Florida also has snakes that look orange because of red-orange blotches, reddish crossbands, complete red rings, diffuse body color, or a small orange patch on the head. Color alone is unreliable, so compare the whole pattern, body shape, habitat and behavior. If the pattern could be a venomous species, do not approach or handle the snake; keep children and pets away and call a qualified wildlife professional.
Florida’s orange-looking snakes at a glance
“Orange snake” is a visual description, not an official taxonomic category. The Florida Museum of Natural History identification index lists 55 Florida snake results, while species accounts describe color qualitatively. The eight species below are a practical list of snakes that can appear orange or carry orange or reddish markings.

| Eastern ratsnake (yellow rat snake) (Pantherophis alleghaniensis) | Orangish body with four narrow brown longitudinal stripes in many peninsular adults | Urban areas across much of peninsular Florida; absent from the Panhandle | Nonvenomous |
| Florida green watersnake (Nerodia floridana) | Overall tan, greenish or orangish coloration, sometimes with dorsal speckling | Lakes, marshes, ponds, prairies, estuaries and slow canals throughout Florida except the Keys | Nonvenomous |
| Banded watersnake (Nerodia fasciata) | Reddish crossbands alternating with darker brown or black bands | Nearly all Florida freshwater habitats except the Keys | Nonvenomous |
| Florida scarletsnake (Cemophora coccinea coccinea) | Red blotches edged in black on a whitish-gray background | Throughout Florida except the Keys; secretive, mostly terrestrial habitat | Nonvenomous |
| Scarlet kingsnake (Lampropeltis elapsoides) | Alternating red, black and yellow complete rings; red and yellow rings do not touch | Throughout Florida | Nonvenomous |
| Short-tailed snake (Lampropeltis extenuata) | Yellow-to-reddish pigment and a yellow or orange crown on a gray or silver head | Geographically limited, mainly Florida’s central ridges | Nonvenomous |
| Eastern indigo snake (Drymarchon couperi) | Reddish, orange-brown or cream on the chin and sides of the head | Parts of Florida and southeastern Georgia | Nonvenomous and protected |
1. Red cornsnake: the most likely large orange snake
The red cornsnake is the species most likely to fit a report of a big orange snake in a yard. Adults are typically 30–48 inches (76–122 cm), according to the Florida Museum of Natural History. They are orangish-brown with orange, red or brownish blotches outlined in black. Background color varies from tan or gray to yellow-orange, so two snakes of the same species may look noticeably different.
Red cornsnakes occur throughout mainland Florida and in the Florida Keys. They use pinelands, hardwood hammocks, swamps, agricultural fields and suburban neighborhoods. UF/IFAS describes red rat or corn snakes as frequent in urban Florida. Their substantial length and blotched pattern distinguish them from the smaller scarlet species, while the absence of coral-snake-style red, yellow and black rings is an important safety clue.

2. Eastern ratsnake (yellow rat snake)
Adult eastern ratsnakes in much of peninsular Florida are often orangish with four narrow brown stripes running from head toward tail. “Often” matters: this is a regional pattern tendency, not a guarantee that every individual will be orange or show equally clear stripes. UF/IFAS reports that yellow rat snakes are frequently encountered in urban areas of peninsular Florida and are not found in the Panhandle.
A long, climbing-bodied snake with lengthwise stripes in a developed part of the peninsula fits this species better than a blotched cornsnake. Use the geographic clue only as supporting evidence; a photograph of the entire animal and its pattern is safer than trying to catch it for a closer look.
3. Florida green watersnake
The Florida green watersnake is a stout, nonvenomous water snake that can be tan, greenish or orangish. It usually has no distinctive bold markings, although some individuals show dorsal speckling. FWC records it throughout Florida except the Keys, in lakes, prairies, marshes, ponds, estuaries and slow-moving canals.
An apparently orange snake beside water, especially one with a heavy build and a fairly even body color, may be this species rather than a cornsnake. Watersnakes can look more strongly colored when wet or in bright sunlight, which is another reason not to identify one from a single color impression.

4. Banded watersnake
Banded watersnakes have dark brown or black crossbands alternating with lighter tan or reddish crossbands. The reddish bands can make the entire animal look orange at a glance, particularly when it is moving along a shoreline. FWC places this nonvenomous species in nearly all Florida freshwater habitats except the Keys.
Crossbands run across the back and sides, unlike the lengthwise stripes of a ratsnake or the isolated blotches of a cornsnake. Because the species spends time in water and wet margins, location is a strong supporting clue, but it should not replace a complete pattern check.
5. Florida scarletsnake
Florida scarletsnakes are smaller than the large orange snakes people commonly report. Adults are usually 14–20 inches (36–51 cm), according to the Florida Museum. Their red blotches are bordered by black and sit on a whitish-gray ground; the pale and red areas are separated by black. They occur throughout Florida except the Keys and are secretive.

The alternating pale, black and red areas can be confused with a coral snake from a quick glance. A scarletsnake’s blotched arrangement is not the same as the coral snake’s continuous rings around the body. Never pick up a small, brightly banded snake to test that distinction.

6. Scarlet kingsnake
Scarlet kingsnakes are usually 14–20 inches (36–51 cm) long. They have red, black and yellow rings that encircle the body. The red and yellow rings do not touch, a pattern detail that helps separate them from the eastern coral snake in many Florida field guides. The species is nonvenomous and occurs throughout the state.
Ring colors can be hard to read when a snake is coiled, partly hidden or viewed in poor light. Treat any red-and-yellow ringed snake as an observation-only animal. A clear, distant photograph showing several complete rings is more useful than a close approach.
7. Short-tailed snake
The short-tailed snake is a rare Florida species, not a common yard snake. It is generally gray to silver with dark blotches and yellow-to-reddish pigment. The head is dark and may carry a triangular or Y-shaped mark with a yellow or orange crown; some individuals instead show a white-fleck pattern.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service describes its range as geographically limited, primarily on Florida’s central ridges. Since 2000, it has been found in 11 of the 17 counties known to have historical records. A small gray snake with an orange crown in that upland region could fit this description, but confirmation should be left to a trained biologist because of the species’ rarity.

8. Eastern indigo snake
Eastern indigo snakes are not overall orange. They are large, almost entirely iridescent bluish-black snakes, with reddish, orange-brown or cream coloration on the chin and sides of the head. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service records them in portions of Florida and southeastern Georgia.
This protected species belongs on an orange-marked list because the head color can be conspicuous when the snake is raised or moving through vegetation. Do not capture, relocate or harm an indigo snake. Give it a wide berth and contact wildlife authorities if it is in a dangerous location.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to distinguish an orange snake safely
Start with the pattern geometry
- Blotches: black-edged red or orange patches point toward a red cornsnake or Florida scarletsnake.
- Longitudinal stripes: four narrow stripes on an orangish adult in peninsular Florida support an eastern ratsnake identification.
- Crossbands: alternating dark and reddish bands suggest a banded watersnake near freshwater.
- Complete rings: red, black and yellow rings indicate a scarlet kingsnake or a coral-snake look-alike; do not rely on a mnemonic alone.
- Mostly uniform color: an orangish, unmarked heavy snake near water can be a Florida green watersnake.
- Head-only color: an orange crown on a gray snake or warm color on a dark snake’s chin suggests a short-tailed or eastern indigo snake rather than an orange-bodied species.
Use size and build
A 30–48-inch, moderately slender snake is consistent with a red cornsnake. A 14–20-inch, thinner snake may be a Florida scarletsnake or scarlet kingsnake. Watersnakes tend to look heavy-bodied, while the eastern indigo is a notably large, robust snake with a dark body. These are supporting clues, not a substitute for pattern and range.

Yards, barns, fields and wooded neighborhoods favor cornsnakes or ratsnakes. Lakes, canals, marshes and pond edges favor the two watersnakes. Central-ridge uplands are the key geographic clue for a short-tailed snake. Habitat narrows the possibilities, but snakes can travel, so it cannot prove an identification by itself.

Are orange snakes in Florida venomous?
Orange color does not indicate venom. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission states: “Only six of Florida’s 50 snake species are venomous.” Those six are the eastern coral snake, southern copperhead, cottonmouth, eastern diamondback rattlesnake, timber rattlesnake and dusky pygmy rattlesnake.
None of the eight species in the list above is venomous. However, scarlet snakes and scarlet kingsnakes resemble the venomous eastern coral snake, and unusual color variation can disrupt simple color mnemonics. The Florida Museum advises against handling a snake to test an identification. A nonvenomous snake can still bite defensively, and a misidentified coral snake creates an avoidable medical risk.
What to do when you find one
- Stop and create distance. Keep several steps between people, pets and the snake. Do not corner it or block its escape route.
- Observe without touching. Note body shape, approximate length, pattern geometry, location and behavior. Use optical zoom rather than moving closer.
- Secure pets and children. Bring dogs and cats indoors or behind a barrier until the snake has moved away.
- Do not use a shovel, hook or hands. Handling is unnecessary for identification and can cause a defensive strike or injure a protected species.
- Arrange professional help when needed. If the snake is inside a building, trapped, injured or possibly venomous, contact a qualified wildlife removal professional or the appropriate Florida wildlife authority.
- Seek urgent medical care for a suspected bite. Move away from the snake, call emergency services and do not attempt to capture the animal for identification.
Why color-based lists have limits
Florida’s snakes show substantial individual and regional variation. Lighting, wet scales, age, seasonal condition and the angle of a coiled animal can all change how orange or red appears. The eight-species list is therefore a field-identification aid, not an official count of orange snakes. A complete view of pattern, body form, habitat and range gives a more reliable answer than color alone.
