Which Cat Breeds Live Longest? 12 Breeds and What the Evidence Shows

Burmese and Birman cats had the highest life-expectancy estimates in a 2024 UK study. Here’s how to read the figures and understand twelve commonly cited breeds without treating them as a definitive ranking.

Burmese and Birman cats had the highest estimated life expectancy at birth among the 12 breed categories in a 2024 UK veterinary study: 14.42 and 14.39 years, respectively. Those figures describe one UK population, not a promise for any individual cat or a worldwide breed ranking. The evidence does not establish a defensible top 12, so the breeds below are examples often associated with longer lives—not a ranked list. Evidence strength and lifespan estimates vary by breed.

What the lifespan numbers can—and cannot—tell you

The strongest recent comparison comes from a study of 7,936 confirmed cat deaths recorded in 2019 among cats under primary veterinary care in the UK. The study authors estimated overall life expectancy at birth at 11.74 years (95% confidence interval: 11.61–11.87). This is a population estimate, not an average lifespan guaranteed to a kitten born today.

In the study’s 12 breed categories, Burmese cats had estimated life expectancy at birth of 14.42 years (95% CI: 12.91–15.93), and Birman cats 14.39 years (95% CI: 12.87–15.91). Their estimates are nearly identical and their confidence intervals overlap; the study does not support calling one a meaningful winner. See the study authors’ 2024 UK life tables and mortality analysis.

A separate England primary-care study reported median longevity rather than life expectancy at birth. It found a median of 16.1 years for Birman cats and 14.3 years for Burmese cats. These figures come from a different cohort and method, and the reported samples were small for these breeds (12 Birman cats and 31 Burmese cats). A median age at death is not interchangeable with life expectancy at birth, so the two studies should not be combined into one ranking. The earlier study is available at O’Neill et al. (2014).

12 breeds often associated with longer lifespans

This is a set of breeds commonly included in longevity guides, not a statistically ordered top 12. A veterinarian-reviewed consumer guide updated in 2024 gives broad lifespan ranges for ten examples; those ranges are general orientation, not population-study estimates. For the two additional breeds, this article does not assign a lifespan range because the reviewed evidence does not establish one on a comparable basis. Breed-specific health considerations are not a substitute for an individual veterinary assessment.

1. Burmese

The 2024 UK study estimated life expectancy at birth at 14.42 years (95% CI: 12.91–15.93). The separate 2014 England study reported a median longevity of 14.3 years from a sample of 31 Burmese cats. The two statistics measure different things; neither predicts an individual cat’s lifespan.

2. Birman

The 2024 UK estimate was 14.39 years at birth (95% CI: 12.87–15.91). The earlier England study reported a 16.1-year median, but its Birman sample was just 12 cats. Treat the older result as a small-cohort finding, not a promise or a directly comparable ranking.

3. Siamese

The 2014 England study reported a median longevity of 14.2 years. A 2024 consumer guide lists Siamese cats among breeds commonly associated with long lives, but that guide is not an epidemiological breed ranking.

4. Persian

The earlier England study reported a median longevity of 14.1 years. This is a cohort statistic, not a general lifespan guarantee. When considering any breed, ask a veterinarian and breeder about health screening and inherited conditions.

5. Crossbred cats

The 2014 England study reported a median longevity of 14.0 years for crossbred cats. “Crossbred” is a broad category rather than one breed, and the figure should not be treated as a forecast for an individual cat.

Russian Blue appears in the same consumer guide, which offers breed lifespan ranges as broad orientation. That source does not establish a population-wide ranking or a comparable life-table estimate for the breed.

8. Ragdoll

Ragdoll is another breed in the consumer guide. Its inclusion should not be read as evidence that Ragdolls outlive breeds omitted from that guide; population-level comparisons are not established by the consumer list.

Why breed alone does not determine lifespan

The 2024 UK study associated decreased lifespan with being entire (not neutered), purebred status, and non-ideal body weight. These are associations in the study population; they do not prove that any one factor causes a particular cat’s outcome. Health, environment, veterinary care, nutrition, activity, and individual variation also matter. The consumer guide likewise identifies living conditions, health care, nutrition, and activity as factors affecting lifespan.

Breed selection also involves welfare, not just longevity. The UK Animal Welfare Committee’s 2024 opinion discusses inherited and conformation-associated risks in some cats. Review its opinion on current and emergent feline breeding practices when weighing physical traits and breeding choices. Ask a veterinarian about relevant health concerns and seek a responsible breeder who prioritizes health.

How to use breed lifespan information when choosing a cat

  • Read study figures as population estimates, not an individual forecast; check whether a source reports life expectancy at birth, median longevity, or a broad consumer range.
  • Ask about the cat in front of you: age, health history, body condition, and veterinary care are more useful for an individual outlook than a breed label alone.
  • Discuss breed-associated inherited or conformation-related concerns with a veterinarian before choosing a kitten or adult cat.
  • Favor responsible breeding and health-focused decisions over selecting a cat solely because a list suggests a longer lifespan.
