You can teach your dog to settle by rewarding relaxed behavior in a quiet setting, then gradually building the time and distractions. A comfortable mat or bed can give practice a consistent place. The goal is not simply to make your dog hold a down position: look for signs of comfort, and make the exercise easier if your dog seems distressed.
What calm training should teach
Settling is a skill: your dog learns that relaxing has a positive outcome. Reward moments of genuine softening rather than waiting until your dog is overwhelmed and then demanding stillness. A dog lying down may still be tense, so consider posture and emotional state together.

Choose a quiet place and a reward your dog values. Begin when your dog is calm enough to engage; the first goal is an easy, comfortable success, not a long stay.
Teach a settle cue in small steps
- Notice and reward relaxation. When your dog begins to soften, quietly place a treat between the front feet. VCA describes relaxed changes such as shifting onto a hip or resting the chin. Reward those signs rather than requiring a rigid down-stay. VCA’s settle and calm guidance
- Add the cue once the behavior is predictable. As your dog begins to relax, say a word such as “settle.” Pairing the cue with the behavior after your dog is offering it reliably helps the word acquire meaning.
- Build duration gradually. Once your dog can relax briefly, slowly increase the time between rewards. If your dog struggles, shorten the interval and return to an easier version.
- Add distractions in small increments. Change one thing at a time, such as distance or activity in the room. When a new distraction makes settling harder, reduce the challenge and reward more frequently before progressing again.
Use a mat or bed as a settling place
A designated mat or bed can become a helpful location cue. First make the spot pleasant by rewarding your dog for going to it. Then reward relaxed behavior there, using the same gradual approach to duration and distractions. A portable mat or bed can make the cue useful in different settings, but it is a training aid—not a treatment for fear.

Why settling may be difficult
Excitement, fear, frustration, anxiety, and physical discomfort can all make it hard for a dog to settle. Rather than assuming your dog is being stubborn, consider what is happening around them and whether their wellbeing needs attention. Appropriate physical exercise and cognitive stimulation also matter. VCA discusses common reasons dogs have difficulty settling.

If a particular trigger frightens your dog, do not force close exposure. Work at a manageable level and pair the situation, where possible, with positive experiences or access to a safe place. Punishing an anxious dog can increase fear. The American Kennel Club’s anxiety-training guidance describes gradual, positive training; VCA also discusses managing fear of storms and fireworks.
Choose reward-based training
