Which animals eat rattlesnakes? Documented examples include kingsnakes, indigo snakes, cottonmouths, red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, greater roadrunners, coyotes, bobcats, skunks, foxes and raccoons. This is not a universal ranking: a predator may take a young or exposed snake without regularly hunting adult rattlesnakes, and the answer changes with rattlesnake species, habitat and region.
Official wildlife accounts provide the clearest evidence. The National Park Service records kingsnakes eating rattlesnakes in Arizona, red-tailed hawks and golden eagles taking prairie rattlesnakes in Nebraska, and greater roadrunners eating rattlesnakes in New Mexico. Texas Parks and Wildlife lists several predators of timber rattlesnakes, while Smithsonian’s National Zoo says young eastern diamondbacks have predators but adult eastern diamondbacks have no natural predators on its account.

What does it mean to “hunt” a rattlesnake?
“Hunt” is a useful everyday word, but it can imply more specialization than the evidence supports. Some snakes, especially kingsnakes, have a well-established snake-eating diet and are documented preying on rattlesnakes. Many mammals and birds are better described as opportunistic predators: they may kill or eat a rattlesnake when they encounter one, but rattlesnakes are only one item among many possible prey.
The distinction matters because rattlesnakes differ greatly in size and defensive ability. A predator capable of taking a juvenile may not be a realistic threat to a large adult. Local prey availability, season, terrain and the particular rattlesnake species also change the odds. The 11 examples below are therefore documented cases from named regions, not a continent-wide top-11 list or a frequency ranking.

11 documented rattlesnake predators
The table is a quick comparison. The individual entries explain what each source actually establishes and where the evidence should not be generalized.
| # | Animal | Predator group | Documented rattlesnake context | Typical pattern in the cited account |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kingsnake | Snake | Rattlesnakes at Fort Bowie National Historic Site, Arizona | Snake-eating diet; not every encounter is a hunt |
| 2 | Indigo snake | Snake | Timber rattlesnakes in the Texas Parks and Wildlife account | Predation listed for a regional species account |
| 3 | Cottonmouth | Snake | Timber rattlesnakes in the same Texas account | Geographically and species-specific evidence |
| 4 | Red-tailed hawk | Bird of prey | Prairie rattlesnakes; also young eastern diamondbacks | Aerial or opportunistic predation |
| 5 | Golden eagle | Bird of prey | Prairie rattlesnakes at Scotts Bluff National Monument | Predatory bird taking a snake |
| 6 | Greater roadrunner | Ground-foraging bird | Rattlesnakes in the southwestern United States and central Mexico | Broad, opportunistic diet |
| 7 | Coyote | Mammal | Timber rattlesnakes and rattlesnakes at Chiricahua | Opportunistic mammalian predation |
| 8 | Bobcat | Mammal | Timber rattlesnakes in Texas | Regional predator listing |
| 9 | Skunk | Mammal | Timber rattlesnakes in Texas | Regional, opportunistic example |
| 10 | Fox | Mammal | Timber rattlesnakes; gray foxes and young eastern diamondbacks | More likely to involve vulnerable snakes than all adults |
| 11 | Raccoon | Mammal | Rattlesnakes as prey at Chiricahua National Monument | Generalist feeding opportunity |
1. Kingsnakes
Kingsnakes are the clearest snake-eating example in the list. The National Park Service account for Fort Bowie National Historic Site, last updated September 15, 2021, says the park’s Sonoran mountain and common kingsnakes eat rodents, lizards and frogs and “also prey on other snakes, including rattlesnakes and rat snakes.” That establishes rattlesnake predation for those kingsnake populations. It does not mean every kingsnake species, or every individual, routinely seeks adult rattlesnakes.
2. Indigo snakes
Texas Parks and Wildlife includes indigo snakes among animals that feed on timber rattlesnakes in its timber rattlesnake species account. Indigo snakes are large, powerful snake-eaters, but the cited statement is a regional predator listing rather than a measurement of how often they kill rattlesnakes. Treat it as evidence that an encounter can end in predation, not as proof that timber rattlesnakes are their principal food.
3. Cottonmouths
The same Texas Parks and Wildlife account lists cottonmouths as feeding on timber rattlesnakes. This is an example of one venomous snake consuming another, documented in the context of Crotalus horridus in Texas. Because the source is a species-and-region account, it should not be expanded into a claim that cottonmouths across their entire range commonly hunt every rattlesnake they meet.

4. Red-tailed hawks
The National Park Service prairie rattlesnake page identifies red-tailed hawks as predators at Scotts Bluff National Monument and says predatory birds can “snatch up a snake snack.” Smithsonian’s eastern diamondback account also names red-tailed hawks among predators of young snakes. Together, those sources support predation on prairie rattlesnakes and on vulnerable young eastern diamondbacks, not a blanket claim that hawks routinely defeat adult rattlesnakes.
5. Golden eagles
Golden eagles appear in the same National Park Service account as predators of prairie rattlesnakes. Their size, eyesight and ability to seize prey make a snake exposed in open terrain a plausible target. The evidence is specifically tied to prairie rattlesnakes at Scotts Bluff; it does not provide a rate of kills or establish that golden eagles are important predators of every rattlesnake species.
6. Greater roadrunners
The National Park Service greater roadrunner page for White Sands National Park describes a bird that eats carrion and “pretty much anything they can catch,” including mice, lizards, scorpions, rattlesnakes and other birds. The page gives the greater roadrunner’s range as the southwestern United States into central Mexico. Its broad diet makes rattlesnake predation an opportunity-based behavior rather than evidence of specialization.

Texas Parks and Wildlife lists coyotes as predators of timber rattlesnakes, and the National Park Service Chiricahua National Monument page describes rattlesnakes as prey for coyotes. These independent regional references support coyotes as occasional rattlesnake predators. They do not show that coyotes actively search for rattlesnakes or that a coyote can safely handle every adult snake; the opportunity, size and circumstances of the encounter matter.

8. Bobcats
Bobcats are included in the Texas Parks and Wildlife list of animals that prey on timber rattlesnakes. A bobcat’s hunting repertoire already includes many small and medium-sized vertebrates, so a rattlesnake can be taken when conditions favor the cat. The source does not state how frequently this happens, which age classes are most vulnerable or whether bobcats deliberately specialize in timber rattlesnakes.
9. Skunks
Skunks also appear in the Texas timber-rattlesnake predator account. Their inclusion illustrates why “natural predator” lists should not be read as rankings: a skunk may investigate and consume a snake during a feeding opportunity, but the account supplies no comparative frequency. Local habitat, the snake’s activity and the skunk’s experience could all affect whether an encounter becomes predation.
10. Foxes
Texas Parks and Wildlife lists foxes among timber-rattlesnake predators, while Smithsonian specifically names gray foxes as predators of young eastern diamondbacks. The life-stage qualification is important. A fox taking a juvenile does not establish that foxes routinely kill large adult eastern diamondbacks. These records show that foxes can be part of rattlesnake food webs in more than one regional setting, with vulnerability likely greatest for smaller or exposed snakes.
11. Raccoons
At Chiricahua National Monument, the National Park Service describes rattlesnakes as prey for raccoons. Raccoons are adaptable generalists that investigate many foods, so this is best understood as opportunistic predation. The Chiricahua page does not give a species-by-species kill rate or say that raccoons seek out rattlesnakes. It does establish that rattlesnakes can become prey for a raccoon in that desert park ecosystem.

Why the predator list changes by rattlesnake species and age
Geography is not a footnote; it determines which predators share a habitat with a snake. The Texas Parks and Wildlife material concerns timber rattlesnakes, the Scotts Bluff account concerns prairie rattlesnakes, and the Chiricahua and White Sands pages describe animals in specific southwestern parks. A predator documented in one locality may be absent from another, or may encounter a different rattlesnake species with different behavior and body size.
Age is equally important. Smithsonian’s National Zoo says young eastern diamondbacks have predators including hogs, gray foxes, red-tailed hawks and kingsnakes, but its account says adult eastern diamondbacks have no natural predators. That contrast is why a list of animals that can eat a rattlesnake should not be turned into a claim that all 11 routinely threaten adult snakes.
There is also a difference between a specialist-style diet and opportunism. Kingsnakes are explicitly described as eating other snakes. By contrast, a January 12, 2026 UF/IFAS Extension discussion characterizes rattlesnake predation broadly: “no species targets rattlesnakes but rather takes them when the opportunity presents itself.” That article names additional possibilities such as opossums, armadillos, badgers, ringtails, feral hogs, dogs, cats, panthers, javelinas, owls, osprey, kites, falcons, shrikes, ravens, crows, turkeys, racers, whipsnakes, alligators, snapping turtles and other rattlesnakes. It is a broad regional discussion, not independent confirmation that every listed animal regularly kills rattlesnakes throughout North America.
Do rattlesnakes have defenses against predators?
Rattlesnakes are venomous ambush predators, and their warning system can deter an animal before a fight starts. The Chiricahua National Monument page notes that a rattlesnake can vibrate its rattle at about 20 to 100 rattles per second. Sound, camouflage, a defensive coil and a rapid strike all raise the cost of attack. Those defenses help explain why many predators take young, surprised or otherwise vulnerable snakes rather than routinely attacking large adults.

A rattle is not a guarantee of safety. Predators vary in hearing, experience and tactics, and a snake may be encountered while moving, basking or sheltering where it cannot easily retreat. The available sources do not provide a universal success rate for predator attacks, so claims that one animal is the “best” rattlesnake killer would go beyond the evidence.
Are predators the main danger to rattlesnakes?
Predation is only one source of mortality. Smithsonian’s eastern diamondback page says the snakeskin trade could account for up to 20,000 eastern diamondback deaths per year within the species’ range. The page does not state a publication year, and that figure is presented as a possible scale of human-caused loss, not as an annual count for every year or every rattlesnake species. It provides useful context: a natural-predator list should not obscure other pressures on rattlesnake populations.
What should you do if you find a rattlesnake?
Do not approach the snake to test whether one of these predators would attack it. The National Park Service at Chiricahua advises people to keep a safe distance and not handle a rattlesnake, even after it appears dead. Its guidance emphasizes that your behavior determines how an encounter goes. Give the animal room to leave, keep children and pets away, and contact local wildlife authorities if a snake is in a place where people cannot safely avoid it.

If a bite occurs, seek medical treatment as soon as possible. Do not try to capture or kill the snake for identification; a description or photograph taken from a safe distance is safer for everyone. The ecological fact that coyotes, birds, mammals or other snakes may eat rattlesnakes is not a reason to provoke, relocate or handle one.
