There is no verified national dataset establishing India’s eight most-owned cat breeds. India-focused guides do, however, repeatedly discuss a mix of pedigreed cats and cats whose ancestry is unknown. The eight breeds below are a practical starting point for comparison—not a statistically ranked list. Choose for the individual cat’s needs and your home, not just its appearance.
How to read a list of popular cat breeds in India
“Popular” in breed guides usually means commonly discussed or available, not measured ownership. Catster’s India-focused article uses an eight-breed format, while other India-facing guides cover a broader range; none of the evidence here establishes a definitive national ranking. A cat’s appearance alone also cannot prove pedigree. Catster notes that many pet cats may be former street cats with uncertain heritage, alongside pedigreed cats such as Siamese and Maine Coons.

The eight breeds below are not a claim about the country’s most numerous cats. They bring together breeds named in India-focused coverage and familiar comparison options. For any pedigreed cat, ask for documentation; for any cat, assess its health, behavior and care needs as an individual.
Eight breeds to consider
| Breed | Coat and grooming | Activity and household fit | India-specific consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengal | Short coat; GCCF describes grooming needs as low. | Energetic; plan for intense play, climbing opportunities, toys, perches and interactive activities. | Enrichment is a central part of the commitment. Make sure your home and routine can support daily activity. |
| Maine Coon | Long coat; GCCF lists weekly grooming. | Consider whether you can maintain a regular grooming routine and provide a suitable indoor environment. | Long coats need more maintenance than short coats. Think about hot or humid weather and how you will keep indoor spaces comfortable. |
| Himalayan | Long coat; expect more coat care than with a short-haired cat. | Meet the individual cat before deciding; breed labels do not guarantee a particular temperament. | India-focused care guidance advises taking both long coats and flat faces into account when considering summer comfort. Ask a veterinarian about an individual cat’s needs. |
| Bombay | Grooming requirements for this breed are not stated in the cited India-focused material. | Assess the cat’s actual activity level and sociability rather than assuming these from its breed name. | Plan for a cool, ventilated indoor space when your local weather makes it necessary. |
| Persian | Long-haired cats generally require more maintenance; the cited material does not specify a Persian grooming schedule. | Choose based on the individual cat’s behavior and your capacity to manage its care. | Long coats and flat faces are factors to consider in hot weather. Seek veterinary advice about a specific cat’s comfort and health. |
| Siamese | Specific grooming requirements are not stated in the cited India-focused material. | Evaluate the individual cat’s social and activity needs; a breed description cannot predict every cat’s behavior. | Keep climate and indoor conditions in the decision, rather than treating any breed as automatically suited to India. |
| Ragdoll | Specific grooming requirements are not stated in the cited India-focused material. | Meet the cat and discuss its needs with its current caregiver before making a household match. | Provide an indoor environment that stays comfortable in your city’s heat and humidity. |
| Domestic shorthair | Short coat; India-focused guidance generally favors short-haired cats over long-haired cats for summer conditions. | These cats do not have a single pedigree-defined temperament. Judge the individual animal. | Many cats in India have uncertain heritage. Adoption can be a way to meet an individual cat without assuming a pedigree. |
What matters more than the breed label
Heat, humidity and indoor comfort
Consider the conditions in your city and whether you can provide a cool, well-ventilated indoor space, with air conditioning where needed. India-focused guidance says short-haired cats generally fare better in Indian summers than long-haired or flat-faced cats, but that is not a guarantee for any individual. Health, age and the conditions in your home matter too.
#1 Best Overall
Grooming you can keep up with
Long-haired cats generally need more coat maintenance. The GCCF profiles give a concrete contrast: weekly grooming for Maine Coons and low grooming for Bengals. For other cats, ask the breeder, rescue or veterinarian what that particular coat requires. A suitable brush or comb depends on the coat; one tool is not right for every cat.
Activity and attention
Bengals are the clearest high-enrichment example in the India-focused guidance: they need intense play, climbing opportunities, toys, perches and interactive activities. Consider whether you can reliably make time and space for those needs. For any other breed, ask about the individual cat’s established routine and behavior rather than inferring them from a general breed profile.
Rank #2
Pedigree, adoption and health records
If pedigree matters to you, request documentation and verify it rather than relying on appearance or a seller’s description. If you adopt a cat of uncertain heritage, that uncertainty does not make the animal a lesser choice; it simply means you should evaluate the cat as an individual. In either case, ask for available veterinary and health records and consult a veterinarian about care, especially if you have concerns related to heat, breathing or grooming.

A practical way to choose
- Start with your home and routine. Consider available indoor space, time for play and grooming, household members, and the temperatures and humidity your cat will experience.
- Shortlist by care needs. Rule out a high-enrichment or high-maintenance coat commitment if you cannot reliably meet it.
- Meet the cat. Observe its behavior and ask the current caregiver about its daily routine, health and social needs. A breed’s typical traits are not a promise about an individual.
- Check the records. Request veterinary documentation, and ask for verifiable pedigree documents if a breeder is claiming a purebred cat.
- Get veterinary guidance. Discuss the specific animal’s health and your local climate with a veterinarian before making a decision.
