Several cat breeds are described by their associations as quiet, placid or easy-going, but no breed label guarantees an individual cat’s temperament. This is a practical shortlist—not a scientific ranking—of calm-leaning cats, with the differences that matter when you’re choosing a companion: affection, activity, handling and coat care. Meet the individual cat and ask about its own habits before deciding.
How to choose a calm cat for your lifestyle
“Calm” does not necessarily mean inactive, silent or eager to be held. Breed descriptions can help you form a shortlist, but associations do not use a shared calmness score to compare breeds. Think about the kind of companionship you want, how much play you can offer, whether your home is busy, and how much grooming you are prepared to do.

- Affection or independence: Some cats enjoy being near people without wanting constant lap time or handling.
- Activity: A generally relaxed cat may still need daily play and enrichment.
- Handling and noise: Consider whether the cat is comfortable with a busy household, children and physical contact.
- Coat care: Long or dense coats can require regular brushing. Ask about the needs of the specific cat.
- Life stage: Kittens and young adults may be more energetic than mature cats of the same breed.
Calm-leaning cat breeds to consider
The descriptions below reflect breed-association profiles, not guarantees for every cat. They are grouped as options to consider, not ranked from calmest to least calm.
British Shorthair: quiet company without constant contact
The International Cat Association (TICA) describes British Shorthairs as easy-going, independent and somewhat reserved. They may prefer to sit beside you rather than on your lap or in your arms, which can suit someone who wants a companion nearby but not constant handling. TICA describes their affection as undemanding. TICA’s British Shorthair profile offers more detail.

Persian: gentle, quiet and suited to a calm home
TICA describes Persians as gentle and quiet, with a preference for calm surroundings and gentle handling. They may not be interested in boisterous games. Their long coat is a significant care consideration, so factor regular grooming into your decision. See TICA’s Persian profile.
Ragdoll: relaxed, affectionate and still playful
TICA calls Ragdolls generally calm, relaxed and loving, but that does not mean they are inactive. Kittens and young adults can be rambunctious, and many enjoy play. TICA recommends interactive play and places to scratch and rest. A wand toy is one possible way to encourage play and interaction; it is an option, not a requirement. Read TICA’s Ragdoll profile for its guidance.

Its shorter, dense coat differs from the Persian’s long coat, but should not be treated as maintenance-free. Consult TICA’s Exotic Shorthair profile and ask about the particular cat’s grooming needs.

TICA describes Selkirk Rex cats as relaxed and mellow as well as social, playful and active. The breed may suit someone looking for an easy-going cat who will still engage with the household. RagaMuffin: affectionate and docile by breed description
CFA describes RagaMuffins as docile, people-loving and affectionate. “Docile” is a general breed description, not a promise that every RagaMuffin will enjoy being picked up or held. Meet the cat and learn what kinds of contact it welcomes. CFA’s information is in its RagaMuffin breed chart.
Adult mixed-breed rescue cat: assess the individual directly
TICA encourages people to consider shelter and rescue cats, whose personalities vary. With an adult cat, you may be able to learn more directly about its observed demeanor and preferences than a breed label alone can tell you. Ask the shelter or rescue about its behavior, comfort with handling, activity and care needs. TICA discusses these cats in its breed and cat-care resources.

Breed associations use descriptive terms such as “quiet,” “placid” and “easy-going”; the sources cited here do not establish a common, validated measure for comparing calmness across breeds. There is therefore no evidence-based “calmest breed” ranking or definitive set of twelve breeds. Use these profiles to identify possibilities, then judge fit by meeting the cat and asking about its own behavior.

Calm cats still need play, exercise and enrichment. Likewise, affectionate does not automatically mean lap-loving: British Shorthairs, for example, may prefer sitting nearby to being carried. A cat’s age, personality and experience matter alongside its breed.
