This guide presents 16 representative species—not an official count of every listed animal. Statuses for land species come from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2020 regional list for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands; marine entries are also checked against NOAA Fisheries’ Puerto Rico list, accessed October 13, 2026. Because listings can change, treat the dates and qualifications below as essential context rather than a substitute for a current species profile.
How to read “endangered” and “threatened” in Puerto Rico
Under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, endangered means a species is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. Threatened means it is likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future. These are legal federal categories, not a ranking of which animal is closest to extinction.

The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) regional document used here covers both Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and was published in 2020. It records scientific names, listing categories, listing dates and Federal Register references, but it is not a guarantee that every current listing is included. NOAA Fisheries handles many marine species and sometimes applies a status to a distinct population segment (DPS), a defined population rather than the species worldwide.
The 16 animals below are an editorial selection spanning several kinds of wildlife. A species can be federally listed even when its status, range or recovery outlook differs elsewhere.

Amphibians listed in Puerto Rico
Puerto Rican rock frog (Eleutherodactylus cooki) — threatened
The Puerto Rican rock frog appears as threatened in the FWS regional list dated 2020. Its scientific name is included because common names can vary between field guides and databases. The federal category applies to the listing recorded for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands region; the document does not provide a current population estimate.
Golden coquí (Eleutherodactylus jasperi) — threatened
The golden coquí is another Puerto Rican amphibian recorded as threatened by FWS in 2020. “Coquí” is used for several Puerto Rican frogs, so the full scientific name matters when checking a permit, survey or conservation document. The listing is a legal status, not a count of how many individuals remain.
Coquí llanero (Eleutherodactylus juanariveroi) — endangered
FWS lists the coquí llanero as endangered. The regional list records its federal listing date as October 4, 2012. That date identifies the federal listing action; it is not a current abundance measurement or a prediction of when the species might disappear.
Puerto Rican crested toad (Peltophryne lemur) — threatened
The Puerto Rican crested toad is classified as threatened in the 2020 FWS regional document. It belongs to a different amphibian lineage from the coquís, illustrating that Puerto Rico’s listed wildlife is not limited to one familiar group of frogs. Consult the current FWS profile for any later rule changes or recovery updates.

Reptiles and sea turtles
Mona ground iguana (Cyclura cornuta stejnegeri) — threatened
FWS lists the Mona ground iguana as threatened. The three-part scientific name identifies a subspecies, so do not automatically transfer this listing to every population of the wider species. The 2020 regional list is the source for the category reported here.
Leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) — endangered
The leatherback is endangered in both the FWS regional list and NOAA Fisheries’ Puerto Rico page. FWS records a federal listing date of June 2, 1970. That is the date of the listing action, not a modern population census. Because this is a marine species, NOAA’s recovery-plan and critical-habitat information can be as important as the regional FWS entry when researching a specific project or location.
Hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) — endangered
Both federal sources classify the hawksbill sea turtle as endangered. In this guide, that status is presented at the level stated by the sources; it should not be interpreted as a claim that every hawksbill population has identical risk. NOAA’s species information is the appropriate place to check population scope, critical habitat and recovery documents.

FWS lists the loggerhead as threatened, while NOAA specifies the Northwest Atlantic Ocean distinct population segment. That qualification is significant: the federal status cited here concerns that defined population segment, not automatically every loggerhead around the world. Use the DPS wording when describing the status in a report, educational display or permit application.

Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) — threatened in specified Atlantic DPSs
The green sea turtle is listed as threatened, and NOAA identifies the North Atlantic and South Atlantic distinct population segments in its Puerto Rico material. A DPS listing is narrower than a blanket statement about the global species. Check the current NOAA entry for the exact population language before making a management decision.
Endangered birds of Puerto Rico
Puerto Rican parrot (Amazona vittata vittata) — endangered
The Puerto Rican parrot is endangered in the FWS regional list. FWS records its federal listing date as March 11, 1967. The date shows how long the species has been under federal protection; it does not describe its present population size. The subspecies name is part of the listed designation and should be retained in technical references.
Puerto Rican sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus venator) — endangered
FWS classifies the Puerto Rican sharp-shinned hawk as endangered. Its scientific name identifies the Puerto Rican subspecies, rather than all sharp-shinned hawks across North America. For current distribution, nesting information or recovery actions, use the latest FWS species profile rather than relying only on the 2020 regional table.
Yellow-shouldered blackbird (Agelaius xanthomus) — endangered
The yellow-shouldered blackbird appears as endangered in the FWS list. The federal designation covers the species as recorded for the Puerto Rico region. The list supplies the legal category and source references, but not a current estimate that can be used to calculate population growth or decline.

Puerto Rican broad-winged hawk (Buteo platypterus brunnescens) — endangered
FWS lists the Puerto Rican broad-winged hawk as endangered. The trinomial scientific name indicates a subspecies, so conservation information for other broad-winged hawk populations should not be substituted for the Puerto Rican listing. A current FWS profile is needed for updated range and recovery details.
Puerto Rican nightjar (Antrostomus noctitherus) — endangered
The Puerto Rican nightjar is endangered under the FWS regional listing. The document notes its former scientific name, Caprimulgus noctitherus. Older publications may therefore appear to describe a different bird even when they refer to the same taxon. When searching records, use both names and verify which nomenclature a document follows.
Puerto Rican plain pigeon (Patagioenas inornata wetmorei) — endangered
FWS lists the Puerto Rican plain pigeon as endangered and notes its former name, Columba inornata wetmorei. Including the former name is useful when comparing historical surveys, legislation or museum records. The status cited here comes from the 2020 regional list and should be checked against the current federal profile for changes.
Marine mammal
Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus) — endangered
The Antillean manatee is listed as endangered by FWS. The regional record includes multiple listing dates and states that the listing encompasses Caribbean and South American manatees. That wording is broader than a Puerto Rico-only population label, so reports should preserve the scope instead of presenting the entry as a status applying exclusively to animals found around the island.

Why these 16 are not a complete Puerto Rico list
NOAA’s Puerto Rico material also includes other marine animals, such as sperm whales, pillar coral, Nassau grouper, oceanic whitetip sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks, giant manta rays, queen conch and several coral species. Coral is an animal, but it is less recognizable to many readers than the species selected here. Leaving those entries out does not mean they lack federal protection; it reflects the guide’s representative 16-species scope.
The FWS regional document is also dated 2020. Federal listings, taxonomic names and population qualifications can change. A listicle number should therefore never be treated as an official total for Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands or a particular municipality.
A status trap: the Puerto Rican boa
The Puerto Rican boa demonstrates why a dated list must be checked before publication. The 2020 regional list calls the boa endangered, but FWS announced on July 12, 2022 that it was proposing to remove the snake from the federal list because then-available data indicated recovery. The announcement described a nocturnal, tree-living, nonvenomous snake found across varied Puerto Rican habitats, with caves providing prey and shelter.

A proposal is not a final delisting rule. The announcement alone cannot establish the boa’s current legal status. Anyone deciding whether to include it in a current endangered-species list should consult the latest FWS species profile and final Federal Register action.
How to verify a species before a project or report
- Start with the current agency profile. Use FWS for terrestrial species and NOAA Fisheries for marine species. Confirm the scientific name, listing category and any subspecies or DPS qualification.
- Check the date and legal action. A 2020 table or a 2022 proposal may not reflect a later final rule. Distinguish an original listing, a proposed change and a completed rule.
- Use location-specific screening for projects. FWS says its Information for Planning and Consultation (IPaC) tool can produce an official species list for a particular project location and impact review. That is more appropriate than copying a general article list into a permit application.
- Read recovery and habitat documents. NOAA describes recovery plans as road maps for species recovery. Critical-habitat information and recovery-plan availability vary by species, so the presence of one document does not imply that every listed animal has identical protections or materials.
- Preserve population wording. For loggerhead and green turtles, include the NOAA DPS language. Do not broaden a population-specific status into a claim about the entire species.
What the list shows about Puerto Rico’s wildlife
The 16 examples span amphibians, reptiles, birds and a mammal, with sea turtles connecting Puerto Rico’s conservation picture to offshore waters. Some entries are subspecies, some are whole species and some marine statuses are defined by population segment. Those differences explain why a single simple ranking of “most endangered” would be misleading.
The most reliable interpretation is practical: these animals have federal conservation status recorded by the responsible agency, but the exact legal scope depends on the species, date, geography and population wording. For a current decision, replace a static list with the latest FWS or NOAA profile and, when a project is involved, an IPaC location report.
