish off the Ark?
No. The cited Genesis passages do not name fish—or any other animal—as omitted. The text gives broad categories and counts instead.
Were unclean animals left off the Ark?
No. Genesis 7:2 includes unclean animals, with one pair in the Vatican English rendering. Clean animals and birds are given larger counts.

Why did Noah take more clean animals?
Genesis 8:20 describes Noah offering clean animals and birds after the Flood. The USCCB note relates the extra clean animals in one narrative strand to food and sacrifice.
Does “two and two” mean there was only one pair of each kind?
Not by itself. Genesis 7:8–9 describes animals entering in pairs; read that alongside Genesis 7:2–3, which gives more specific counts for clean animals and birds.
