There is no single best cat brush: the right tool depends on your cat’s coat, the grooming task, and what your cat will tolerate. This guide covers eight common grooming tools—including combs and rakes, not just brushes—so you can identify them by their shape and choose a sensible starting point.

How to choose a cat brush or grooming tool

Start with three questions: Is the coat short or long? Is it fine and close-lying, or thick with a dense undercoat? Are you doing routine grooming, lifting loose hair, checking for small tangles, or dealing with a mat? Then consider how the tool feels against your cat’s skin and whether your cat accepts it. A tool that catches, hurts, or makes your cat resist is not the right tool to push harder with.

For a short, close-lying coat, a bristle brush, rubber brush, or grooming mitt may be a gentle place to start. Longer coats often benefit from a long-toothed comb that can reach into the coat; a pin brush or slicker may also suit some cats when used gently. Undercoat and dematting tools have more specialized jobs and require extra care. Veterinary guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals and grooming advice from the RSPCA both emphasize adapting grooming to the cat and coat rather than choosing one universal brush.

Eight types of cat grooming tools

1. Soft or stiff bristle brush

Bristle brushes have a pad of short bristles rather than metal pins. A stiff-bristle version can lift loose hair from short coats or coats with sparse undercoats. Softer bristles may feel gentler on sensitive areas, but can be less effective through a thick, long coat. Choose bristle firmness for your cat’s comfort and coat, not just the amount of fur collected. VCA and Zoetis Petcare discuss these distinctions.

2. Slicker brush

A slicker has many fine, closely spaced wire prongs, sometimes with protective tips. It can lift loose hair and debris, and may help with dead hair or minor tangles in a long coat. Its wires can scratch skin if pressed hard or dragged repeatedly over one spot. Use light strokes and keep the prongs from scraping the skin; a rubber-coated tip may make contact gentler. The RSPCA, Zoetis Petcare, and the Cat Fanciers’ Association describe slicker use and cautions.

3. Pin brush

A pin brush has longer, more widely spaced pins than a slicker. It is generally more useful on longer coats, where the pins can pass through more hair. Pin length should suit the coat; if the brush snags on a knot, do not pull it through. The Cat Fanciers’ Association includes pin brushes among tools for longer coats.

4. Rubber curry brush

A rubber curry brush has flexible rubber teeth or nubs. It can lift loose surface hair while providing a massage-like feel, so it may suit a cat that accepts stroking more readily than wire bristles. It is not automatically a substitute for a tool designed to reach a dense undercoat. Advice from the Cat Fanciers’ Association and vet-n-pet DIRECT describes rubber grooming brushes as a distinct option.

5. Grooming glove or mitt

A grooming mitt has rubber or silicone surfaces that catch loose hair as you stroke the cat with your hand. It can be a comfortable introduction for cats that dislike a conventional brush and is often suited to shorter or close-lying coats. A mitt does not necessarily reach through a long or dense coat. The RSPCA and Cat Fanciers’ Association discuss mitts as a grooming option.

6. Long-toothed metal grooming comb

A metal comb is not technically a brush, but it is often one of the most useful tools for medium or long coats. Its teeth can reach into the coat toward the skin, helping you find loose hair and small tangles that a surface-only brush might miss. Some combs have both wide and narrow teeth. The Cat Fanciers’ Association suggests a comb about 10–12 inches long, with combination wide and narrow teeth at least 1–1.5 inches long; these are its practical tool dimensions, not a requirement for every cat. Work gently and never yank a snag. See guidance from VCA and the Cat Fanciers’ Association.

7. Undercoat rake or deshedding tool

These tools are intended to reach loose undercoat hair beneath the topcoat. Some combs can also remove loose undercoat during heavier seasonal shedding. Tool designs vary, so match the tool to the cat’s coat and follow its directions rather than assuming that more fur removed means a better result. Zoetis Petcare describes deshedding tools as reaching undercoat hair, while VCA notes that some combs remove loose undercoat.

8. Dematting comb or rake

Dematting tools are designed to work on mats, but sharp edges and tight mats can injure skin. They are not a safe fix for every knot, especially if the mat is close to the skin, painful, or extensive. Use a specialized tool only if you have the skill to do so safely and the cat can remain calm. The RSPCA advises against scissors near mats; VCA and Zoetis Petcare advise professional help for severe mats or tools that require training.

Match the tool to coat and grooming task

Coat or task Tools to consider What to keep in mind
Short, close-lying coat; routine grooming Soft or stiff bristle brush, rubber curry brush, or grooming mitt Choose by comfort and the amount of loose hair; a mitt or rubber brush may be easier for a cat wary of wire pins.
Long or silky coat; routine grooming Long-toothed metal comb, with a pin or slicker brush if tolerated A comb can reach into the coat to find snags; avoid pulling a brush through knots.
Loose undercoat Undercoat rake or deshedding tool, if suited to the coat Use according to the tool’s instructions. Fur collected is not a measure of whether grooming is better.
Small, minor tangle Comb or suitable slicker, used gently Stop if the tool catches or the cat shows discomfort; do not yank.
Tight, painful, or extensive mat Professional groomer or veterinarian Do not try to cut a mat near the skin with scissors.

There is no universal winner. A groomer quoted by PetMD notes that cats can have combinations of coat lengths, thicknesses, and textures; another recommends trying tools to learn what an individual cat accepts. In practice, coat type narrows the options, while the cat’s response helps decide among them.

How often to groom

Long, silky, or curly coats may need daily brushing to prevent tangles and mats, while short-haired cats may need less frequent sessions, according to VCA. The RSPCA likewise says many long-haired cats need daily grooming and recommends at least weekly grooming for short-haired cats. Treat these as starting points, not a rigid schedule: coat density, shedding, tangling, and the cat’s tolerance all matter.

Use grooming tools safely

  • Introduce a new tool in short sessions and reward calm behavior. Let the cat move away; stop if it shows distress or discomfort.
  • Brush in the direction the hair grows and use gentle pressure. Avoid repeated pulling on a knot.
  • Take particular care around thin or sensitive skin. Keep slicker wires from scraping the skin, and use a dematting tool only when you can handle it safely.
  • Do not use scissors to cut mats close to the skin. VCA says mats should be removed with clippers and recommends a groomer or veterinarian for severe or extensive mats; the RSPCA also warns that scissors can injure skin.
  • If a mat is painful or severe, or the skin beneath it looks irritated, stop and contact a professional groomer or veterinarian.
