In most bony fish, the operculum, or gill cover, protects the delicate gills. This bony flap covers the gill chamber while moving to help water flow across the gills during breathing.

What is a fish’s gill cover called?

The protective cover is the operculum. Most bony fish have one on each side of the head. It shields sensitive gill tissue without sealing it off from the water needed for breathing. The Western Australia Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development describes the gills as sensitive and protected in bony fish by a bony plate called an operculum (gill cover): Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

What does the operculum do?

The operculum provides physical protection and helps ventilate the gill chamber. Water enters through the mouth, flows over the gill filaments, and exits through the opening beneath the operculum. The filaments contain the gas-exchange surface that fish use to take oxygen from water. The operculum’s movement helps maintain this flow while covering the gills.

Do all fish have an operculum?

No. The operculum is characteristic of most bony fish, but sharks and rays generally have exposed gill openings rather than a cover over the gills. The preoperculum is a related, overlapping bony element described alongside the operculum in some fish; it is not the general name for the gill cover.
