There is no single worldwide answer. The conservation challenge affecting birds most directly is the one producing the largest, best-documented local population decline in your Bird Conservation Region, state or province, watershed, or urban area. Global evidence makes habitat conversion and degradation the recurring foundation, but agriculture, climate stress, invasive species, hunting and bycatch, cats, pollution, or collisions can be the decisive pressure in a particular place. A defensible diagnosis combines local trend data with exposure, actionability, and confidence in the monitoring.
Why the answer has to be regional
Birds do not experience “the environment” as one uniform system. A grassland sparrow, a city-nesting swallow, a marsh rail, and a seabird use different habitats, migrate through different landscapes, and face different hazards. A threat that is minor for one group can be the immediate cause of decline for another.

Global assessments establish the scale of the emergency, not the ranking in your neighborhood. BirdLife International’s State of the World’s Birds 2022, published September 27, 2022, reports that nearly half of all bird species are declining and more than one in eight are at risk of extinction. It also concludes that the pressures driving those declines are well understood and are overwhelmingly caused by human actions. Those findings point to a common need for action, but they do not prove that climate change, cats, windows, or habitat loss is the top cause in every locality.

The U.S. State of the Birds 2022 summary from the National Park Service reports a loss of 2.9 billion birds in the United States and Canada since 1970. Grassland birds declined 34 percent over that period, while geese and swans increased 1,076 percent in places where wetland conservation investments improved conditions. Those contrasting trajectories show that habitat, management, and geography can change the outcome dramatically.

How to identify the leading threat in your area
Use the following process rather than choosing the most prominent headline about birds.
1. Define your region and focal birds
Start with the smallest planning unit that has reliable information: a Bird Conservation Region, state or province, watershed, county, metropolitan area, or protected-land management unit. Then identify the birds you are asking about. A regional plan for grassland birds may not explain a decline in shorebirds using a nearby estuary.
- Find the relevant Bird Conservation Region or equivalent regional planning boundary.
- Choose a habitat group or a short list of focal species: grassland, aridland, eastern or western forest, shorebird, seabird, waterbird, farmland, or urban birds.
- Note whether the birds breed locally, migrate through, winter there, or use the area year-round.
2. Gather the newest local trend evidence
Look for a bird atlas, breeding-bird survey, State of the Birds assessment, wildlife-agency report, watershed plan, or protected-area monitoring summary. Prefer sources that show a trend over several years and explain sampling methods. A single unusual season can reflect weather or observer effort rather than a population change.
Record which habitat group is declining, how large the decline is, the period measured, and whether the evidence applies to your exact geography. If a report gives only a continental trend, label it as context rather than local proof.
3. List plausible pressures at the sites birds use
Map what has changed in breeding, stopover, and wintering habitat. Check for conversion to crops or development, logging, wetland drainage, altered fire or grazing, drought, wildfire, pesticide use, invasive predators or plants, structures that cause collisions, and legal or illegal harvest. Include threats outside your town when migratory birds depend on them.
4. Score each threat on four tests
A transparent comparison prevents an intuitive but weak answer. Score each candidate threat qualitatively or numerically on these four axes:

| Test | Question to ask | Strong evidence looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Population impact | Is the pressure linked to the observed decline? | Trend data, demographic studies, or agency analysis connects the threat with fewer birds, nests, or fledglings. |
| Exposure | How many focal birds and how much of their habitat encounter it? | The affected habitat is widespread in the region or overlaps most breeding, migration, or wintering sites. |
| Actionability | Can people reduce the pressure, and can birds recover? | A practical intervention exists, has a responsible decision-maker, and can be evaluated. |
| Monitoring confidence | How certain is the diagnosis? | Repeated surveys, consistent methods, and local measurements support the conclusion. |
Lead with the threat that has the strongest overall case, not necessarily the one with the most dramatic single statistic. State uncertainty when two pressures are closely matched or when local monitoring is sparse.

5. Name one measurable response
Turn the diagnosis into an action with a testable result. Examples include restoring a defined area of native habitat, retaining a specified length of hedgerow, reducing pesticide applications, treating a measured number of invasive sites, keeping cats indoors, or retrofitting identified collision-prone windows. A measurable action makes it possible to learn whether the intervention works.
Threats that commonly rank highest
Habitat conversion and degradation
Habitat change is the recurring foundation in global syntheses because it removes places birds feed, nest, shelter, and refuel. Agricultural expansion or intensification, logging, wetland drainage, urbanization, and grassland conversion can eliminate habitat outright or simplify it until food and nesting sites are inadequate.
Habitat loss is not limited to acreage. A farm may still appear green while hedgerows, native field margins, wetlands, and insect-rich buffers disappear. A forest may remain standing while its understory is degraded. A wetland may persist on a map but lose seasonal water, shallow feeding areas, or protection from disturbance. Assess both area and ecological quality.
Where local surveys show broad declines across species that share a habitat, and land-cover data show corresponding change, habitat conversion or degradation is often the strongest starting diagnosis. The response may involve acquisition or protection, restoration, improved grazing or forestry practices, reconnecting fragments, and enforcement of existing safeguards.

Agriculture is a distinct pressure when management removes nesting cover, simplifies vegetation, drains wet areas, or reduces the insects and seeds birds rely on. Pesticide exposure can affect birds directly and can also reduce prey for insect-eating species. The relevance is highest in farmland and grassland regions where birds spend much of their life cycle.

Look for local evidence such as shrinking field-edge habitat, fewer insects, changes in crop rotations, or breeding declines concentrated in intensively managed areas. Actions can include restoring native margins and buffers, retaining hedgerows, adjusting mowing and grazing timing, reducing unnecessary pesticide use, and protecting watercourses. Work with landowners and agricultural agencies so that changes are practical and monitored.
Climate change and compound stress
Warming, altered precipitation, drought, wildfire, and shifts in seasonal timing can change food availability and the timing of breeding or migration. Climate stress may be the leading local pressure where a focal habitat is exposed to repeated drought, heat, fire, sea-level rise, or mismatched seasonal resources.
Do not assume climate change is automatically the top threat. Test exposure for the birds and habitat in question, then examine how climate interacts with habitat condition. A drought can be more damaging where wetlands have already been drained; a heat wave can be more consequential where shade and water are scarce. Actions include protecting climate refuges, restoring water regimes, increasing habitat connectivity, and reducing other stresses that limit adaptation.
Window, tower, and structure collisions
The U.S. State of the Birds 2022 assessment reports that hundreds of millions of birds die in window collisions each year in the United States and Canada. Communications towers and other structures add hazards, especially during migration and at night.
Collisions should rank high when local monitoring identifies repeated strikes, a building or tower lies on a migration route, or a concentration of glass borders attractive vegetation. The relevant intervention is targeted, not decorative: treat the exterior surface birds actually strike, prioritize the most hazardous façades, manage nighttime lighting where appropriate, and address towers or other structures identified by local evidence. Window markers are useful only when they are installed in an effective pattern on the collision surface; they should complement, not substitute for, habitat and policy work.
Free-ranging and feral cats
Partners in Flight identifies unrestrained free-ranging and feral cats as a major mortality source and cites a 2014 assessment that concluded cat predation was the largest human-caused mortality source in the United States and Canada. The scale and local importance vary with cat abundance, prey communities, habitat, and whether birds are concentrated around homes or colonies.

Use local wildlife or conservation data to determine whether cat predation is materially affecting the focal birds. Effective household measures include keeping pet cats indoors or in secure outdoor enclosures, especially during fledging and migration periods. Community programs should combine responsible pet ownership with humane management and protection of sensitive nesting sites; a cat intervention should be evaluated by bird and cat-welfare professionals rather than based on anecdotes alone.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Invasive species
Invasive predators, plants, and competitors can dominate on islands, in wetlands, and in isolated nesting colonies. They may destroy nests, alter vegetation structure, or change food webs. The strongest local case exists where an agency or monitoring program has documented the invasive species at affected sites and shown a plausible connection to bird losses.
Match the response to the invader: remove or contain it, restore native vegetation, prevent reinvasion, and monitor bird response. Eradication is not always feasible, so state the management objective and time frame clearly.
Hunting, harvest, and bycatch
Legal or illegal take and capture in fishing gear can be decisive for waterbirds, seabirds, shorebirds, and species using migration corridors. These pressures may be invisible in a backyard survey but apparent in banding, carcass, enforcement, or fisheries-observer data.
Where evidence supports this diagnosis, actions include seasonal or area closures, gear modification, enforcement, and compliance work with hunters and fishing operators. The appropriate intervention depends on the species, jurisdiction, and documented source of mortality.
What different regional patterns can mean
| Local pattern | Threats to investigate first | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Grassland species decline while fields are converted or simplified | Habitat conversion, agricultural intensification, pesticide-related food loss | Land-cover change, breeding surveys, insect or vegetation monitoring |
| Wetland birds decline after drainage, altered water levels, or drought | Wetland degradation, water management, climate stress | Hydrology records, wetland extent, seasonal bird counts |
| Forest birds decline where logging or fragmentation increases | Forest loss or degradation, edge effects, invasive species | Forest inventory, patch-connectivity measures, atlas trends |
| Migration-season carcasses cluster near glass or lit structures | Window, tower, and other collisions | Standardized collision logs, building audits, migration timing |
| Island or colony birds lose nests to introduced predators | Invasive species and concentrated predation | Nest-success studies, predator surveys, colony counts |
| Seabirds or shorebirds decline despite protected land | Bycatch, harvest, food-web change, conditions along the flyway | At-sea surveys, fisheries data, banding, beach counts |
Choosing actions that fit the diagnosis

- Is Your Dog a Picky Eater? We stick to simple formulas rich in natural flavors, that could tempt a fussy eater. No hassle with pills, powder, tablets or capsules.
- Protect what remains. Secure the sites and seasons birds currently use before undertaking restoration elsewhere.
- Remove or reduce the identified pressure. Change land management, reduce pesticide exposure, prevent collisions, control an invasive species, or modify harvest or fishing practices as appropriate.
- Restore ecological function. Recreate native vegetation, hydrology, nesting structure, or connectivity rather than adding superficial cover.
- Coordinate across jurisdictions. Migratory birds can be protected locally and still decline because conditions on the breeding, stopover, or wintering grounds remain poor.
- Monitor the response. Repeat the same counts or demographic measures, record the intervention, and define what improvement would look like.
Household actions matter most when they address a documented local pressure. Preventing strikes at a hazardous home window, keeping cats indoors, planting native structure, or reducing pesticide use can help individual birds. They cannot replace habitat protection, agency policy, agricultural change, or coordinated migration-route conservation when those are the dominant causes.
Common mistakes in regional threat diagnosis
- Using a continental number as a local ranking. A national decline establishes urgency but does not identify the cause in one watershed.
- Confusing visibility with importance. Dead birds below a building are easy to count; gradual habitat degradation may affect far more birds without obvious carcasses.
- Blaming one threat when pressures interact. Habitat loss, drought, pesticides, and predators can compound one another. Identify the pressure most amenable to immediate reduction while acknowledging the interaction.
- Ignoring life-cycle geography. A local population may be limited by conditions hundreds or thousands of kilometers away.
- Acting without a baseline. Record bird numbers, nest success, collision rates, or habitat area before intervention so that a later change is interpretable.
- Choosing an action that cannot be evaluated. “Help birds” is not a monitoring plan; specify a site, treatment, time period, and outcome.
A practical worksheet for your community
Fill in these fields using the latest local assessment:
- Geography: Bird Conservation Region, state or province, watershed, city, or protected area.
- Focal birds and habitat: species or habitat group, breeding or migration use, and season.
- Trend: direction, percentage or count when available, years covered, and survey method.
- Candidate pressures: habitat change, agriculture or pesticides, climate stress, collisions, cats, invasive species, harvest, bycatch, or pollution.
- Evidence score: what local measurement connects each pressure to the trend?
- Exposure score: how much habitat or how many birds encounter it?
- Action score: who can change it, by when, and with what authority?
- Confidence: high, medium, or low, with the reason.
- First intervention: one measurable action and the metric that will show whether it helped.
This worksheet produces a qualified answer such as: “In this watershed, declining wetland birds are most directly exposed to altered water levels and wetland loss; drought increases the pressure, but the highest-confidence action is restoring seasonal hydrology at the monitored marshes.” That is more useful than declaring one universal culprit.
What the evidence supports overall
Across global and North American syntheses, human-driven habitat conversion and degradation are the broadest recurring pressure. Yet the leading conservation challenge for a particular region must be established by local population trends, habitat exposure, and monitoring. The 2.9-billion-bird decline since 1970, the 34 percent grassland-bird decline, and the strong increase in some wetland-associated geese and swans after conservation investment demonstrate both the scale of losses and the possibility of recovery.
The most responsible answer to “What is hurting birds where I live?” therefore names a place, a habitat group, an evidence-backed pressure, and an action that can be measured. If local data are weak, say so and treat the ranking as provisional while improving monitoring.
