Whistle pet trackers are not shutting down next month—the service already ended after August 31, 2025. The former-Whistle replacement offer from Tractive also ended September 30, 2025. If you still have a Whistle device, it cannot be reactivated; you need a new supported tracker and, for dedicated GPS models, a new subscription.
What happened to Whistle pet trackers?
Whistle pet trackers did not shut down “next month.” The Whistle platform ended after August 31, 2025. Whistle devices and the app were no longer supported after that date, and the hardware was not designed to keep working independently or to be activated with a new subscription.

That means a former Whistle owner now needs a new, supported tracking system. The former-customer replacement promotion from Tractive also ended on September 30, 2025. As of the latest available support update, former Whistle customers cannot claim a free replacement or transfer their old Whistle service credit; they must purchase a new tracker and subscription if they join Tractive.

Why Whistle shut down
On July 28, 2025, Tractive announced that it had acquired Whistle from Mars Petcare. The transition plan was intended to move Whistle customers to Tractive and, depending on a customer’s subscription status, could include a replacement device, transferred remaining service time, or additional credit.

That transition was temporary. Whistle’s platform sunset after August 31, 2025, and the associated replacement offer closed one month later. Tractive remains a supported pet-tracking brand, but it is no longer offering the original free former-Whistle replacement deal.
What former Whistle owners should do now
- Do not buy a used Whistle tracker. The device will not become useful again by being paired with a new account, and Whistle hardware can no longer be newly activated with a subscription.
- Check your billing records. Whistle subscriptions were supposed to end with the platform sunset. Review your bank, credit-card, and Apple or Google account purchase histories anyway, and investigate any recurring charge that you do not recognize.
- Decide whether you need cellular GPS tracking. If you need remote location updates, escape alerts, or tracking when your pet is away from your phone, choose a dedicated cellular GPS pet tracker. If you only want a low-cost way to help locate a pet near nearby smartphones, an AirTag may be useful—but it is not an equivalent replacement.
- Check coverage before buying. Cellular trackers depend on compatible mobile networks. A tracker may be a poor choice for rural, mountainous, or otherwise weak-coverage areas, regardless of its advertised features.
- Match the hardware to your pet. Check the manufacturer’s size guidance, collar compatibility, weight, battery expectations, and whether the model is intended for dogs, cats, or both.
The closest replacement: Tractive
Tractive is the most obvious replacement brand for a former Whistle customer because it acquired Whistle and offers a similar device-and-subscription model. Tractive trackers use cellular connectivity through an embedded SIM; the subscription is what enables the tracker to transmit location data.
Current Tractive products include DOG 6, DOG 6 XL, and CAT 6 Mini. DOG 6 XL is aimed at larger dogs, while CAT 6 Mini is designed as a cat-focused, collar-integrated tracker. Tractive also offers health-related functions on supported models, including monitoring of resting heart rate and respiratory rate. Its newer dog features include scratch monitoring.

Tractive’s support information says DOG 6 and DOG 6 XL support bark monitoring, while other functions vary by model. A Tractive subscription can be moved to another Tractive tracker, but only one tracker can be connected to a subscription at a time. Features do not transfer to a replacement model if the new hardware does not support them.
If you are shopping for a GPS dog tracker, compare the current Tractive models with other dedicated cellular trackers rather than looking for discontinued Whistle inventory. A tracker bought through a retailer may arrive without an active subscription; you generally add the device in the Tractive app and choose a plan separately. Check the listing and current Tractive terms before purchasing, because stock, pricing, plan options, and promotions can change.
Who should choose Tractive?
- Former Whistle users who want the most straightforward move to a similar GPS-and-health-tracking service.
- Dog owners choosing between standard and larger-dog hardware.
- Cat owners who need a model made for a cat collar rather than adapting a dog-sized device.
- Owners who want health and behavior features in addition to location tracking, provided the selected model supports them.
Tractive’s health measurements can help you notice changes worth discussing with a veterinarian. They are monitoring features, not a diagnosis and not a substitute for professional veterinary care.
Fi: a credible alternative for many dog owners
Fi is not a replacement supplied by Tractive, but it is a relevant alternative for dog owners comparing current GPS collars. Fi Series 3+ is described as an AI-powered GPS collar with location tracking and behavior signals such as activity, rest, eating, drinking, licking, scratching, and barking. Fi also promotes escape-related alerts and longer stated battery life.
Fi’s support documentation says Series 3+ uses GPS and LTE-M location tracking with an active membership. Fi Ultra is intended for dogs in the United States and is not designed for truly off-grid use where cellular service is unavailable. Coverage and membership requirements should therefore be checked for your location before you buy.
Fi also has the Fi Mini, which is intended for smaller dogs and cats. Series 3+ is a dog-focused collar system, so do not assume that every Fi model fits every animal or collar setup. Fi does not accept former Whistle credits based on the information available here, and there is no reason to expect the expired Whistle transition offer to apply to it.
AirTag is cheaper, but it is not a GPS pet tracker
Apple AirTag can make sense as a low-cost secondary locating tool for an Apple user, but it should not be presented as a cellular GPS replacement for Whistle.
AirTag is a Bluetooth-based Find My item tracker. When it is near compatible Apple devices, those devices can help report the AirTag’s approximate location. It does not independently connect to cellular networks, provide dedicated GPS pet tracking, or offer the escape alerts and health features associated with Whistle-class trackers. Direct proximity finding depends on your iPhone being nearby—roughly within 200 feet under suitable conditions—not on the pet being anywhere with cellular coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteApple documents unwanted-tracking protections and says AirTag should not be used to track people or property that does not belong to you. It is also important to recognize the practical limitation: a lost pet may travel through an area with few participating Apple devices, so location updates can be delayed or unavailable.
If you knowingly choose AirTag for a secondary or proximity-based setup, an AirTag pet collar holder can attach the tag to a suitable collar. Use a secure, pet-appropriate holder and check that it does not interfere with the collar’s safety-release mechanism. The holder makes AirTag easier to carry; it does not turn AirTag into a GPS tracker.
Tractive vs. Fi vs. AirTag
| Option | Connectivity | Subscription or membership | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tractive DOG 6, DOG 6 XL, or CAT 6 Mini | Cellular connection through an embedded SIM | Required for location-data transmission | Former Whistle users, dogs, and supported cat setups | New hardware and service are required; features vary by model |
| Fi Series 3+ | GPS and LTE-M | Active membership required for GPS/LTE-M tracking | Dog owners wanting GPS, escape alerts, activity, and behavior signals | Coverage and model fit must be checked; not a universal cat solution |
| Fi Mini | Fi’s supported GPS/cellular system | Check current membership requirements | Smaller dogs and cats, subject to current sizing and availability | Not the same dog-collar setup as Series 3+ |
| Apple AirTag | Bluetooth and the Find My network | No dedicated pet-tracking cellular plan | Low-cost, short-range or secondary locating for Apple users | No GPS, cellular connection, dedicated escape alerts, or pet-health monitoring |
How to choose a replacement
Choose a dedicated cellular tracker if remote tracking matters
For a pet that may escape, roam, or become lost away from your phone, choose a tracker that can send location data over a cellular network. Confirm that the provider supports the countries and coverage areas where you use it. A cellular GPS tracker is the closest functional category to Whistle.
Compare the complete cost, not just the device
Dedicated trackers normally involve two costs: the hardware and an ongoing subscription or membership. A retailer purchase may include the device without service. Check the plan length, renewal terms, cancellation rules, and whether the subscription can be transferred between compatible devices.
Recommended Free Tools
Consider battery expectations realistically
Battery life varies with model, tracking frequency, network conditions, temperature, activity, and how often the device is being located. Longer stated battery life can be useful, but it should not replace a charging routine. Before buying, determine how often you are willing to charge the tracker and whether the model’s size and charging method suit your pet.
Check collar fit and pet size
A tracker that is too heavy, loose, or poorly secured is a bad fit even if its software is excellent. Confirm minimum and maximum collar dimensions, device weight, waterproofing information, and whether a cat-safe breakaway collar or a specific integrated collar is required.
Treat health features as trend information
Resting heart-rate, respiratory-rate, scratching, barking, and activity data may help identify changes in routine. They do not establish that a pet has a medical condition. If the data or your pet’s behavior concerns you, contact a veterinarian rather than relying on an app alert.
What not to do
- Do not wait for Whistle service to return; the platform has already shut down.
- Do not pay a seller for a supposedly transferable Whistle subscription or “reactivation.”
- Do not assume the former free Tractive offer is still available; it ended September 30, 2025.
- Do not buy AirTag expecting live, cellular GPS tracking.
- Do not assume a tracker’s health feature can diagnose illness.
- Do not buy based only on the lowest device price; include the recurring service cost and local cellular coverage.
Bottom line for former Whistle customers
Whistle trackers shut down after August 31, 2025, and the special Tractive replacement offer ended September 30, 2025. Old Whistle devices cannot be newly activated, so the practical solution is to buy a new supported tracker and service. Tractive is the closest brand-continuity option, Fi is a strong alternative mainly for dog owners, and AirTag is suitable only as a Bluetooth-based secondary locating tool—not as a replacement for cellular GPS tracking.
