Which Blue Birds Live in Colorado? A Field Guide to Bluebirds, Jays and Grosbeaks

Colorado’s true bluebirds are Mountain, Western and the localized Eastern Bluebird. Use plumage, bill shape, crest, posture and geography to separate them from Colorado’s blue jays and checklist-listed Blue Grosbeak.

Colorado has three true bluebirds—Mountain, Western and, in a very limited way, Eastern Bluebird. The state also has other birds that look blue at a glance, notably Steller’s Jay, Blue Jay and Blue Grosbeak. The fastest identification shortcut is pattern: an all-blue, slim bird with a thin bill is usually a Mountain Bluebird; blue plumage with a rust-colored chest or shoulders points to a Western Bluebird; a crest and dark head indicate a jay rather than a bluebird.

What counts as a “blue bird” in Colorado?

“Blue bird” is a visual description, not a taxonomic group. The three North American bluebirds belong to the genus Sialia and are the true bluebirds discussed here. Jays and grosbeaks are different kinds of birds that can show extensive blue plumage.

That distinction matters in the field. Bluebirds are relatively small and slim, with a thin, pointed bill and no crest. Jays are larger, heavier-looking and crested. Plumage can also vary with sex, age, light and wear, so identify a bird by several marks rather than by color alone.

The Colorado Bird Records Committee’s official state list contained 522 documented species as of October 12, 2026. That number covers every bird on the state list, not 522 blue-colored species. The species below are the bluebirds and conspicuously blue examples supported by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the state checklist.

The three true Colorado bluebirds

Mountain Bluebird (Sialia currucoides)

Mountain Bluebirds are the classic all-blue birds of Colorado’s high country. CPW describes both sexes as blue, although females are grayer and show white, scallop-like markings on the wings. A male has a dark-blue head and wings with sky-blue underparts.

The bill is a useful structural clue: it is longer and thinner than the bill of a Western Bluebird. In good light, the male’s clean blue body and lack of a rust-colored chest are often enough to separate it from its western relative. Females and immature birds can look muted, so check the bill and overall shape as well as color.

In Colorado, Mountain Bluebirds occupy mainly the western two-thirds of the state during summer. CPW places them from open forests around 5,000 feet into subalpine and alpine country. Some birds remain year-round in warmer south-central areas and along parts of the western border. Broadly, Colorado sightings are most expected from early May through summer; that is seasonal guidance, not a guarantee that a bird will be present on a particular day.

Western Bluebird (Sialia mexicana)

Western Bluebirds are fairly common in Colorado but less common than Mountain Bluebirds, according to CPW. The male has a dark purplish-blue throat and rust-colored shoulders and chest. That rust-and-blue combination is the key visual difference from the mostly all-blue Mountain Bluebird.

Females have blue wings, a gray-brown head and back, and a light rust-colored chest. A Western Bluebird may also sit with a noticeably hunched posture, another clue CPW highlights. Because females can be subdued, look for the warm chest color, blue in the wings and the bird’s compact, hunched silhouette together.

CPW gives the species a year-round Colorado range in the southwest, within a broader distribution extending from northern California across to southern Utah and into Mexico. The Colorado portion is therefore most relevant in the state’s southwest and near the western border. Local abundance and exact locations can change with season and conditions.

Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis)

Eastern Bluebird is a Colorado bird, but not a widespread one. CPW says it is typically found only at the state’s extreme northeastern tip. Individual birds have nevertheless been recorded farther west, including as high as Rocky Mountain National Park.

Do not use a single sighting in the mountains to infer a regular statewide population. Treat an Eastern Bluebird in central or western Colorado as an unusual observation and verify the identification with several photographs or field marks.

The species nests in cavities and has adapted to nest boxes, a fact that helps explain why it can turn up where suitable boxes are available. Its restricted Colorado distribution is the main geographic clue: in the northeast, an otherwise typical bluebird deserves consideration as an Eastern Bluebird; elsewhere, Mountain or Western Bluebird is generally the more plausible starting point.

Other Colorado birds that look blue

Steller’s Jay (Cyanocitta stelleri)

Steller’s Jay is a large, crested jay rather than a bluebird. Cornell Lab describes a charcoal-black head and a blue body. The Rocky Mountain form has white streaks on the crest, a valuable regional field mark.

Size and head shape usually solve the identification quickly. A prominent pointed crest, dark head and heavier build do not fit a Mountain, Western or Eastern Bluebird. If the crest is raised, examine the bird as a jay even when the body appears vividly blue.

Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata)

Blue Jay is blue above and pale below, with a prominent crest, barred wings and tail, a white wingbar and a bold black necklace. Those high-contrast markings separate it from the cleaner blue-and-rust patterns of Colorado’s true bluebirds.

Blue Jay and Steller’s Jay can both look large at a distance. The head pattern helps: Steller’s Jay has a charcoal-black head that flows into its blue body, while Blue Jay shows a pale underside, strong white and black wing patterning and the black necklace across the throat.

Blue Grosbeak (Passerina caerulea)

Blue Grosbeak appears on Colorado’s official state checklist, so it belongs on a list of blue-looking Colorado birds. The material available for this article does not establish a detailed Colorado range, season or identification profile for the species. Consider it a checklist-confirmed example, not a bird for which a statewide location claim can be made here.

Quick comparison: bluebirds versus blue jays

Species Body and head shape Color pattern Best field marks Colorado distribution or timing documented by the sources
Mountain Bluebird Small, slim bluebird; no crest; longer, thinner bill Male dark-blue head and wings with sky-blue underparts; females grayer with white scalloped wing markings Mostly uniform blue, thin bill, no rust-colored chest Mainly western two-thirds in summer, from open forests around 5,000 feet to subalpine and alpine areas; some year-round birds in warmer south-central and western-border areas; typically early May through summer
Western Bluebird Compact bluebird; no crest; often hunched when perched Male dark purplish-blue throat with rust shoulders and chest; female blue wings, gray-brown head and back, light rust chest Rust on throat, shoulders or chest paired with blue wings Fairly common but less common than Mountain Bluebird; year-round range includes southwest Colorado
Eastern Bluebird Bluebird shape; no crest Bluebird plumage; sex and age can make tones less vivid Geography is critical because Colorado records are concentrated in the northeast Typically extreme northeastern Colorado; individuals have occurred farther west and as high as Rocky Mountain National Park; cavity nester that uses nest boxes
Steller’s Jay Large, heavy-looking bird with a prominent crest Charcoal-black head and blue body Dark head, crest and, in the Rocky Mountain form, white streaks on the crest Colorado occurrence is supported; the supplied species material does not provide a detailed statewide range or season
Blue Jay Large crested jay Blue above, pale below, with strong black and white contrast Barred wings and tail, white wingbar and black necklace Colorado occurrence is supported; the supplied species material does not provide a detailed statewide range or season
Blue Grosbeak Grosbeak form; detailed profile not established in the supplied material Blue coloration is implied by the common name Use a current field guide for species-level confirmation Listed on Colorado’s official state checklist; detailed state range was not established here

How to identify a blue bird in the field

  1. Check the silhouette first. A small, slim, uncrested bird suggests a Sialia bluebird. A larger bird with a pointed crest suggests Steller’s Jay or Blue Jay.
  2. Look for rust. Rust-colored shoulders, throat or chest favors Western Bluebird. A clean, mostly blue appearance favors Mountain Bluebird, especially when paired with a longer, thinner bill.
  3. Inspect the head and wings. A charcoal-black head indicates Steller’s Jay. A pale underside, barred wings, white wingbar and black necklace indicate Blue Jay.
  4. Use bill shape. Mountain Bluebird’s bill is longer and thinner than Western Bluebird’s. This is particularly useful when a female or immature bird looks gray.
  5. Record the location and date. A bluebird in the high country during May or summer fits the broad Mountain Bluebird pattern. A bluebird in extreme northeastern Colorado deserves consideration as Eastern Bluebird. A bird far outside those broad patterns should be documented carefully rather than identified from color alone.
  6. Confirm with multiple marks. Female and immature plumage can be duller, and lighting can shift how blue appears. Combine pattern, structure, posture and geography before settling on a species.

Where and when Colorado bluebirds are most likely

High-elevation and western landscapes

Mountain Bluebird is the species most strongly associated in the supplied Colorado guidance with open forests around 5,000 feet and higher country extending into subalpine and alpine zones. The broad seasonal window is early May through summer. Warmer south-central locations and parts of the western border can hold birds year-round.

Southwestern Colorado

Western Bluebird has a documented year-round range that includes southwest Colorado. When a bluebird there shows a rust-colored chest or shoulders and a hunched perch posture, Western Bluebird should be high on the identification list.

Extreme northeastern Colorado

Eastern Bluebird is typically limited to the state’s extreme northeastern tip. Nest boxes and other cavities can be relevant because CPW notes the species’ cavity nesting and its adaptation to boxes. Records farther west, including Rocky Mountain National Park, are possible but unusual relative to the northeastern pattern.

Unexpected or out-of-range-looking records

Do not reject a sighting solely because the location seems atypical. CPW has documented Eastern Bluebirds west of the usual northeastern area, and individual birds can occur beyond broad seasonal expectations. Photograph the bird, note elevation and exact location, and preserve the observation details for later verification.

Using a field guide and local expertise

A Colorado bird field guide is useful when you are comparing several species, especially females and immature birds whose colors are less saturated. The value is breadth: the state checklist contains hundreds of species, while CPW and Cornell profiles provide the structural and plumage details needed for close identification. No particular book edition, price or availability is established here, so choose a current guide that covers Colorado and includes range maps and sex- and age-related plumage differences.

Colorado Field Ornithologists lists field trips and workshops among its activities. Those programs can help observers practice distinguishing bluebirds from jays in real conditions. Treat the organization as an informational learning resource, and check its current schedule before making plans.

What this list does—and does not—claim

The six examples above are representative, not an exhaustive inventory of every Colorado bird that can show blue in some plumage, season or lighting. The state’s 522-species checklist demonstrates the scale of Colorado’s avifauna, but it is not a count of blue birds. For Blue Grosbeak, the checklist confirms state occurrence while the available material does not establish a detailed range. For Steller’s Jay and Blue Jay, the visual descriptions are well supported, but a Colorado-specific seasonal map is not provided here.

For a reliable identification, prioritize several independent clues: body size, crest, bill, posture, the presence or absence of rust, wing pattern and the bird’s region and season. That method remains useful when a bird’s color is washed out by shade, glare or distance.
