Which Scents Attract Mosquitoes? What the Evidence Really Shows

Mosquitoes do not follow a simple perfume blacklist. Carbon dioxide and human-sweat compounds such as lactic acid matter, but scent effects vary by species and context. Here is what the evidence supports—and how to choose proven protection.

Short answer: Mosquitoes use a combination of carbon dioxide, body heat and odor cues to locate hosts. Human-sweat compounds such as lactic acid can be important, especially for Aedes aegypti. However, current evidence does not support a dependable blacklist of perfumes, soaps, lotions or hair products that attracts every mosquito. Avoiding a floral or fruity fragrance is not reliable bite protection; an EPA-registered repellent, used exactly as labeled, is a better-supported choice.

What scents attract mosquitoes?

Mosquito host-seeking is a multimodal process. A mosquito does not follow one “mosquito-attracting perfume” signal in isolation. It combines carbon dioxide from exhaled breath with human odor and other environmental information to decide whether a nearby host is worth approaching.

NIH’s summary of mosquito research describes carbon-dioxide sensing and experiments on how Aedes aegypti distinguishes human odors from animal odors. A separate 2014 peer-reviewed study found that carbon dioxide enhances attraction to lactic acid and human scent. CDC surveillance guidance also lists carbon dioxide, human-scent lures and octenol among attractants used in mosquito traps. Those findings show that odor matters, but they do not show that an ordinary perfume worn by a person is a reliable attractant under everyday conditions.

Lactic acid is a documented human-sweat cue

A 2019 study of Aedes aegypti identified the IR8a sensory pathway as important for detecting acidic volatiles. When researchers disrupted IR8a, the mosquitoes lost attraction to lactic acid and showed reduced attraction to humans and human odor. The study also reported that carbon-dioxide detection is necessary but not sufficient for the mosquito to identify human odor.

This is a species-specific laboratory result. Lactic acid is a behaviorally active component of human sweat for Aedes aegypti; it is not proof that every mosquito species responds identically, nor that a consumer product containing a related fragrance will draw mosquitoes to you.

Do perfumes, soaps and lotions attract mosquitoes?

The evidence is not strong enough to make a universal claim about perfume categories. An older review discussed floral fragrances in personal-care products, but the available evidence does not justify telling everyone to avoid floral, fruity or sweet-smelling products as a proven prevention strategy.

A fragrance’s effect could vary with the mosquito species, the particular chemical, concentration, dose on skin or clothing, temperature, humidity and the presence of competing cues such as carbon dioxide. A scent that changes mosquito behavior in a controlled assay may have little predictable effect outdoors, where air movement and many odors dilute the signal.

That is why statements such as “floral perfume attracts mosquitoes” or “fruit-scented soap causes bites” are too broad. Some compounds may influence host-seeking in a particular experiment, while the finished personal-care product, the amount applied and the mosquito species in your yard may be entirely different. Scent alone cannot reliably predict whether you will be bitten.

Why the familiar smell-based rules are unreliable

  • Mosquitoes integrate several cues rather than responding to one fragrance note.
  • Laboratory findings for one species cannot automatically be generalized to all mosquitoes.
  • Concentration and context matter: a pure chemical, a diluted lotion and a scented shampoo do not present the same exposure.
  • Attraction in an assay is not the same as an increase in real-world bites.

What the geraniol study actually found

A 2024 laboratory study reported a 69–78% reduction in mosquito attraction when geraniol was tested against a lure containing carbon dioxide, L-(+)-lactic acid and ammonia. That percentage belongs to the study’s assay conditions. It does not demonstrate a 69–78% reduction in bites outdoors, and it does not establish that a consumer geraniol product works as a repellent.

Geraniol’s plant-like smell is not, by itself, evidence of protection. Unless a product has an EPA registration and a label that specifies mosquito-repellent use, you cannot assume that its scent, concentration or formulation reproduces the laboratory result.

Reliable protection starts with the label, not the fragrance

CDC recommends EPA-registered insect repellents and says to follow the product label. Look for the EPA registration number and an approved active ingredient. CDC’s listed options include:

Active ingredient What the evidence-based guidance says Important qualification
DEET CDC lists it among EPA-registered repellent active ingredients. Use the concentration and reapplication directions on the label.
Picaridin CDC lists it among EPA-registered repellent active ingredients. Follow the specific product label rather than judging protection by smell.
IR3535 CDC lists it among EPA-registered repellent active ingredients. Label directions determine application and duration.
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) CDC lists EPA-registered OLE repellents as an option. Do not confuse a registered, formulated product with pure essential oil.
Para-menthane-diol (PMD) CDC lists it among EPA-registered repellent active ingredients. Age restrictions apply; check the label.
2-undecanone CDC lists it among EPA-registered repellent active ingredients. Use only according to the registered product’s directions.

CDC states: “We do not know the effectiveness of non-EPA registered insect repellents, including some natural repellents.” That warning is especially relevant to products marketed only because they smell like plants or herbs. A natural aroma is not a substitute for registration, tested formulation and label instructions.

Pure oil of lemon eucalyptus is different from registered OLE repellent

CDC does not recommend pure oil of lemon eucalyptus essential oil as a mosquito repellent. It has not undergone the validated safety and efficacy testing used for registered repellents and is not EPA-registered. An EPA-registered product formulated with OLE is a different product category; use its label rather than treating the essential oil as an equivalent.

How to use repellent safely

  1. Check the package. Confirm that the product is EPA-registered and identify the active ingredient and concentration.
  2. Read the complete label. The label states where the product may be applied, how often it may be reapplied and any age limits.
  3. Apply only as directed. More product does not automatically provide more protection, and a pleasant smell does not indicate effectiveness.
  4. Protect children during application. Do not put repellent on a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts or irritated skin. Adults should apply repellent to their own hands before putting it on a child’s face.
  5. Observe age restrictions. CDC says products containing OLE or PMD should not be used on children younger than 3 years.
  6. Use extra physical barriers when appropriate. CDC recommends mosquito netting for strollers and baby carriers and permethrin-treated clothing or gear. Permethrin products intended for clothing or gear must not be applied directly to skin.

CDC says EPA-registered repellents are proven safe and effective when used as directed, including for pregnant and breastfeeding women. The label remains the controlling source for a particular formulation.

What about households with pets?

The odor studies summarized here focus mainly on mosquito host-seeking and, in the 2019 experiment, on Aedes aegypti. They do not establish that a scented shampoo, collar, spray or essential oil is safe or effective for a dog, cat or other animal. Human repellent guidance should not be transferred to a pet product without checking the animal product’s own label and obtaining veterinary advice when needed.

If people in a pet household need protection, choose an EPA-registered human repellent for the people who will use it, follow its directions and use physical barriers such as appropriate clothing. For an animal, rely on a product specifically labeled for that species and life stage rather than trying to create protection by adding a fragrance. The studies discussed here cannot validate a scented household product as an animal repellent.

How to judge a claim that a scent “repels” or “attracts” mosquitoes

Use this checklist before changing products or relying on an internet tip:

  • Which mosquito? A result for Aedes aegypti may not apply to another species.
  • Which chemical and dose? A purified compound at a measured concentration is not the same as a finished perfume or soap.
  • What was measured? Attraction in a laboratory device does not equal fewer bites in a yard, home or campsite.
  • Was carbon dioxide present? Host-seeking can change when carbon dioxide and other human-odor components are combined.
  • Is the product registered? An EPA registration and label provide a clearer safety-and-use standard than an appealing scent description.
  • Who will use it? Children, pregnant or breastfeeding people and animals may have different label requirements or need professional guidance.

Practical decisions for common situations

You enjoy scented personal-care products

There is no evidence here that you must stop using a floral, fruity or other scented product to prevent bites. If mosquitoes are active, add a proven layer of protection instead of trying to infer risk from the fragrance. Use an EPA-registered repellent as directed and cover exposed skin with clothing when practical.

You want a “natural” option

Check whether the exact product is EPA-registered and whether its active ingredient is one CDC lists, such as OLE or PMD. Do not treat pure essential oils or an unregistered botanical spray as equivalent to a registered repellent. CDC explicitly says the effectiveness of non-EPA-registered repellents is not known.

You saw a claim based on geraniol

Ask whether the claim refers to the 2024 assay using carbon dioxide, L-(+)-lactic acid and ammonia. If so, the 69–78% figure is a laboratory attraction result, not a measured reduction in bites and not proof for every geraniol-containing consumer product.

You are choosing protection for a young child

Follow the product’s age directions. Do not use OLE- or PMD-containing products on children under 3, keep repellent off hands, eyes, mouth, cuts and irritated skin, and have an adult apply it to their own hands before applying it to the child’s face. Netting for a stroller or baby carrier can provide a non-topical barrier when used as CDC describes.

The bottom line on mosquito-attracting scents

Mosquitoes respond to a blend of cues, including carbon dioxide and human odor. Lactic acid and other acidic sweat volatiles are scientifically relevant to Aedes aegypti, but that does not turn a particular perfume, soap or lotion into a universal mosquito magnet. Fragrance effects depend on species, compound, dose and context, and laboratory attraction results should not be presented as real-world bite forecasts. For dependable prevention, use an EPA-registered repellent, follow its label and add clothing or appropriate netting when needed.
