The right heated cat bed depends first on where it will sit and whether you want powered heat. For indoor use, a thermostatically controlled bed such as the K&H Thermo-Kitty Bed offers a small, removable heater. For a sheltered outdoor spot, choose a purpose-built heated pad or an insulated heated shelter and follow its placement instructions. If you want warmth without a cord, consider a self-warming bed or pad; these reflect a cat’s body heat rather than generating powered heat.

Product details below come from manufacturer specifications and product listings, not independent hands-on testing. Catster’s matching guide was updated September 15, 2026; prices, stock, sizes, colors, and retailer ratings can change.

How to choose a heated cat bed

Start with the location, then choose the type of warmth and shape that suits your cat. An indoor bed, an outdoor pad, and a heated shelter are not interchangeable: outdoor models have specific requirements for shelter, surface, and exposure to water.

  • Indoor room: A compact electric bed can provide a warm resting spot. Check the bed’s dimensions and whether your cat can comfortably get on and off it.
  • Sheltered outdoor location: Use an outdoor-rated heated pad on a hard, flat, stable surface, protected from direct rain and snow. A heated shelter adds insulated walls and a roof.
  • No cord desired: A self-warming bed or pad is a non-electric alternative. It does not produce powered heat.
  • Cat’s mobility and health: The cat should be able to leave the warm area freely. Ask a veterinarian about use for kittens, sick or recovering cats, or cats with limited mobility.

These options are examples rather than a verified ranking: the available product information does not establish comparative independent test results.

How warm do these beds get, and do they switch on when a cat lies down?

For the Thermo-Kitty Bed and Extreme Weather Heated Kitty Pad discussed here, K&H gives an occupied-surface figure of about 102°F. The indoor bed’s unoccupied surface is described as roughly 10–15°F above room temperature. These figures apply to the named K&H products and are not a general specification for heated cat beds.

K&H says its beds are not pressure-sensitive: its products emit heat whenever plugged in and use thermostats to regulate temperature. Do not assume another maker’s bed works the same way; check its product-specific instructions.

Can a heated cat bed stay plugged in?

K&H says its beds are designed for 24/7 operation and describes the products as using dual thermostats. That is manufacturer guidance, not an independent evaluation or a recommendation that applies to every heated pet product. Follow the instructions for the exact model, inspect cords and the bed regularly, and unplug it during an extended vacation; K&H relays MET’s advice to unplug appliances when away for an extended period.

Can you wash a heated cat bed?

Care depends on the model and which component you are cleaning. The Thermo-Kitty Bed has a removable cover and removable heater, but check its current instructions for washing details. For the Extreme Weather Heated Kitty Pad, K&H says the fleece cover is washable and the heated pad must not be machine-washed. Never infer that an electrical insert or pad is washable just because its cover can be removed.

Where should an outdoor heated bed go?

Place an outdoor heated pad on a hard, flat, stable surface in a sheltered, relatively dry location, away from direct rain or snow. Keep it clear of standing water and do not immerse it. For a shelter, follow its own placement and electrical instructions. Do not add straw to heated products: K&H warns that straw is combustible, and its outdoor-pad instructions say not to put anything over the pad except the supplied cover.

Safety checks before use

  • Choose a product specifically intended for the location; an indoor bed is not automatically suitable outdoors.
  • Set outdoor electrical products on a stable surface under shelter and away from standing water.
  • Keep the heated area open enough for the cat to move off it; do not confine an animal on a warm surface.
  • Consult a veterinarian before use for a young kitten, an ill or convalescing cat, an animal recovering from surgery, or one that cannot move away independently.
  • Follow the model’s exact instructions for covers, added bedding, cleaning, power, and extended absences.

Is a self-warming bed a good alternative?

Yes, if you want to avoid an electrical cord and do not require powered heat. The Hepper Nest, K&H self-warming pad, and Furhaven ThermaNAP appear among the non-electric options in Catster’s 2026 comparison. These products should not be described as heated electric beds: self-warming designs reflect a cat’s body heat rather than generating heat with a powered element. Check the current listing for fit, materials, and care instructions.

What should you check before buying?

  • Fit: Compare the bed’s listed dimensions with your cat’s size and preferred sleeping posture.
  • Location: Match indoor beds, sheltered outdoor pads, and enclosed shelters to their intended placements.
  • Power and removable parts: Check voltage, heater wattage where stated, whether the heater comes out, and what can be washed.
  • Freedom to move: Position the bed so the cat can leave the warm area whenever it wants.
  • Current listing: Verify today’s model, size, price, color, and availability; retailer details can change.
