There is no established rule that blue or black is best for every aquarium fish. Black is a reasonable starting point for a dark background, but research outcomes vary by species and by what is measured; if you change the background, choose a removable film and observe your fish afterward.

The title says “paint,” but most readers choosing a tank color are deciding on a background. Treat color as an adjustable environmental and visual choice—not a substitute for appropriate water quality, cover, lighting, stocking, or species-specific care.

Blue versus black aquarium backgrounds

Choice What the research suggests Practical consideration
Black Adult laboratory zebrafish and Coho salmon studies reported favorable responses to black or darker backgrounds in their tested conditions. A reasonable starting option, but those findings do not establish a universal preference or welfare benefit for home aquarium fish.
Blue A 2020 zebrafish study reported lower anxiety-like behavior in black or blue than in transparent or white tanks, and lower cortisol for blue than white. Blue may suit some species or goals; the study does not resolve a general black-versus-blue choice.
Neither as a universal rule Other findings differ: juvenile turbot had higher growth and feed intake under blue and white than under black, red, or brown in a review of research. Consider the species, life stage, intended outcome, and appearance rather than assuming one color is best for all fish.

Appearance and visibility are separate from the measured research outcomes. A background may change how a keeper sees the fish and tank, but the cited studies do not establish which color looks best in every home aquascape.

What studies say about background color

In a 2013 husbandry study, Pavlidis and colleagues reported that adult laboratory zebrafish exposed to bright green and white backgrounds had 3- to 8-fold greater mean trunk cortisol than fish exposed to black backgrounds or transparent aquaria. The authors concluded that the fish preferred transparent or black backgrounds in the tested setting. This is a result for adult laboratory zebrafish, not a general rule for ornamental fish. Barrett and colleagues tested 100 Coho salmon assigned to 10 tanks. The experiment found a preference for black over tested alternatives, including industry-standard blue, and reported less aggression in darker environments under those conditions. Salmon results should not be treated as a prediction for every aquarium species. Read the Coho salmon study.

A separate 2020 zebrafish study’s indexed summary reports that black or blue holding tanks decreased anxiety-like behavior compared with transparent or white tanks, and that blue compared with white reduced whole-body cortisol. This supports blue as a plausible choice in that experiment, but it does not show that blue is better than black for all fish. Read the 2020 zebrafish study record.

Results also differ among other species and outcomes. A review reports higher growth and feed intake for juvenile turbot under blue and white backgrounds than under black, red, or brown. A 2023 Nile tilapia experiment found multiple outcomes varied with background coloration and reported lower weight gain in the black-background group than in the uncovered control. By contrast, a six-week barramundi study found no specific liver or intestinal alterations relative to background color during the study. These findings reinforce that preference, aggression, cortisol, growth, and health measures are not interchangeable. Read the public-aquarium welfare review, the Nile tilapia study record, and the barramundi study record.

How should you choose a background?

Start with the needs of the fish species and the visual result you want. Research does not establish a single color that improves welfare for every aquarium. Background color should not replace appropriate water quality, cover, lighting, stocking, or other species-specific care.

  1. Choose a removable blue or black aquarium background film rather than treating color as a permanent tank modification.
  2. Install it on the outside of the aquarium, following the product’s instructions.
  3. View the tank under its usual conditions and check that you can see the fish and observe their behavior.
  4. Watch for changes after the background is changed. If the fish show concerning behavior, review the full setup and species-specific care rather than assuming color alone is the cause.

Can I paint the back of a fish tank?

The research dossier supports removable aquarium background film as the directly relevant, changeable option; it does not verify a particular paint or paint product as safe. Do not put paint inside an occupied aquarium or let an unverified coating contact aquarium water.

If you are considering an exterior coating, verify the exact product’s manufacturer documentation for its intended surface, application, curing, and water-contact limitations. A removable film avoids making an unverified paint claim and is easier to change if you want to try another color.

There is no established blue-or-black rule for every species. Black is a reasonable starting choice based on results in particular zebrafish and Coho salmon experiments, while other studies show outcomes can vary by species and measure.

Does a black background reduce fish stress?

Not universally. Some experiments reported favorable responses to black or darker backgrounds, while other species and studies produced different results. The findings do not establish black as a stand-alone welfare intervention.

Can a blue aquarium background be a good choice?

It can be. A 2020 zebrafish study’s indexed summary reported lower anxiety-like behavior in black or blue than in transparent or white tanks, and lower cortisol for blue than white. That result is specific to the study and does not establish blue as best for all fish.

Should I paint my aquarium background?

Consider removable background film first. The research does not verify a particular paint as aquarium-safe, and paint should not be put inside an occupied tank or allowed to contact aquarium water.

Bottom line

Black is a reasonable starting point for a dark aquarium background, but it is not a universal winner over blue. The evidence comes from specific species and controlled conditions; choose a removable background that suits your fish and visual goal, then observe the fish after the change.
