Mosquitoes and venomous snakes pose deadly risks, but the comparison with sharks needs care: mosquitoes transmit malaria, while snakebites can cause fatal envenoming. These are not the same as deaths from a shark’s direct attack, and the available estimates do not support a single, like-for-like ranking of animals.
Which animals are deadlier than sharks?
The strongest figures here concern malaria transmitted by mosquitoes and deaths from snakebite envenoming. They show the scale of those public-health threats, not a direct count of animals killing people or a definitive ranking against sharks.
| Threat | What the estimate counts | Figure and period | Evidence caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mosquitoes | Deaths from malaria, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes | 569,000 estimated deaths worldwide in 2023; the World Health Organization’s 2024 World malaria report identifies 598,000 as the estimated peak for 2019–2023, in 2020. WHO, World malaria report 2024 | These are malaria deaths, not deaths attributed to individual mosquito bites. The reported annual total varies. |
| Venomous snakes | Deaths from snakebite envenoming and its complications | WHO estimates 81,000–138,000 deaths per year. WHO snakebite envenoming fact sheet | This is a broad estimate, not a precise annual count; WHO says burden data are fragmented and inaccurate. |
| Sharks | Direct attacks, a different cause category | A directly comparable figure is not established by the sources cited here. | Do not compare it as if it used the same method, period, or causal definition as the estimates above. |
So, in the sense of public-health harm associated with an animal, mosquitoes and venomous snakes are compelling examples. But the figures do not establish a comprehensive list of animals deadlier than sharks, or a numerical contest between them.
How many people do mosquitoes kill each year?
WHO estimated 569,000 malaria deaths worldwide in 2023 in its 2024 World malaria report. Malaria is transmitted by infected mosquitoes; the estimate counts deaths from the disease, not deaths directly caused by a mosquito bite. Read the WHO report.

One year should not be treated as a fixed annual toll. WHO estimated 598,000 malaria deaths in 2020, the peak across 2019–2023. That variation is a reminder to state the year whenever citing a malaria-death estimate.
How many people die from snake bites each year?
WHO estimates that snakebite envenoming causes between 81,000 and 138,000 deaths per year. Envenoming occurs when venom is injected through a bite; the estimate concerns deaths from that condition and its complications, rather than attacks in general. WHO cautions that snakebite burden data are fragmented and inaccurate, so the range should not be mistaken for a precise count. WHO’s snakebite envenoming fact sheet.

Why these figures cannot make a fair animal-death ranking
- Different causes: the malaria figure counts deaths from a mosquito-transmitted disease; the snake figure counts deaths following envenoming; shark comparisons usually concern direct attacks.
- Different time frames: the malaria figure is tied to a specific estimate year, while WHO presents snakebite deaths as an annual range.
- Different certainty: WHO flags limitations in snakebite data, and a disease estimate should not be described as a direct count of deaths caused by mosquitoes.
A meaningful comparison would need matching definitions, periods, geographic coverage, and evidence quality. The cited figures do not provide that common basis for sharks and all other animals.

Respond urgently to a suspected venomous snakebite
Seek urgent local medical care after a suspected venomous bite and follow guidance from local health authorities. WHO identifies prevention and access to antivenom as important to limiting severe outcomes. Do not rely on consumer snakebite kits or attempt amateur treatment in place of medical care.
